Raw milk farmer fined $9K

"An Ontario farmer who was convicted on 15 charges relating to the sale of raw milk has been fined $9,000 and sentenced to one year of probation in a Newmarket court.

Michael Schmidt, who describes himself as an activist, said Friday he will appeal the decision.

In Ontario, it’s illegal to sell unpasteurized milk, but it is legal to drink it.

Schmidt had operated a cow-share, a co-operative farm where customers each owned a portion of a cow. He said he wasn’t selling milk – just the animal."

This story originates from my area of Ontario. and according to our news, Michael Schmidt is refusing to pay the fine. This is an active rural community with much protest and start up groups all over the region. If I understand the details, the gov't is making family owned cow share programs incorporate each cow. This has become nothing more than a contest of wills. I'd be very surprised if courts can successfully bully Canadians into giving up drinking "Pure" Milk.

Michael Schmidt recently ended a 37 day hunger strike. Every time they attack him, more people call to purchase cow shares. Here is a site which follows Michael's raw milk saga in Canada.
