Anybody have any DP resources to spare?Submitted by ATruepatriot on Wed, 12/07/2011 - 10:40
Update: Well folks, last night proved that this idea may have helped the DP substantially,Please consider this option with New Hampshire coming up.
Recently Mr Nystrom posted a request to log out if we are just reading and not actually posting. Apparently there is a problem once in awhile with resources being challenged as Ron Paul and the DP are getting more popular. This is a great thing.
I think this request would be hard for most to practice because most of us stay on top of things and most threads and replies we have already read. A lot of us, including myself, "stalk" the "Recent Comments" and "Active Topics" to keep updated on new unread comments as they are posted in real time while we participate.
The Recent Comments block is ever so important and is one of the features that make the DP so special and unique. As we know it can at times move along so fast it resembles a chat board. I find myself scrambling to keep up and get them all read before the comments slide out of the block.
Once they slide out of the block it is sometimes impossible to find them to read and catch up with the chain of conversation. Well when logged out and reading, both the Recent comments and Active topics do not refresh with every page change as they do when logged in.So most will not do this.
Having a slow landline connection I can watch every item load one at a time in the progress bar. Those that have fast connections may not notice all these items loading because it is a difference of a split second,But for me it can mean a difference of a minute or two when making a page change.
So I have notice that every extra little item and process,No mater how small, does slow down my page changes. Of course this means they are also using resources to be processed. Most use very little resources, but resources are still being used up while processing these items.
Now take these all these small items and multiply them by 8 or 9 hundred users or guests and they very well could add up to a sizable amount. But there may be something we can do personally as members. each one of us can give back unneeded spare resources to the DP.
Here's a few small things that may add up to a big difference as a whole. First, the "chat",As Mr Nystrom pointed out it is on another server and should not use many resources, But I have observed that the script that connects the DP to the chat server,No matter how small, does use a whole lot of resources to process.
One thing I noticed is that the chat does not just load once and stay there, It closes down and is reloading with every page change.Maybe this is something that can be looked at?. I was able to make my page changes 5 times faster by turning off the chat completely in my account settings.
I don't know for sure but we could possibly make a big difference by setting our priorities and turning off items or blocks that we really have no interest in keeping track of or that we can live without. For example if you are not interested in chat please go turn it off completely like I did.
As "Jon" pointed out several times, all we have to do is go to our Account>Edit>Block configuration and uncheck any features we really do not absolutely need on our page. Please go take a look at this list and consider if there are any blocks or features you can live without.
Also please consider Subscribing to the DP and making it advertisement free. Every page the ads do not have to reload onto during a page change are resources spared back to the DP. If we all consider these options and make a personal effort we could possibly help make the DP a faster and more stable site to enjoy for Members and Guests alike.
Thank you all for your consideration and Thank you Mr Nystrom for allowing me to post this!
P.S. I will be away, could a couple caring members please bump this once in awhile today? Thanks!
