how soon will we know results in Iowa?

I've never paid much attention to primaries before. Are caucuses like regular elections, with results coming in that night, or does it take a while?

Caucuses
The caucus itself may take an hour or two but the presidential preference poll is the first major order of business conducted. The media puts a lot of pressure on the parties to wrap up this part quick so they can run their stories. So you should know by 8 or 9 at the least. But its my first caucus so I'm kind of making an educated guess.
I Tried Wikipedia and found this:
Republican Party Process
For the Republicans, the Iowa caucus follows (and should not be confused with) the Iowa Straw Poll in August of the preceding year. Out of the five Iowa Straw Poll iterations, 1987 is the only year in which the winner of the Iowa Straw Poll has not gone on to win the Iowa caucus.
In the Republican caucuses, each voter casts his or her vote by secret ballot. Voters are presented blank sheets of paper with no candidate names on them. After listening to some campaigning for each candidate by caucus participants, they write their choices down and the Republican Party of Iowa tabulates the results at each precinct and transmits them to the media. [1] The non-binding results are tabulated and reported to the state party which releases the results to the media. Delegates from the precinct caucuses go on to the County Convention, which chooses delegates to the District Convention, which in turn selects delegates to the State Convention. Thus it is the Republican State Convention, not the precinct caucuses, which select the ultimate delegates to the Republican National Convention in Iowa.
This is only for IOWA.

My husband said...
that the Caucuses were a couple hour process for each voter. Kind of a pain in the butt. Unlike just going up there voting real quick and leaving. Does anyone know how they work? If they are a pain in the butt, it seems that would be in our favor. Because Paulites are willing to face hell and high water!

still wondering...does anyone know?
If it’s anything like in the past…..
…..official caucus results start coming in around 6:00-6:30 PM (Pacific Time).
I believe the caucuses start in the early evening CST. Some caucus locations have more business to address or have substantially higher numbers of voters. Also, given what the polling suggests some rural districts will likely not have Giuliani or Hunter “precinct captains”/presenters so these locations could be done in less than an hour. Other locations with high turnout could take a couple hours. These locations may not report results until 7:00 to 7:30 PST. Normally by 8:00 PST we know the results, of course if a few hundred votes separate positions official results may not be known until the next day.
Also, the media will likely give some general entrance poll results. We start hearing those around 4:30 to 5:00 PM PST. Also, if Ron gets a strong turnout some media will likely be dropping hints such as there is a “turnout surge that will shock the pollsters”, “strong Paul turnout”, etc.

Iowa caucus are by hand
The Iowa caucus are counted by hand at each caucus location. Of course who does the counting and all that is still an issue.
From my understanding...
The caucas starts about 7pm CST and should last 1-2 hrs. then results are phoned in.

Go to states, go to Iowa, there you can find out exactly how the caucus works. They are trying to train everyone. They even have a step by step video. Perhaps email links to Iowa campaign aides from that part of the site.
