Lessons learned from canvassing neighborhoods?

0 votes

Cold winters are tough.

Storm doors are often locked and it is harder to leave a slim jim.

Neoprene gloves are ideal for dexterity and blocking wind.

People are surprised to see someone canvassing when it is 10 degrees and everything is covered in snow and ice.

People rarely tell you that they don't want anything simply because they don't want to open the door and freeze.

Pretty much only socialists dislike Ron Paul.

Freedom is popular.

It takes a real long time to canvas neighborhoods where everyone has a few acres.

What have you learned?

Open Storm/Screen doors let the dogs out...

Which is NOT something you want to happen.

Also, MOST people are FINALLY becoming interested in the campaign (a bit late if you ask me, but...) whereas a few months back most did not seem interested, now they are normally appreciative of the info I have for them (especially the DVD's!)

Less chanting of just the candidate's name...and more women

The neocon blogs are posting videos of young men shouting "Ron Paul, Ron Paul, Ron Paul" too many times. In front of cameras, please consider saying Ron Paul for the Constitution or something other than just the candidate's name over and over again.

I agree with the enemy on that point. It makes for devastating anti-RP video.

Also: the neocon blogs are today highlighting the supposed 95% male to female ratio among the RP supporters canvassing in Iowa.

in nh

practically everyone is "undecided"

only heard a few people for mccain and romney

never met one huckabee supporter in nh

people are more prone to take slimjim when you offer free constitution

when people say they are not interested in ron and go to slam the door in my face, if i say that they can still have the constitution anyway, they are surprised and grateful. And then they actually ASK for slimjim and promise to take a look

holding a clipboard (even if not needed) makes me look more professional and approachable

don't tell them you're a NY yankee or NY Giants fan when in new england

Just say, "How 'bout them Pats!"

my lessons

hucky supporters are easy to convert

people are generally open-minded...only two were not.

old lesbians (two couples in my neighborhood) vote for edwards

out of thirty, 8 were for paul, 10 undecided, then a smattering of edwards and rombots and huckies and clintons. no obamas.

before the holidays is a good time to do it...eggnog, beer, and cookies!

yes, country neighbors live far apart and i got some miles in! i have a few more to go since they were gone during christmas.

THIS is a great canvassing DVD...

I think they are the ones offering it for 25 cents. Or you can download and burn your own.

I've only canvassed in Washington so far...

...and there's been zero media or other official activity in the Vancouver area so far, so most people still haven't even heard of Ron Paul yet. That's changing though; more and more have. It's probably nearing 50% now overall. In the nicer neighborhoods it seems most have heard of him.

What I've learned is that a "serious" smile and a friendly tone of voice go a long way. I've never had anyone be rude to me; the closest it got was twice when someone said no rather abruptly and closed the door without waiting for me to say anything more. Even they were not really so much rude as just not interested. Everyone else has been polite or even friendly. Many, many people are interested and still undecided. There's a definite need for more canvassers!!!

Use a bicycle

This may not be possible in the weather you are describing, but in Arizona I find that a bicycle is very efficient when the houses are on big lots.

People like to get dvds. I wish I had one I liked to give them. A dvd of just the Stossl interview and/or the Google interview would be great. I give them one I burn from one I bought on the net but I don't like it very much.

Immigration is a big issue so have an immigration slim jim available.

Don't draw your gun until they go for theirs. JK

Peace.

Great idea about the bike

Did you see that there was a 25 cent DVD available just a little while ago... I forget who did it, but it was great DVD!!!! I've seen a few at 50 cents.

Is there a fund that we can contribute for DVDs?

Do we know whether dropped off DVDs are viewed?
