Kent Sorensen responds to Bachmann's "sell out" charge: "Absurd"

As most people here have now heard, the chairman of Bachmann's campaign in Iowa has come out and endorsed Ron Paul.

Bachmann has now responded with this statement (see MSNBC link above for source):

Kent Sorenson personally told me he was offered a large sum of money to go to work for the Paul campaign," she said, accusing Paul of trying to stymie her campaign's momentum. "Kent said to me yesterday that 'everyone sells out in Iowa, why shouldn't I,' then he told me he would stay with our campaign. The Ron Paul campaign has to answer for its actions.

I see people now posting this all over Daily Paul as if it is automatically true, and as if Bachmann has no incentive to make it up.

What does Sorensen say? MSNBC reports:

In a follow-up interview, Sorenson categorically denied having received any offer of compensation by Paul's campaign.

Listen, that's absurd. Like I said before, people on this campaign supported me in my race. They worked tirelessly for me. They stuffed envelopes, they door knocked for me," he said. "I feel like I'm coming home to them.

What does Jesse Benton say? Politico reports:

Paul campaign chair Jesse Benton flatly denied that they were paying Sorenson.

"No, she doesn't have a clue," Benton told POLITICO.

Asked why Bachmann would make such an accusation, Benton shot back: "Because she just lost her campaign chairman and her campaign is floundering."

Let's also not forget that Bachmann has a history of making things up to save face when backed into a corner, like when she falsely claimed she was at a family reunion as an excuse for being late for an event in Iowa, or when she falsely claimed that an IAEA report says Iran is on the verge of having a nuclear weapon to support her hawkish views in debate with Dr. Paul (even the media admitted that her claims were BS and that Paul correctly debunked her.)

Sorenton has already explained his reasons for defecting at length, including commentary on how this was a very difficult decision for him, but one that he felt a moral obligation to make, regardless of what it would mean for his political career:

The decision I am making today is one of the most difficult I have made in my life. But given what's at stake for our country, I have decided I must take this action.

[...]

The truth is, it was an excruciatingly difficult decision for me to decide between supporting Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul at the beginning of this campaign. Dr. Paul and his supporters were a major help in my successful campaigns for Iowa House and Senate even when I couldn’t count on the support of the Republican establishment here in Iowa.

[...]

Since my election, I’ve learned that doing the right thing isn’t always easy. It’s easy to see why so many legislators 'sell out' once elected. The pressure to do so is immense.

But what America needs now is a President who will not just "go along to get along." Instead, we must send someone who puts doing what is right above all else to the White House. That candidate is Ron Paul.

[...]

With the entire Republican establishment intent on smearing Ron Paul and his dedicated supporters, I understand this decision could impact the way people see me and my entire political career. But this is the right decision, and one in which I proudly stand behind.

Thank for the well documented

Thank for the well documented info.

Bachman is not

mentally stable. That disqualifies her even more for president.

LOL

Yeah, somehow I'm not buying what "Dr. Bachmann" has to say on this. She was probably at a family reunion again and just got her facts mixed up or something.

Momentum

Thanks for the informative post! Ron Paul is definitely gaining momentum, and this will only help! I love finding some positive articles out there to go along with all the bashing the MSM is doing.

Stay active Ron Paul supporters! Less than a week until the first test!

great post

humanic, Excellent post with facts and links. Well done!

Thanks

It appears that the HTML got a little messed up somehow though, and now I'm unable to edit it, which is a bit frustrating. MODS: Can you help?

Being of a skeptical nature

I wonder about his switching horses in mid-stream. Something doesn't quite seem right. As he said, Dr. Paul and his supporters were a major help, yet he chose to campaign for Michelle? Huh? Ron Paul would've never endorsed him if he wasn't of the same thinking as Ron Paul, yet he chose Michelle? Again, huh?

She is a bunch of hot air, couldn't he see that right from the beginning?

I dunno, something doesn't feel right here. I believe he didn't get paid to jump ship, that would just be totally against RP's ethics, wouldn't it? At this late in the game, anway.

Perhaps he decided he would pretend to be a staunch supporter of Michelles, then jump ship at the last minute to stomp on the GOP a bit. And to draw supporters away from her to RP. He did it all on his own...

It just doesn't make sense to me. How could you support Michelle over RP when you know what RP stands for and even get endorsed by him? I'm shaking my head on this one.

OMG OMG OMG!!!

It's a big conspiracy! lol
Stop it!

Could just be that he's a politician...

and knows which way the wind is blowing.

I don't think he was paid to switch to Paul though.

Actually, it kind of seems like he was trying to imply that he "sold out" by going with Bachmann in the first place (for monetary reasons?) but has now chosen to do the right thing and support who he really wants:

Michele will soon be backing Obomnycare

so she can get taxpayer-funded migraine pills.

hmm what did he mean by rp supporters helping him win election

i always thought rp supporters were pretty limited in their activities outside campaigning for just paul himself, with slightly wider supports only on the prominent activists of this movement like peter schiff and rand paul

It looks like Ron Paul helped

It looks like Ron Paul helped Sorenson out in his state senate race I think in 2010. I remember that Ron Paul endorsed and fundraised for a couple of legislative candidates in Iowa. I believe that Iowa Ron Paul supporters helped him out in the campaign in 2010.

Here is a You Tube clip I found with Ron Paul at a Kent Sorenson campaign event.

No, we started the original

No, we started the original real tea party. In fact, Ron Paul even helped Bachmann get elected. It's also why a lot of people got elected in 2010 like Rand Paul's son with our help.

Only one tea party started on Dec 16th 2007 - the right date of the tea party. That's ours.

And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.

Lets get bachmans

endorsment! Also.. im kinda worried.. how is Ron Paul doing in NH, SC, FL...? All Im hearing IA IA... what about the other states?

Semper Fortis

Ron is in 2nd in NH

CNN has him tied with Gingrich for 2nd, but we know their polls are unreliable and that they're trying to manipulate things against Paul. PPP has him ahead of Gingrich in their most recent poll, which also has a much larger sample size. Romney leads both by a substantial margin.

I think 2nd in NH would be very strong if he gets 1st in Iowa.

Savvy Sorenson

State Senator Sorenson realizes something that Iowa Governor Branstad does not.

The Iowa branch of the movement Ron Paul has built will still be in Iowa long after the Caucuses. If it can hand Paul a caucus win, it can make or break no few number of Iowa politicos.

Paul ante portas.

When I first saw her fawning over him, I thought maybe W had a girlfriend on the side, but it was just Michelle acting like a teen-aged groupie.

I spat my beer out just now.

Thats the funniest thing I've read all day. Except for Gingrich's latest comments, that is.
