Santorum: "Imposing" our values on eachother is what "America's about"

"Don’t give me this idea — I hear this: ‘Oh, you’re a moralist. You’re trying to impose your values.’ Everybody’s trying to impose their values. That’s what America’s about."
-Rick Santorum, at a campaign event yesterday [source]

"Nobody has a right to impose their values on somebody else."
-Ron Paul [source]

"If we guarantee your liberty as an individual, that means you have civil rights to live your lifestyle. You actually can do things that I might disapprove of. But I'm very tolerent. As a libertarian, I say "Well, I might not endorse your lifestyle -- you might smoke some things and drink some things and eat some things and act certain ways that I totally abhor -- but as long as you don't hurt anyone else, I'm not gonna bother you."
-Ron Paul, 1988 [source]

The Secret to Santorum's Surge

Iowa Homeschoolers Listen Up

Figured it out. Rick #Santorum's limited surge in #Iowa is due to Home Schoolers supporting one of their own & Santorum's recent single ad.

#Iowa #Homeschoolers know this about Rick #Santorum - collected +$73,000 from Penn. school district while kids lived in Virginia. #reliesongovt

The scary part is

This guy has moved up in the polls.

RAND PAUL or NOT AT ALL

According to whom? Polls,

According to whom? Polls, smolls, it is all a racket.

Ron Paul or Bust

Santorum does not speak for me.

When he said "Everybody’s trying to impose their values," that's a pretty arrogant and presumptive statement.

What a fool.

And certainly no one I would want as my president.

This kind of arrogance gets a lot of American soldiers killed in wars.

It's unbelievable how wrong so many American are - even those runnig for the highest office.

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."

I dont get

how he calls himself a conservative. isnt conservatism abt giving this power back to the states and not trying to control the country's values from the presidents office? our founders never intended the president to decide what values people should adopt. I must be missing something with the allure of some of these "mainstream" republican candidates..

"conservative" has multiple definitions

establishment republicans are NOT constitutional conservatives. the traditional definiton of "conservative" has been replaced by a new and differerent definition, especially within the establishment of the republican party. this new definition is what we call "neoconservatism".
you will notice that dr. paul is the ONLY candidate who has proposed actually spending cuts. he is the ONLY candidate who has proposed actual reductions in the size of government. he is the ONLY candidate who makes decisions based on the constitution.
neoconservatives have more in common with liberals than with constitutional conservatives, while a constitutional conservative has more in common with libertarians, believing the less government, the better.
both neocons and liberals are very much pro-big government. the only major difference is that neocons tend to be war mongering chickenhawks and very pro-foreign intervention, while the liberals promote the social welfare adgenda more. santorum is as neocon as they come, but has little in common with a constitutional conservative.

nr

No no no. Conservatism is

No no no. Conservatism is about imposing social values upon society: not taking from your neighbor for your own benefit, Prolife, christian, penny pincher small government, saying "yes sir, no sir", ect, ect. These are conservative values that the conservatives seem to have a right to impose upon others. The liberal values are pretty much the inverse, and they try to impose these values upon the others. That is what every election cycle is about, imposing values by voting for the one who supports YOUR views. The majority vote wins the right to impose those things upon the minority voters.

What the founders intended, and what is done 250 years later, are two different things. Time changes all things.

Visions of Mushroom Clouds Dancing In My Head

Santorum would be just as dangerous as Bachmann as CINC... these two are dangerous, not Ron Paul. Whenever I hear these two candidates speak about foreign policy, I have visions of mushroom clouds dancing in my head.

It IS what America has been about, but it doesn't have to be

I read the article, and when Santorum stated, "Everybody’s trying to impose their values. That’s what America’s about." He was being realistic, and I used to agree with him. For decades and decades the U.S. government has been a battle ground for conflicting values. "Conservatives" have been battling against the imposition of "liberal" values and vice-versa. Most people think this is the only way things can be done. Someone has to win and someone has to lose.

However, what would happen if our federal government stopped trying to impose liberal OR conservative values?

What if it just committed to protecting our basic rights (don't physically harm me, don't take my property, bill of rights) and our borders (national security)? Then it left us alone to try to persuade one another to embrace those values which we hold dear?

This is a shift in my political thinking. I want the freedom to persuade and be persuaded without the threat of government force stepping in to try and decide the winner either way.

And for what it's worth, I am an evangelical Christian.

As a fellow Christian

Who lives under the grace of Christ, and was created by a God that gave me free will, the most compatible political philosophy for Christianity IS libertarianism.

Nowhere in the bible does Christ say to impose Christian values on anyone else through violence or the force of government.

Hopefully our numbers continue to grow. Bloody apostates took over there for a LONG time..........

MODS: html is messaged up again

Guys, what is going on here? This keeps happening over and over and over. I have not edited my post recently, yet all of the sudden the links are all screwed up, and it won't let me edit it to fix them.

The last two used to say [source] like the first one, and the word "source" (not the brackets) contained the hyperlinks. Now the YouTube links are floating there by themselves and it looks like junk. Can you please fix the post and if possible restore my editing ability just in case this happens again?

Hoping someone is working on this glitch...

Big thanks

for fixing this! I'll have to keep pointing it out when this happens and hopefully the bug will get resolved soon. Hope it's not pestering. Cheers Michael & Friends!

Predictably the MSM is trying

Thankfully, voters can impose

Thankfully, voters can impose their values on his candidacy, ending his little tragi-comedy.

As a Christian myself,

I believe Rick Santorum should be ashamed of himself for taking positions on issues that are antithetical to the teachings of the bible, which teachings he claims to derive his theology and morals and ethics from.

If he wasn't so biblically illiterate and driven by hatred for his fellow man, both here and abroad, he could be a pretty powerful ally for RP, but I will not hold my breath.

"For having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged, by better information or fuller consideration, to change opinions, even on important subjects, which I once thought right but found to be otherwise." - Benjamin Franklin

Agreed. Rick has been a hypocrite

He has been pandering to Catholics and Evangelicals on how pro-life he has been, forgetting how he screwed Pat Toomey during the primary years ago in PA. He proudly pushed notorious Rino Specter for pure politics and we voted his behind out of office. Both Newt and Santorum are embarassing. They should retire and spend more time reading scripture and listening to the actual words of John Paul II they constantly praise. John Paul II said NO! to the Iraq warmongering and they both ignored him. Benedict XVI also said NO! to Iraq. Ron Paul is the only Christian running who is the real conservative and actually believes in the just war doctrine.
Ron Paul 2012!

"Everybody’s trying to impose their values. That’s what America’s about."

THAT is the root cause to MOST of the problems America has right now. It's BECAUSE each side is trying to impose their values on the other why there is so much division and animosity.

Dr.Paul represents the cure; respect for Individual Liberty which is comprised of both economic and civil liberties.

What an arrogant

@ss - during the debates I just wanted to smack that smarmy grin off his face when Ron Paul was speaking the truth about Iran.

Time to INVESTIGATE the investigators of 9/11. PROSECUTE the prosecutors. EXPOSE the cover-up.

No, Mr. Santorum, America is

No, Mr. Santorum, America is not about imposing our values and beliefs on others. It is about freedom of choice and leading by example. Imposing ourselves on the middle east incites hatred towards America just as imposing our personal values and beliefs on our friends and neighbors does the same. Sorry Mr. Santorum, the views you express are those of a dictator.

priceless...

Santorum... the Doogie Howser of Politics...
