Urgent - Just Signed NDAA is Bringing Drones to My Hometown! I am furious. Read this news article from Syracuse NY!
Submitted by Ronny Appleseed on Thu, 01/05/2012 - 19:06I cannot believe that this is happening! We need to get Senator Chuck Schumer OUT!
Washington -- The Air National Guard’s 174th Fighter Wing is a step closer to gaining federal permission to fly unmanned Reaper drones out of its base at Hancock Field, according to U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer.
The National Defense Authorization Act signed into law last week by President Barack Obama allows for the establishment of six national test sites where drones could fly through civil air space.
Schumer, D-N.Y., said Tuesday he pushed for the establishment of six spots, instead of the planned four, to improve the chances that Hancock Field would be included. The 174th Fighter Wing has been trying for almost five years to convince the Federal Aviation Administration to allow flights of the MQ-9 Reaper drones out of Hancock Field.

Leave it to NY
The only place someone will pull out a weapon you can't even use in close quarters, in a crowded apartment building.
Even if it weren't a police state it would be excessive. Add Schumer to the vote out list *looks down* already have him here 3 times.
They'll be fitted with heat sensing cameras for night patrolling
so they'll be perfect for curfew control. :)

Hold the phones, please...
Alright, let me just say that I've lived in the Syracuse area my entire life, only moving to be closer to my wife's family in the last few months. I also care very much about the cause of liberty and what Ron Paul is trying to do. It is with this background that I want to try to encourage some careful thought on this. A few thoughts of my own...:
- The "Boys of Syracuse" of the 174th Fighter Wing had been flying F-16's out of Hancock airport from 1988 to 2010. I recognize that there are some important differences between MQ-9's and F-16's, but for the most part I don't think there's much an MQ-9 can do that an F-16 couldn't do. If you're concerned about aerial surveillance, what about the other thousands of planes that fly over your house each day? Ever seen the "bird's eye views" on Internet map sites (e.g. Bing Maps)
- Doesn't it make at least a little bit of sense that the MQ-9's our boys fly from a dark little room at least be co-located to some degree with the flight crew and support personnel? Maybe this isn't a great point, but it came to my mind.
- Where else should we test our aircraft? Only over deserts in the Southwest?
I want us to protect American civil liberties, and I want us to be strong on National Defense. It's a fine line to walk. I'm not saying there aren't legitimate concerns about our privacy here; I'm just saying that I don't think this is anything new.
Exactly. This article being
Exactly. This article being posted front page makes a mockery of the RP cause. This whole discussion is fueled by ignorance no better than the worst neo-con anti-muslim spittle-flinging rants.
Drones exist as a military asset. All assets must maintain a position of readiness or they are not considered to be assets. Maintaining a position of readiness requires proficiency training. For all aerial assets, proficiency training requires flight. Flight training must take place in sovereign airspace inside the ADIZ. Therefore, because drones exist as a military asset, they must be flown in sovereign airspace.
The fact is that if you have an issue with unmanned aerial vehicles, then you need to take up that cause. Being against UAVs training in the US but being for the technology is completely nonsensical. As the above poster said, there is nothing these UAVs can do that our manned aircraft can't; in fact they are actually less sophisticated than a lot of what's been in our skies for decades. Their "technology" is that they don't have to house an on-board pilot, and you can crash one without launching a CSAR team.
Do you really think that whether an aircraft has a person on board or not makes one iota of difference in how well they can "survey" the land they overfly? Are you really that naive? Really??? Please. Get this garbage off the front page for goodness' sake. It's making us all look bad.
I think
everyone gets the concept of UAVs but with all the events that are and going to take place and we read about this it makes people assume the worst, myself for example. With all the corruption people have been reading and watching lately and previous and current legislation that nobody wants or needs gets individuals riled up. The Cause of liberty does that. Your right, DR.Paul has always been the focus.

Serial spyovers are the problem
There's a huge difference in training in planes and normal map-taking and this.
The intent makes it so. We have a police state on the rise and it's evident with all that's going on.

Yea
It says they wont be armed with any ordinance but it doesnt say what they cant install. Or course there going to put cameras on there nobody or law says otherwise.
Getting to be ridiculous that we are being watched and we have to worry about this S**t and cant go about our lives without be F***ed with and harassed. Yea I am slightly upset.
"Freedom is Popular"
Oh I think a lot of people feel the very same way you do and
more will follow suit in time. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if they have trouble keeping them airborne. :)

On the news it said that the cameras will never be pointing down, only up. Uh huh, sure they will.
Drones
They've been using them for years. I just seen my first one fly over my property about two months ago. It was very low. Usually I think they fly over 50,000 ft. This one was only about 200 ft in the sky. I don't know if it was going in for a refuel or having problems. But it was flying very low. I live in Pennsylvania.
Most people will feel more secure with the drones and NDAA.
so why shouldn't newcomers know
what's going on?
I have a checkerboard sky, no way they would be training over my sky every day. These are not weekend warriors. I have low flying military jets? Why? These jets are low enough for me to see a pilot!
I am in no flight path, commercial or civilian.
Yesterday, I traveled 40 miles north and they now have a checkerboard sky. MAYBE they would have training missions but on a Thursday?
This has been going on for about a year--not before the last 12 yrs I've lived here.
This is scary stuff. And I remember a few short months ago I thought this was all conspiracy theory.
Besides, we need a new input.

"We need to get Senator Chuck Schumer OUT!"
I disagree because he'll be replaced by yet another Big Gov lackey.
We need to get the CFR (whom Schumer is a member) out of Congress.
This can only be done by exposing how they operate showing how the Council on Foreign Relations is the "club of the elites"
I think a lot of people are finally interesting in knowing how this whole game actually works.

For a couple of days and now I get on and find out that this is happening in Central New York? It's like a 40-50 minute drive from Syracuse to Utica, how long does it take a drone to fly there and back? Are they going to use Drones are potential terrorist in Central New York?

The government along with the soldiers and police officers are not fighting a "war on terror"... They're just terrorizing us. Period.
Why aren't the police officers and soldiers speaking out against this? What's their deal?
I thought police officers and soldiers were supposed to be tough men and have courage? Well why aren't courageous enough to speak out against this?

There is a deeply rooted conviction, the product of crafty propaganda, that "America is exceptional" and that it is "the bastion of freedom." Which is true as long as the Constitution is alive, the people believe in it and the people remain vigilant.
The result of this propaganda is that people, including public servants, cannot even fathom the idea that the government may have a criminal motif.

As important as this is...
This should not be at the front page of DP in the middle of primary season, in my opinion. We need to focus on Ron Paul's campaign and keep these articles in the forum section. Thousands of new, interested voters come here and a headline about Drones coming to your hometown fits the "kooky" meme to a tee.
C'mon guys, get with it. We need to streamline our message and get our messages straight and front and center and keep them there, in a clear and concise way. Let's not muddy the waters right now during such an important time for new prospective voters.
I disagree. I think the
I disagree. I think the thought of unmanned drones flying around spying on people and violating their privacy rights would not feel right to a lot of people and Ron Paul could use something like this to illustrate how we need to start putting laws in reverse.
Um, I agree and disagree...
I agree that we should be focusing on getting RP elected.
I disagree in that if there is one thing I want to know...other than campaign issues...it's that they are establishing bases here in the U.S. that will allow the launching of killer unmanned drones...only a few days/weeks after the president announced that it was okey dokey for him to detain or assassinate American citizens without a trial.
So...
I think this goes on the front page.
This is SCARY.
The average voter, which is
The average voter, which is who we NEED, will not think about it the way you do. They will think "so, the army needs to train its drone pilots somewhere, might as well be there, these DP kooks don't realize that everyone needs to train somewhere." And with that, they will close their browser. Agree or not, articles like this being the first thing a potential new voter sees is nothing short of HORRIBLE for our efforts.
Your warning sounds reasonable, but..
But my guess is that newcomers don't fit your depiction of the "average voter". You see, DP has the magic effect of turning the average voter into a freedom loving American with just one mouse click ;)
But seriously, I think your view on newcomers really is selling them short. I think that in visiting this site, they already demonstrate a sympathy for the views of Dr Paul, and btw, my guess is that the good doctor would emphatically disagree with you that the drone alarm is something that would reify the neo-con propaganda about "kooks". Me thinks he'd educate the newcomers if necessary, just like DP does with the other items.
Kind regs from Amsterdam, Holland,
Richard
This is exactly why we lose
This is exactly why we lose traction on foreign policy. Your fantasy about me selling newcomers short is romantic and all, but the reality is that we need a clear and polished message that is readily digestible. Drones on US soil is about as remarkable as F-16's patrolling central Texas, which happens ALL THE TIME. All combat troops must train constantly, they do not simply "exist" in a state of readiness. For all of neocon's loonacy, this is a fact that they understand. You can disagree with everything else, but when the brainwashed masses visit, articles like this turn them away instantly. People who come here aren't always looking for "answers," they are merely curious. Many - hopefully - saw the site on the SuperBrochure and decided "what the heck." Then they run into an article like this, read the headline, and say "meh, dumb." And click the X. It really shouldn't be so hard to stay on message, but its like pulling teeth around here.
So it's nothing to see here eh?
"For all of neocon's loonacy, this is a fact that they understand."
You actually subscribe to the neo-progressivist position with regard to drones on US soil. Fair enough. I can understand why you'd frame my comment as being a romantic "fantasy".
Needless to say that I don't agree with you that "we" lose. There's no "we" in this respect, just you and I differing in opinion.
Take care,
Richard
Subscribe to what, the fact
Subscribe to what, the fact that all standing forces MUST train? Yes, that is common sense to most of us. The argument ought to be a reduction in troops and/or a complete phasing out of drone technology. The difference is quite clear, but I can't tell whether your opinion on this is clouded by ignorance or ideology - or both. To be clear, I am a US Army pilot.
I was describing to you what skeptical readers will see. It is staring you in the face as plain as day, and it is exactly THESE kinds of stories being paraded front and center of Ron Paul's movement that will deflect countless could-be voters from his tent. When it comes to the level of interest or curiosity that a newcomer possesses, its safe say there is some kind of sliding scale. There is no doubt that those on the low end of the scale will quickly scoff when they see this as a front-page issue at Paul's top unaffiliated website. What should be common sense right now is sadly uncommon here among many at the DP, which is exactly why this movement exhibits such self-neutering tendencies.
I was describing to you what skeptical readers will see.
What you're describing is what you see and what you believe to be true for people like you. There are many people I believe also that will wonder why the need for flying patrols.
All you're giving is one man's opinion. Don't make the mistake in thinking you have you're finger on a whole nation's pulse.
