There was no NCAA Football Game on Tonight!
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/01/fact-checking-t...

Fact or Fiction Number 10 - If they weren’t debating, candidates would be at home watching an NCAA football (or basketball) championship
ABC News’ Greg Krieg’s Instant Fact Check: There is no college football championship game being played tonight. There is an NFL playoff game. But no college ball.

ABC News’ Chris Good reports:

America loves sports, and for a politicians, fanship is a good way to prove you’re just one of the guys or gals. Most of the time.

Asked by moderator George Stephanopoulos what they’d be doing on Saturday night if they weren’t debating, three candidates said they’d be at home watching a national-championship college sports game.

Unfortunately, no such game was being played. Rather, an NFL playoff game between the Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints was underway during the debate.

“Watching the national-championship college basketball game,” Newt Gingrich said in response to Stephanopoulos’s final debate question. “Football,” he adjusted, when corrected on the sport.

Santorum agreed: He’d be at home watching the national-championship NCAA football game.

“It’s football,” Mitt Romney said, also agreeing. “I love it.”

False: It’s neither. Badly as they may have wanted to, no candidate could have been watching a football or basketball championship game tonight.

Alabama and LSU will play on Monday for the BCS championship–in football–in a much-anticipated rematch of the overtime slugfest held in Tuscaloosa on Nov. 6, which LSU won 9-6.

Note to Gingrich, Santorum, and Romney: The game will be broadcast at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. Monday.

How about

We get a petition for Newt to go fight war against those evil Persians!!! Ewww they're so evil!! Every time I leave my house im afraid the blood drinking Persian devils are gonna suicide bomb me and drink my blood!!! Never mind I have a better chances of being killed from a cocoanut falling from a tree than being killed by a Al Ciaduh terrorist!

Tail end of the Vietnam draft!

I was one of those guys who got drafted at the tail end of the Vietnam area.

It was go to Vietnam, enlist, or go to prison.

There was one other option, but you had to have rich parents.

The Grinch is disgusting to the memory of the 58,000 guys who died there.

Newt had physical impairmants of

being short-sightedness and had flat feet (pes planus).

Newts physical impairments could have been fixed with eyeglasses and some foot inserts.

Notice that Newt doesn't even wear glasses now, and he seems to walk around very well....from one marriage to next and from another marriage to the next.

Drafted vs Enlisted

"People are commenting, saying Ron Paul lied about being drafted, since the Air Force didn't draft and how he must have volunteered being that he was an officer"

When Dr. Paul's number was called, he could have been drafted for 2 years.
OR he could have asked for a deferment, like so many others did, because he had a wife and children.
Or like Newt, he could have enrolled in more school and asked for an educational deferment.

When your number was called, you had to apply for a deferment, or be drafted, or escape to Canada.

They offered him another choice because he was a doctor: he could enlist (for a longer period than 2 years, but I'm not sure how long) and therefore get to be an officer, which meant no basic training, and a higher salary and benefits.
He chose to enlist.
He served active duty as a flight surgeon in South Korea, Iran, Etheopia and Turkey, but was never sent to Vietnam. He performed physicals on helicopter pilot candidates, when many helicopters were being shot down, an experience that he has said affected him deeply and contributed much to his world view about interventionist foreign policies.

You are right

When you were drafted you did not have a choice of what branch of service or what field, so you either served 2 years at the military's mercy or you enlisted in the Air Force, Navy or Marines, etc. and served for 4 years but you did have a choice of the branch and the field, but had to serve 4 years over drafted for 2.

My father served the same time and place as Dr Paul

Izmir Turkey in 1960-62..My father enlisted in the Air Force as he was offered a choice as well. He prefered Air Force over Army/Navy.

Government is supposed to protect our freedom, our property, our privacy, not invade it. Ron Paul 2007

Enlistment period for Air Force was 4 years.

When I enlisted in the Air Force in 1969 to avoid being drafted, the enlistment had to be for four years.

Time to ask Romney, Huntsman and Gingich to send

Time to ask Romney, Huntsman and Gingrich to ask their kids to spend 8 weeks in a typical neighborhood in Iraq and Afghanistan - maybe MTV could make it a reality show, like Jersey Shore ...

Have them there on their own, grunt lifes - the nice Romney boys and the Huntsman daughters ...

They could help treat soldiers in forward bases, and help in hospitals with the locals, and guard some Karzai/CIA poppy fields! Maybe the brave ones could defuse IEDs after a training on the spot ?

http://www.google.com/search?q=us+troops+poppy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIA_drug_trafficking

Send your kids candidates - not for fighting just some staying and guarding, aid work!

When Neocons & Facism go to sleep, they look under the bed for Ron Paul and "WE THE PEOPLE"!

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." M.Mead

Great Post. I have a request:

Can we stop using the words "troops" & "blood"? They're human beings, not "troops" Our men & women in the military ARE our greatest treasure. Troops sounds like marching men in WW1 or it reminds you of those green toy soldiers.
And we are individuals not "consumers".
Yes, since Iraq has been liberated the 1%'s kids should go over there!

I hope someone from MTV or VH1 reads this

and publicly pitches this idea (televised)I would watch such a TV series.. with relish! I would propose that the families at home would be shown with the daily anguished worry that must go along with having a child in harm's way.

Commenters on the hill saying Ron Paul is lying about draft

People are commenting, saying Ron Paul lied about being drafted, since the Air Force didn't draft and how he must have volunteered being that he was an officer(since he was a doctor and had a higher title). People are also saying that he probably didn't go to the basic training. It's like they're basically saying, his service didn't count because he was a doctor and wasn't on the ground fighting. As if seeing fellow soldiers blown up or having their lives in your hands is not traumatizing. Or as if saving the lives of the wounded is not as important as doing the actual fighting.

I am one of those who do not believe that a national debt is a national blessing, but rather a curse to a republic; inasmuch as it is calculated to raise around the administration a moneyed aristocracy dangerous to the liberties of the country.
Andrew J

As an Air Force surgeon, he would also be in harms way

It's clear that Dr. Paul isn't the brawniest guy, but he SERVED and risked his own life to do so. These other clowns have no problem sending other people and their children into combat or to their deaths. They also might have served honorably in some capacity without being in the infantry, but they didn't want to sacrifice anything, just the lives of others.

"It's clear that Dr. Paul isn't the brawniest guy,"

Are you aware that Dr. Paul played professional baseball with the Astros? That he is the ONLY congressman to ever hit a home run at the congressional baseball game? Or that he is an intellectual heavy weight without equal? Can you even imagine the intestinal fortitude required to state a true but unfavored position on national TV, be laughed at, ridiculed, and demeaned, never strike back, blow up, or totally lose it, while standing your ground and be proven right. Can you even fathom the strength it takes to maintain one's positions under the weight of peer pressure that that would implode the deepest underwater sub ever made by man? Could YOU even begin to take on, single handedly, some of the most powerful interest groups IN THE WORLD, including the unlimitedly funded Federal Reserve, and the MILITARY Industrial Complex, AND BE WINNING! He "may" not look "muscled up", but I can assure you, Dr. Paul is a real life "Superman" merely disguised as a harmless grandfather!

3 candidates would have been home watching NCAA college

football. Which wasn't even on last night. Willard had to be corrected - he first said college basketball.
Willard fell into the constitution trap question - no clue. Great education at Harvard. Did daddy buy your grades too?

Physicians in the military don't go through basic training.

Why would the government or anyone else want them to? These people are professionals.

This is for the Army, but also applies to the other military branches:

"Army doctors do not have to go through basic training. Instead, they attend a six-week Officer Basic Leadership Course, which teaches about military life and the role of a leader [source: U.S. Army]."
"The Army has additional qualifications that don't apply to civilian medical students. You need to be physically fit and must pass height and weight standards. You'll have to receive a security clearance [source: Darves]."

I saw an interview with RP on this

He said he was drafted by the army, then he enlisted into the air force to serve. Anyone who has a problem with that is just looking for an excuse to criticize RP.

Same thing happened to me in 1969.

I got a draft notice, so I enlisted in the Air Force.

The drill sergeants in basic training kept telling us we were volunteers. That never seemed very persuasive to me.

You

may be correct. As I recall, the draft was for the Army and one could enlist some place else.

What Newt didn't SAY is he could have joined a reserve unit, not sent to war or very unlikely to be sent, or a National Guard Unit. Today, we are accustomed to the Guard and Reserves fighting, but then they were mostly assured of NOT going--school or not.

There were other avenues for those against the war. As a conscientious objector, I think they could serve on the homeland in some sort of support effort (like the old WWII, bandage wrapping)

I see it over

and over...but i just can't understand how someone can stand up there and blatantly lie....not fib, or twist the truth a little....flat out lie. Disgusting

Anyone been watching post debate stuff?? They covering this at all?

Yeah.

Msm won't won't do the research and call him on it of course. Nutt G knows that.

amazing

and how long does it take to look that up? I just did it in about 30 seconds.

It should also be noted.

Rush Limbaugh also deferred. I believe it was because of a boil on his @ss.
grant

anyone else notice

newt always starts his sentence with "my opponent has a long history of lying" right before he lies to the audience?

in a few debates i noticed he used this line, more recently on bachmann.

Cain Lied to Ron Paul's Face.

It was the beginning of the end.
That's like slapping Jesus.
Newt'd

Tomorrow is Romney's Turn on the Draft Dodging!!

hahaha!!

Yes did you see his college photo protesting the protesters?

He had on the blazer. The college wanted to test all students to see who would be drafted.
Ugly...

Seriously

The keyboard warriors and lying thieving politicians love sending young men as cannon fodder to die but when its them or there family members..... no where to be found! Cowards
