Woman Accuses Romney Of Demanding She Give Up Baby

This is quite possibly a simple tabloid piece. This is not an issue to pursue for us. Just keeping "in tune" with the fodder that may be circling out there.

**The conservative evangelicals in South Carolina are sure to be leery of Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith, but after this, they may not be the only ones. The Real Romney, a new biography written by a pair of Boston Globe reporters, alleges that as a Mormon bishop in the 1980s, the GOP frontrunner demanded a single mom give up her baby for adoption or face excommunication from the church. “This is not playing around,” the woman said. “This is not like, ‘You don’t get to take Communion.’ This is like ‘You will not be saved. You will never see the face of God.”**

Wise feedback from the community. I changed the headline and put in a disclaimer at the top. No longer pursuing this issue.

Romney was a bishop in a mormon church?

I didn't even know that. I just thought he was a mormon. I didn't he think he actually lead the church.

Gotta Chime in on this one

As much as I dislike Romney, This one is most likely stretching the truth. If true, he would have been chastised and disciplined heavily - no longer would have been a bishop.
"excommunication" is always a decision of all the leaders of that area made during a meeting with the person that may have their membership terminated. Choosing to be single Mom would never even come close as consideration for membership termination.

Most likely this accuser was "counseled" to give her baby up for adoption because that is what the bishop (Mitt) felt would be better for the mother and the baby in the long run.
The mother took offense to the point that even now she is still after blood.

If more stories come out with similar incidents from people that can be verified as members of the church he presided over during that time, then I'm open for reconsideration and this would be great news to share with all other LDS members who are voting for him simple because he is a "Mormon". But for now, it seems more like a hit piece not worth standing behind.

“I’m fully diversified. I’ve got some under the mattress, some under the floor boards, some in the backyard.”

Excommunication Does Happen

My father and a close friend of mine were both excommunicated from the LDS church for different reasons. I won't go into details out of respect for their privacy, but Bishops do sometimes pull the trigger and kick you out for reasons that would seem mild to most Americans.

Still lacking the full truth in my opionion

Anytime someone is up for disciplinary action, it's a very emotional experience where pride can easily distort the entire experience. LDS bishops cannot terminate someone's membership by themselves, but are always the first to inform the member of the disciplinary action being considered. Many will take this information and bail without attending the mandatory meeting (of all the local leaders) that must take place (in hopes to restore the individual to good standing) before they can "officially" be removed from the Church's records. And it is easy for that person to say "The Bishop excommunicated me", but that is not entirely accurate.

Sure, there are incidents where power is abused, but it's not that common.
These cases are always one sided stories.
Anyways, my point being, this simply is not worth our time, but I had to chime in with my experience in case someone wanted to take it serious.

Let one of

Let the tabloid journos fight over this junk; we beat Mitt on kitchen table issues.

Let's leave it alone for now.

Let's leave it alone for now. If there's anything to it, you can bet newt will get his grubby paws on it.

Let's hit Mitt with every thing we've got on tarp, foreign wars health mandates, etc. The rest we leave to the neanderthals.

The issue

Romney was a Bishop in his church. I bet a lot of independent voters didn't even know that. Perhaps someone from the LDS faith can shed light on this. My understanding is that a Bishop is like a Catholic Priest who has jurisdiction for a finite congregational jurisdiction. I think it may be called a Ward. Romney is thus a sectarian religious leader. It would be like a Priest or Minister running for President.

No malice implied, just information the public may not know. Romney has offered an ecumenical stance. But a Bishop may have loyalty to specific faith doctrine that makes an ecumenical attitude challenging.

John Kennedy was a Catholic. He was not a Priest.

Again I am offering this opinion in the spirit of knowing. No religious disrespect intended.

Anyone who wants to bomb Iran killing children there...

Let us remember that Mitt Romney is a candidate of the Status Quo puppet of the banksters who donate millions upon millions to his campaign.

There is a reason why the criminal elte supports this neo-con who flip-flops according to how the wind blows.

Paul supporters should be

careful not argue against romney using this accusation....but I sure do hope it picks up some traction. Would be great for some of those moderates romney votes to see Mr Cosmopolitan in a less flattering, more fanatical light.

Agree with others

I wouldn't feed this. Feels like the kind of attack someone would use against Paul.

This needs to be investigated

We need to stay open minded and investigate this.

Stay away...

Paul supporters should stay away from stories like this...Let the pundits have it if they want, this is a religious, personal, faith based story.

Preparation through education is less costly than learning through tragedy

Wait and See

This could be Romney's Newsletter: a misreported, misunderstood, or outright false claim. With just one witness - the accuser - how can it stand scrutiny?
We've got a lot of positive things to do to get President Paul into office. I think it's safer to focus on those.

I wouldn't want to spread

I wouldn't want to spread this since it's coming from some real wing nuts.

It is UNBELIEVABLE to me...

It is UNBELIEVABLE to me why ANY Bible believing Christian could possibly vote for Romney, or for that matter any candidate other than Ron Paul.

Very much agreed.

I grew up going to a Lutheran church, and though I no longer consider myself a religious person, I still hold spiritual beliefs. It is such a disappointment to see people who believe in a benevolent God cheerleading for unjust war and other acts of ill will. Hopefully they will come around soon and join the good fight... the fight for liberty!

STOP

This doesnt sound legit or reasonable and we are only getting one side of the story. These types of stories almost always end up being over exagerated.

I think it would be irresponsible to go spreading this around without knowing all the facts.

you stop.. this is how you get to the facts...

hmmm?

You get facts by spreading rumors that we don't know are true? Guess thats not how I usually do it. I usually try and make sure I know what I'm saying is accurate and honest before I go spreading it around. Isn't that the battle all of us are fighting against during the on going smear campaign against RP?

this is an article. not a

this is an article. not a rumor. It comes down to did he or didn't he.. I don't think there is anything wrong with discovering the facts.

Best not to make too much of this...

This is a hit piece, the kind we're used to seeing used on Ron Paul. As a Mormon, I can tell you that there's almost no way this is how it would shake out. As a Bishop, Romney would not have had the authority to excommunicate anyone, and Romney would have gotten in big trouble for this kind of behavior. McKay Coppins, who wrote this piece, is also a Mormon and should know better how the system works. But he's in the tank for Obama, and always has been. (He used to write in our local paper). This is just McKay Coppins venting because he's upset that the most successful Mormon politically is someone like Romney and not Harry Reid.

Blowback?

Do you think it would be better if I deleted this then? You're saying maybe we might get blowback?

No, I wouldn't presume to tell you what to do

You can do whatever you want, far be it from me to say whether or not this is a big deal. I'm sure it would be important to a lot of people even if it were only partially true. My only point is that I personally don't give it much credence based on what I know about LDS (Mormon) church policy and the writer, McKay Coppins, who has almost always been a water carrier for President Obama.
