CNN waives rules, lets Rick Perry debate

CNN now says that Rick Perry is being invited to their debate in South Carolina on January 19, two days before the big primary in which he hopes to make his last stand. This despite the fact that he has not met any of the requirements for participation that CNN made public last week.

“Yes, Gov. Perry will be invited to next week’s CNN debate,” said Edie Emery, director of public relations for Turner Broadcasting Systems, in an e-mail to TPM. “He has met the criteria.”

I know one thing. If I did

I know one thing. If I did not have a zillion other reasons to want RP for President (which I do) just having him BE one and refuse to go on any of these channels except maybe Cspan and Public service TV, would be enough.

Since when did rules apply to Perry

Thought they only applied to poor people ;)

It is an enormous simplification to speak of the American mind. Every American has his own mind.

Let's Protest

I'm going to write to CNN and complain. You all should, too.

good idea

Gary Johnson supporters should do the same - write and complain.

And of course, if it was

And of course, if it was Paul, the line would be, "rules are rules, sorry"

This is true.

This is true.

All about the Benjis.

what I don't understand

is why rules for debate admittance for public servant positions are being set by TV networks? Why aren't there some sort of official guidelines voted on by the American people and adhered to for all debates?

Even the parties themselves

Even the parties themselves are private and so can set their own rules. It is practically criminal, in my opinion, because they are quasi government in that they get gov't preference and regulations which favor them yet they are mostly beyond the reach of public control. After Perot threatened the two party system and had a great response in the debates, the two major parties changed the whole debate system to exclude third parties entirely and make it even more difficult for them. The league of women voters, who until that time had run things, resigned in protest as I understand it. Ever since then, the two parties have had their way with the networks. Of course, none of this would be a problem if they were stripped of preferential treatment and regulations and there were more transparency. Not to mention that broadcasting should be opened up and the FCC sent to the dustbin.

Because these are private

Because these are private debates run by private companies? They can invite who they want (although their hypocrisy in this case is ridiculous)

We have election rules

You must be US citizen, over 35, etc. shouldn't debate format, rules be established as well?

Very good question

.

Remember folks, the rules are

Remember folks, the rules are only for us, not for them.

Ron Paul or Bust

sucks, pure hypocrisy

but, if the world were fair, Gary Johnson would've been in all the debates leading up to Iowa Caucus, and Grinch-Frothy, Huntsman & Perry would've been booted out long ago!

& MSM bastards had the nerve to shut out Dr. Paul in 2008!

now they're groveling.o) okay, sorta, kinda, because they at least know that purely monetarily, anytime the Doc is featured or mentioned, their ratings go through the roof.

hey, don't you guys think we kept basic Cable/satelliteTV in business for the last 5yrs of bad economy?

lol okay let's not get ahead of ourselves.

"Let it not be said that no one cared, that no one objected once it's realized that our liberties and wealth are in jeopardy." - Dr. Ronald Ernest Paul

Apparantly

The "rules" only apply to those who question the statist status quo.

If you are a corporatist, anything goes!

Who cares

He's just gonna lower his ratings even more anyway. It always happens after he opens his mouth. And, no I m not saying that to diss him or something like that - as a matter of fact of all the others I dislike him the least. But that's just the fact - he's no debate material.

Buddy Roemer must be pissed! He did better than Rick Perry

Buddy Roemer must be pissed! He did better than Rick Perry didn't he? Ahh, but he's a progressive Republican. Can't have one of those echoing Ron Paul on the militarism and invasions of privacy. Remember when they let Gary Johnson do that? They had to get rid of him...

"Cowards & idiots can come along for the ride but they gotta sit in the back seat!"

comic relief

They need a clown.

Seriously they should give

Seriously they should give him his own reality tv show after all this.

It's just pathetic.

I remember when they didn't want to let Ron in the debate because he had less than 15%.

This double standard just sucks.

Rick Perry knows that rules

Rick Perry knows that rules are only for suckers and poor people.

Rules are

designed by one group to interpret & avoid while they impose them on the rest to dominate & enforce. Sad truth isn't it?

"It's The Corruption Stupid!"

"It's The Corruption Stupid!"

Ron Paul is the only anti-corruption candidate in the race.
Obama has stolen hundreds of billions and given it to his pals at General Electric, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Solyndra and on and on.
We'll never find all of the 'bodies'.
Romney will do the same.
This election cycle is a test of the American people.
If they elect Barakmitt Obamney they will prove undeserving of the only true Republic in history.

Ben Franklin said, "It's a Republic...if you can keep it." The question he was responding to was, “Well, Doctor, what have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?”.

America is one election away from being a certified Monarchy.
