There is a very simple, and we think overlooked, reason why the abominations of SOPA and PIPA have appeared like cancerous growths in the House and Senate, and it has more to do than just censoring the internet. It goes deeper than that. It hits a nerve. The very idea of a bottom-up, people driven internet clashes violently with the ideological and political worldview that surveillance should only exist in one direction: From the top down.
You see, we've overlooked what it really means in terms of discomfort and career risk to those who normally bask and benefit from the art of statecraft.
You see, the ordinary, unwashed masses - that would be you and me - are in possession of one of the most powerful forces the earth has ever seen.
And you have learned to use it in a way that is indeed alarming.
Ordinary people, with little or no political knowledge or even education, are using it to keep their elected employees under surveillance 24 hours a day, seven days a week - like real hiring managers should.
You see, you're all figuring out that your computer desk at home is now headquarters - it's now the head office - and you're acting like the boss, and these employees don't like it one bit.
You're calling them out for having a business on the side. For taking long lunches with your competitors. For using the company car and copy machine for their personal use without telling you. For improper conduct that would violate any employee ethics manual. For noticing that they exempt themselves from it, but not you, the boss.
In other words, you are finally (as the founders intended, and would be ecstatic to see) holding your elected Federal and State employees accountable beyond their wildest imaginations.
You're watching "the help" like any good supervisor, manager or owner would and THEY DON'T LIKE IT.
Why? You're tirelessly performing hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual performance reviews. You are writing them letters of praise or reprimand. You are sending them the equivalent of performance improvement plans ("improve or remove" coaching letters). You are expressing your anger or disappointment for lying to you during presentations (i.e., debates on the floor of the House or Senate, during interviews with the press, or during campaign speeches) since you're able to compare a report they delivered a year ago, or a month ago to one they gave today. And you can even post a clip of them lying that they cannot deny or hide from. You're catching them lying on or padding their expense reports or catching them investing or accepting rewards or favors where it's a conflict of interest to you personally as the real CEO of this country.
You have harnessed a resource at your fingertips - Google alone processes 24 petabytes of data alone per day - that you can use to micromanage them, in a way that they prefer to use instead to micro-manage you.
In other words, you are doing things that they prefer TO DO TO YOU INSTEAD, AND TO YOU ONLY, AND NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.
SOPA and PIPA have been introduced (along with other abominable legislation of late) to keep you and the Constitution of the United States from activating at a level that they will never be able to suppress unless they act now. A tipping point in what they believe is the wrong direction is at hand. A tipping point that could restore the Republic to its original Constitutional form and end a 100 year reign of the kleptocracy.
You and your use of the internet have inadvertently leveraged an 18th-century Constitution, a Bill of Rights, the Privileges and Immunities clause, and powers reserved to the States or the people themselves, and raised them all to an unprecedented, almost astronomical power.
You have accidentally taken all the rights and powers in these old parchment documents to a level several orders of magnitude above the most basic objections against the divine rights of kings and despots that were so eloquently expressed, even in the Declaration of Independence, to a dizzying height never thought possible by the Founders.
You have arranged yourselves in direct competition to them, into virtual Senates, virtual Houses of Representatives, virtual Judiciaries, and virtual Inspectors General, all in a manner that redefines what consent of the governed will mean from now on. You can all now deliberate every decision, every move, every dollar, every law, beyond the mere vehicle of freedom of assembly and freedom of speech.
You have arranged yourselves into a neural net, or brain of the actual Republic, as originally intended, but never foreseen.
And it is from that height, that the internet has allowed the US Constitution and you as the owner to, almost without being fully aware of it, decimate the worldview - the philosophy of empire - that to this day would prefer that the nuisance of the cult of liberty vanish from the face of the earth along with its insufferable US Constitution once and for all.
You have it on the run.
And there you have the real reason for SOPA, PIPA, and the NDAA provisions and other laws that the House and the Senate have had the temerity to introduce while simultaneously flouting these words written by giants that will forever tower over them and cast long shadows over their dealings...

Don't get me wrong, I really feel that good constructive criticism is healthy and good, but I really think that a lot of these guys on here who are always highly critical of Ron Paul's performances in these debates need to get off their duffs and hit the pavement or run for some office in order to spread the message, instead of contributing by their highly critical play by play analysis from the couch. I really think it would sober them up in a hurry, and restore a lot of the respect and admiration for a guy who did his very best last night. And by the way it was amazing!! I actually handed out super brochures all day yesterday in the cold and I talking to tons of students on the side walk(by the way most of them sincerely thanked me for doing what I was doing)at BYU-Idaho. I did this for about six hours until one friendly officer and a university security officer can and protected and served me by scaring my two dogs half to death, telling me to put my hands where he could see them, then telling me to put my bag of brochures on the wet ground(he yelled put your bag on the ground), and then put my hands on the hood of his car as he frisked me for guns and knives, and then I was treated to a Nazi style game of inquisition!! Then They threatened me if they had ever one complaint, or if I stepped foot on there private side walk again that they've have me run out of town or thrown in jail. Mind you, I'm Mormon and I served a two year mission in Finland for this church!!! The reason that I was there talking to students was because one of my friends that goes to school there was threatened with being kicked out of school if he continued in his political activism after that university cancelled all political clubs. Mind you that the school newspaper the day I got thrown on the hood of the car for nothing had a section about the candidates and the GOP race!!! What really makes me mad is that on our churches official web site it says"the lord has stressed that we aught to be concerned and involved in promoting good government." I guess just not on there property ironically enough!! But after my experience the other day and many other ones like this, I always look at the cup half full when I see anyone giving it there best to fight for the "message of liberty" and I think more of these armchair quarterbacks on this site would too if they got out into the real fray from time to time!!!

dont get me wrong, i go out with 200 copies of 'For Liberty' at a time and spread 'em around like the flu with my ron paul banner posted up... but the internet is THE most useful tool for informing people that exists, period.

I've bumped into this comment four times. It's like a cat under your feet. Though I appreciate what the dude is saying it is annoying as hell.
Hardly "bottom up" but agreement nevertheless.
Since the SOPA and PIPA are both sponsored and created at the behest of "corporate media organizations" it does not fit the "Alinsky" bellwether of "bottom up" in it's "source" for action.
And in truth the overwhelming outcry against these draconian unconstitutional legislastions is very much a "bottom up" response to those legislations.
Nevertheless, I'm in full agreement with the "heart " of your blogs intent, to stand against these profoundly ill-conceived laws.
I've also reached a somewhat obvious conclusion, that the Obama administration, like the four preceding administrations, examples no moral issue with doing a "top down" regardless of what "we the people" want or say. Examples of such unconstitutional "top down" maneuvers without public support are the " patriot act(s)" and the " affordable health care act" .
Even to a political innocent, the culpability of both the media and our Federal governments involvments in "picking the king" and "unconstitutionality" are becoming glaringly apparent. Yet despite the groundswell of public outcry, no change in behaviors has shone forth.
Such are the attempts by DC and another corporate elitist group seeking to denude our individual freedoms and constitutional rights by censoring without legal remedy our usage of the Internet . Thereby taking another viscous swipe at our free speach.
Elitist corporations, make a bad name to a free market. Their purchase of our elected officials undermine not only that free market but are seemingly purposes with intent to enslave us. Yes, enslavement, by causing trillions of our hard earned wages turned to usury taxation by men who serve not we, but they the corporate oligarchy. Yet it is WE the slave upon whom they the Oligarchy feed, we bail them out, we allow them to use our money to put us in jail for not breaking any constitutional law. We pay them to detain us indefinitely and to strip away our citizenship based upon hearsay, and not rule of constitutional law. We are both the cause and the effected, for we have small remedy.
That's why Ron Paul MUST win in the hearts and minds of Americans, for it is his message of the constitutional rule of law that is the purpose of our lives.
Nether corrupted DC, the media, nor corporate oligarchs shall allow Ron to win the election, they have too much to lose I think. If not by outright FRAUD then by some other scheme of nefarious malignecy shall they contrive to continue their felonies upon the constitution, and it's free peoples.
But then again, perhaps GOD might have different plans.

Vote Fraud!! I feel like we do so well in everything else but the very problem that will cost us the Election if we don't do something about it, Gets very little attention from my point of view.
We had two major elections and in both already we have proof of either straight Fraud, or open for fraud which I am certain had been taken advantage of. I like this article because it reminds us that we do have the power and we are beginning to understand how to use it, but let it be known that we have to figure out at the very least how to diminish the FRAUD efforts if we really want to get Ron Paul elected.
It is unacceptable that we see things point to FRAUD in both states, but nothing is seriously being done about it. If we think that we can turn our backs on this and just pretend, "oh so what", or leave it to some interdependent group that may or may not really have our best interest at heart, you might as well forget a win.

Is IP the next Slavery issue
We are having our freedoms taken away so that a relatively minor industry (entertainment) which has 1/10 the revenue of non IP industries like the garment industry, can maintain its monopolistic advantages.
Mainstream media is right in the middle of this too, and we'd all be better off without them.
They've invested with an expectation of IP protection, so to cut it off flat out could would be unfair on some, especially some smaller production companies.
Here's a solution! Do what we should have done with slavery in the US, instead of having a huge expensive war, where we are gonna lose our freedoms and the power to promote liberty. Buy these entertainment and media companies out. A fee in return for ending IP laws, to free the internet forever. It would cost a fraction of the latest bank bailouts.
We know this is an excuse for government to take over the net. Remove that window for them.

Bango..Nails it..I was just saying this yesterday. That this is all about stopping these movements. We all know that the Ron Paul revolution and OWS and the TEA Party etc. would not be what they are without the Internet. Hell this movement is like having a few hundred thousand watchdog journalists reporting your every action. In hours sometimes minutes we have exposed bias, fraud, lies and truth. We put the MSM to shame and the PTB can't keep up with us. I think a lot of us saw this coming a long time ago. I mean what other choice do they have? They either have to change and start being truthful and transparent or they have to find a way to lock society back in the dark. I don't think your going to get this back in the box. lol It's a beautiful thing to witness.

While SOPA itself isn't as restrictive as indicated, yet ... it certainly puts the apparatus in place to do exactly what is described. That's how liberty dies in America, a little at a time. Just like NDAA and Obama's hollow signing statement that he wouldn't detain Americans. Maybe he wouldn't, but the method to do so is ready for the next guy. Nothing to worry about there ... until later.
SOPA is the start of something scary ... the ultimate end of free speech, free transfer of knowledge, political coordination and as the article describes, the end of oversight of the elites we should be able to control.
My fear, other that the above, is that Congressmen have no technical knowledge whatsoever of how the internet even works and even if their intentions are good, they'll break it beyond repair so it can't continue to expand and grow.
On a related note, I really liked Dr. Paul's comments on SOPA in tonight's debate because he finally highlighted the fact that he CAN work with other legislators to get things done in DC.

It is a no brainier for anyone who can read. War, or not? Bring our troops home, or send more. Recover our economic structure, or all fail and depression and more war comes. Nazi Isramerica, or America the good ol USA? Easy choice. Only one candidate stands head and shoulders above all the others and it does not take a genus to figure it out. Ron Paul is America’s Last Chance. ANY OTHER CHOICE FOR LEADERSHIP WILL END AMERICA AS YOU ALL KNOW IT! Choose well.
Just GO AHEAD AND MAKE A CHART comparing the past voting records of all the republicans and obama too and then you will see the truth. The question is, will you still deny your own eyes and heart of truth for what you believe on the drug TV and zio-media-propaganda following course with the sheeple headed off the cliff, or will you turn into the wind and lead the pack out of danger and destruction?

The key to restoring - and keeping our Republic is a simple one. Because ...
They don't have the *right* to spy on us, restrict us, and control our destiny.
It is our right to spy on *them*, restrict *them*, and control *their* destiny.
As an elected representative of the We the People .. they need to be forfeiting some rights.
Not us.
Because they are the ones elected and therefore entrusted to protect our freedoms, our property, and our lives ...
Failing at this task (defending the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Rule of Law) means that they influence the fate of hundreds of millions of people with their failure.
So - for the duration of their term of office:
- They should be under surveillance 24 hours a day.
- They should have no other source of income other than an allotted salary equal to the national average.
- They are prohibited from accepting money or gifts of any kind during their term of office.
- Campaign financing is publicly funded and allotted equally
(DC housing, meals, courtesy transportation provided)
- They should prohibited from making short or long them investments of any kind
- Any laws introduced or passed in deviation from the clear language of the Constitution - as a body describing a limited national government confined to the powers of Article 1, Section 8?
This is grounds for immediate review to determine penalty .. which runs from permanent expulsion from any government position, up to and including prison sentences commensurate with the extent of the crime.
This is serious business.
Lets see how many psychopathic criminals would volunteer for the job then.
