Don't Be Discouraged: What the Mainstream Media Wont Tell You About Iowa
I'll be the first to admit it; I was hoping for a better finish last night then 5th place. That said, it was a very strong 5th place with 10% of the vote. Iowa is a state that is HEAVILY dependent on farm subsides. I've been reading a great book called "The Omnivore's Dilemma" (thanks John) and it spends much time on the science and politics of our food.
Thanks to farm subsides, Iowa is no longer the mythic Americana of a Norman Rockwell painting. Rather, it is one of the most controlled and regulated states in the nation. The family farms of Iowa are all but destroyed, and those that do hang on are subject to a perverse reliance on the very forces that are destroying them - government intervention in their economy.
A lesser politician would have gone to Iowa and told the people there what they wanted to hear - that the subsidies they have been relying on would continue unabated under a Paul administration. That's not what Ron Paul did. He told them that he would end the subsides, and that they would be forced to rely on the free-market to make their living.
That is not an easy thing for people so conditioned to believe that their lives and business depend on government handouts to hear, and still Dr. Paul received 10% of the vote. Iowa was a victory for our movement, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
As we go forward, let's take a brief look at our competition. Mike Huckabee was the winner last night, but he is a fundamentally flawed candidate. "According to The Associated Press: “Huckabee’s career has also been colored by 14 ethics complaints and a volley of questions about his integrity, ranging from his management of campaign cash to his use of a nonprofit organization to subsidize his income to his destruction of state computer files on his way out of the governor’s office.” And what was Governor Huckabee’s response to these ethics allegations? Rather than cooperating with investigators, Huckabee sued the state ethics commission twice and attempted to shut the ethics process down."*
Mitt Romney has be given a major defeat. He spent 20 million in Iowa, only to come in a distant second.
Fred Thompson and John McCain are still running on fumes. The men have no new ideas and even less energy and enthusiasm.
Giuliani... I don't think he received 2% last night. We beat him by 10 to 1!
"Live Free or Die" is the motto of New Hampshire. If the voters there live by their creed, Tuesday will be a very good day for Dr. Paul.
