What was the Jefferson County formula for success?

0 votes

Ron Paul won this southeast Iowa county (Fairfield is the county seat) with over 35% of the vote. Has anyone heard what caused this success? We should find out what happened there, and use it to help reproduce those same results elsewhere.

I don't know if there is a direct correlation, but......

my gut tells me that people who read the local newspaper are more likely to be politically active!

Fairfield in in Jefferson County

I am from Iowa, and not far from Jefferson County. Fairfield is there and it is an extremely progressive city. Lots of educated, free thinking people. Weird that it is in Iowa, I know (no offense, I'm from there, but there is a reason I moved away!)

So the culture there is part of the reason, however, I'm corresponding with some folks there to see just what it is they did to get such a high number for Ron Paul. I know some very successful activists there who will surely have some great ideas.

I believe if all counties in

I believe if all counties in Iowa could have had better communication between each other, we could have provided this helpful information weeks ago, instead of the day after the caucus.

Maybe the way the meetup group website operates could be changed to accommodate this. I actually find the meetup site cumbersome to talk back and forth on.

ANOTHER VERY IMPORTANT item

I almost forgot one of the keys to our success.... and that is we have a very committed county RP chairman, Dr. Brian. H., that worked tirelessly, along with another group of committed individuals. We also had a very visible campaign office (thank you Keri C.)
Identify those folks and help them out. Organization is key.
On to NH!!!!!

and one more thing, when it comes to voting "trust, but verify".
we had paper ballots. push for that if it's possible.

Jefferson County Factors

Thanks, folks, for providing some infomation on our success in Jefferson County! I've added some icons to the IA4RonPaul map so we can start to see these factors visually:

IA4RonPaul, Ron Paul's results by county --
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=100671950542040968...

- Meetups, newspaper ads, campaign office, dedicated volunteers paid off! They are now on the map. It looks like the benefits even spilled over to the neighboring Van Buren and Davis Counties? Or were there other volunteers doing stuff there?

close proximity

Since Fairfield offers more jobs than the counties of Van Buren and Davis, lots of people travel to Fairfield for work and mostly likely discovered RP this way. I'm uncertain of other activists in those areas but I know this, that once they hear the RP pitch they appreicate it and understand it. More of the same, exposure to RP's message in whatever form that is, newspaper articles, 1 to 1 talks, signs for Dr. Paul, meet ups, etc.
We're making headway, we just have to continue and the movement will grow. Iowa's turnout was historical 220,000 Dems. and 114,000 for the Reps. Compare that with 04 124.000 for D and 87,000 for R.
People know this is important. The war, the economy, too much govt. I believe they want Real change. Dr. Paul is the answer.
Stay focused, get the message out, and watch this rEVOLution grow.

and of course, "trust, but verify" when it comes to the vote.
On to NH!!!!!

Fairfield is a center for Transcendental Meditation

TMers are interested in health freedom and world peace among other things. They are also often involved in the forefront of many different kinds of movements. Here is article about their meetup that appeared before the caucus. http://www.kansascity.com/news/nation/story/416439.html

TM sounds like the reason for the success

I remember reading that article.

Maybe we need to push the nutritional supplements issue. There are many people who take supplements. I know Dr. Mercola endorsed Ron Paul and promoted him in his newsletter.

Maybe do a slim jim on this and hand them out to people who shop at Whole Foods and other places like that.

Jefferson County is where the U. of Iowa is

Jefferson County is where the U. of Iowa is

Lots of young internet voters for Paul

incorrect about U of Iowa

U.of Iowa is in Iowa City, 100 miles from Jefferson county.

There is a university of sorts inJefferson County---the Maharishi University of Management. It's a transcendental meditation study center. This was the focal point for a flash-in-the-pan political third party in the 1990's--the "Natural Law Party." They ran candidates for office, including president, in several elections.

Whether that had anything to do with Dr. Paul's success in Jefferson County, I cannot say from a distance. Far more likely is the reason explained on another Daily Paul posting: Ron Paul backers bought a series of detailed advertisements in the weekly small-town newspapers in Jefferson County. This inexpensive tactic was a way to give people enough in-depth acquaintance with Dr. Paul's positions and the reasons behind them---far more effective than trying to compete on the already over-crowded broadcast media with compressed 30- or 60-second commercials.

This had to be done over a period of weeks. Not enough time to do it in New Hampshire---but the campaign does have the money to run such a series in DAILY papers in NH, if they are alert!!

Everyone in the Super-Tuesday states should look into this; try to learn how they did it in Jefferson County, and see whether you can raise the resources to repeat it wherever you may be at.

in our case (Jeff. co.) the articles were locally funded and gave RP exposure and gave some depth to the message. short and to the point.

and there were LOTS of signs, slim jims, letters to the editor, and enthusiastic young folks.
By contrast, in one precinct on the Dem. side, afriend told me that all the people sitting around the Billary "tent" were retired folks.
Tap into that young spirit.
Give them responsibility (in our precinct the party planks were written ahead of time by on e of the 20 somethins'), take them seriously, and they will continue to help the RP rEVOLution grow.
Stay focused on the message, talk to everyone, and on to NH!!!!!!!

Bump, and how can we repeat this success?

bump.

NH and forward, is it too late????

zoom in

...on the map (google). There's a town called Libertyville in Jefferson County. That's gotta be Ron Paul country!

We need to learn from Jefferson County that advertising in local papers works. They had 35% for Ron Paul there just by running cheap ads in local papers week after week. Our founding fathers sold the constitution via local papers with the Federalist Papers. We need to do the same.

From one of the meetups in Jefferson County.

Few people in Jefferson County read the Des Moines Register so ad buys there don't reach the rural folk hardly at all. The small local papers have very little political advertising and would love to have the business. And it is CHEAP. We had an ad in the weekly paper 8 column inches for $55 a week for 13 weeks straight. And change the ad every week. We ran larger ads in the daily paper as well. Some are at: http://ronpaul.meetup...

We did a newspaper insert printed 2 sides letter size paper - RIDICULOUSLY CHEAP way to reach 2500 people - so much cheaper than direct mail. Those mail items the campaign sends must have cost a fortune, by comparison an insert cost us $150 to reach 2500 plus $120 for photocopying or under 11 cents per household. These local orientated messages I think are way more effective than direct mail.

This is what I suggested

This is what I suggested people do awhile back, run RP ads in as many newspapers as possible before the primary. Sometimes print ads work better than t.v. ads because some people mute the t.v. when commercials come on, or leave the room to do something else. And some people do not listen to the radio, so print ads(if done well) can reach people that would otherwise not be reached.

Jefferson county

Jefferson county and Fairfield specifically are unique in this way. Many have known about RP for a long time and respect his views. That made for a core of people who could get his message out easily. Whenever I speak with people about Dr. Paul I rarely get rolling eyes or he's a (fill in the blank). Less govt., less taxes, more prosperity, no foreign intervention. It's straightforward, precise and folks like it. I never talk about anything else, that is, side issues (again fill in the blank).
In our causus setting, half of the RP supporters were under 30 and were very enthusiastic. Both speakers for RP were under 30 (21 yr. old F and 28 yr. old M, veteran) They knew his message and could communicate it well. ( We had a contest to determine who would speak since so many wanted to).
The best advertising is word of mouth and we used it. We have a meetup group that meets reg. on Fridays at a local rest. and in the past we;ve had a constitutional study group.
I believe that with all of our combined efforts, money bombs, blimps, speaking with our neighbors, RP's message will continue to grow and catch on. There's along way to go and our first effort was a very good one.Dr. Paul got more ind. voters than any other candidate, was proves RP point that the bases of both Dem. and Rep (vanilla and french vanilla) is very small. Look for the uncommitted and give them the pitch. People respond to it and understand it and are longing for it. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Everyone gets that. It's in our genes!!
On to NH!!!! and thanks for all your efforts.

Yes! It's Important we find this out ASAP

Who was responsible? We need to know what we can do to duplicate that effort!

Congratulations Jefferson County...
we salute you!

Moderators, can we post this on the main page?

Its a very important topic - and we need to get the answers out, digested and implemented in NH and beyond.
