A Cult is a top-down organisation; a movement is horizontal

That's completely stupid. A Cult is a top-down organisation; a movement is horizontal. Therefore, using the word "cult" is insulting, denigrating, and inappropriate.

One may use the pop term "cult figure" to describe the Ron Paul phenomenon, but that implies popularity rather than top-down command and control.

The classic political cult of our age is Lyndon LaRouche. He controls LPAC through a board of directors called the NCAC, and filters commands to supporters on the street through smaller orgs called LCs. The youngest, newest sign-waver receives direct orders to wave signs and collect money at every step. Disobedience is punished through psychological methods.

Horizontal mass movements are in no way a cult. Neither Dr. Paul nor anyone in his campaign or Campaign For Liberty issues directives; nor do they live off the money collected by followers. (Well, campaign guys might, but that's only for the campaign cycle.)

I would say, President Obama had a cult-like following, because there WERE orders being given to various lower rung leaders to express direct worship: such as various teachers unions in LA who ordered teachers to have their classes sing songs praising Obama.

"Cowards & idiots can come along for the ride but they gotta sit in the back seat!"

Of course however,

the media wouldn't be "cult-like", now would it?

Nah!
It's simply a coincidence of exact sameness.
