I took a Ron Paul sign to a Gingrich rally today

I just returned from a 9:00 am GOP/Tea Party rally for Newt Gingrich in Mount Dora, Florida. I took an official Ron Paul For President 2012 sign and held it as I walked through the crowd of several hundred people, mostly retirees, who seemed very supportive of Mr. Gingrich. I dressed nicely and smiled and said hello to everyone I met. I did not see any other Ron Paul signs but I got mostly positive comments from many people, including a number of elderly women who gave me big smiles.

There was a huge media presence and I tried to stand in view of the big cameras but did not wave my sign at them. At one point a security guy in a dark suit approached me. He stared intently in my face, said I was on private property and ask me to put my sign away. I smiled and politely said I was just expressing my opinion, that I was being respectful of the people around me and not confronting anyone. Since I was 20 feet or so from where Newt passed by on the way to the stage I guess he thought I was not going to cause a problem so he left me alone. A roving reporter for a local paper spotted me, took several pictures and then asked for my name.

After listening for awhile to "the one person that has stood for the right and who was responsible for all good things that have happened in America in the last 30 years, the only hope for the future," I had heard enough. While walking towards the back of the crowd I kept the sign up and many people had a chance to see it, if only for a moment.

I've been fairly active on various blogs, contribute regularly to the campaign and have talked to many friends and family about Ron Paul, but this is the first time I've expressed my support in a public place. I did feel quite alone but I just focused on each individual I met and was pleasantly surprised by the mild or positive responses I got. I don't know if I swayed any votes but I had to put my beliefs into action for my own self respect as a committed supporter of Ron Paul.

bump for courage

but, i will suggest u think about spending your time in other ways to directly help the campaign.
see, the media is not going to give us a surge, so the only thing we can do is go directly to the voters with the message of Dr.Paul.
that can be done by Canvassing, phone from home and talking to your relatives, friends, neighbors, etc.

Dr.Ron Paul's 2002 Predictions

You, sir, need a Ron Paul

You, sir, need a Ron Paul hat. You can wear it everywhere and, unlike a Ron Paul shirt, you don't have to wash it.

Thank you!

Congratulations on having the courage to do it; that was the right way to do things and you had the gumption to stand your ground.

That's very good.

I saw a comment here suggesting you should not have given your real name. That's hogwash.

First, there wouldn't be Secret Service unless Newt has recently been granted such protection (I haven't heard that).

Second, they wouldn't normally be approved to lie to you about who they are.

Third, who really wants to live in a world where you are afraid to say who you are? Being afraid like that is kinda spineless and hardly what is needed in any movement.

Finally, you probably saw the people enough to know in fact that they were media.

Again, thank you for your good work.

I should have done the same..

I live in Florida and I work right next to where Newt was speaking in Naples. If I didn't have prior plans that I could not miss (I'm studying for the CFA), I was going to do as you did. I was going to wear a Ron Paul t-shirt and go hear Newt speak. If nothing else, I wanted to be a respectful presence for Ron Paul supporters. I feel it is important for us to make our presence known, yet always remain respectful as to never harm the reputation of Dr. Paul with our actions. Especially with Newt, I believe a lot of people go hear him speak even if they aren't planning on voting for him just because he is such a great speaker. I would have gone just to hear him in person, to experience it. I believe that whenever and wherever we can show our support for Paul it is always helpful. You never know, there could be other Paul supporters there also who have come to experience the speech. Your presence could reignite their passion for Dr. Paul and inspire them to do more for the campaign. No effort of support is ever useless.

Sign waving = WASTE OF TIME!

Knock on doors, hand out pamphlets, etc. Waving a sign in front of a camera or on an intersection does NOTHING!!

accomplish something

I waved a huge RP sign a few times 4 years ago. I also knocked on doors, made phone calls, wrote letters to editor, distributed slim-jims, etc.

This time I am focused on what seemed to be most effective:
1) phone calls http://phone.ronpaul2012.com
2) letters to editor
3) slim-jims personally given to people

Each of us learns what is effective. Going into my fifth year of being involved, I can say phone calls are the most effective way to identify potential supporters.

You've got nerve kid, real nerve I will give you that!

But, do NOT be so sure...."A roving reporter for a local paper spotted me, took several pictures and then asked for my name." Secret service undercover does this all the time. They make lists. They use that to bar you next time. In such situations, give your name backwards so that the last sound like its the middle. Don't clear up the confusion.

Being spineless doesn't win, isn't persuasive to anyone whatsoever and is just plain unamerican and stupid.

What Secret Service? Newt doesn't have the protection, does he?

And, why lie? Why would someone want to give a false name to media? That kinda destroys the good of being there doing what this Ron Paul supporter was doing. It maybe gets some free media for Ron Paul, which is the whole point.

I'm constantly amazed at how some people can be so utterly spineless.

I'm more amazed when they go out of their way to recommend that lame condition to others.

Of course NWO Newt has protection

NWO Newt has a sincere fan club (talk about cult, there you go).

I see nothing wrong in people protecting themselves in public and not giving thier real name. When I petitioning for Nader's ballot access, "Do you believe an Independent candidate has the right to be on the ballot?" You would not believe how many Mickey Mouses I signed up. ;))

Anyways, with the present administration believing it needs to create jobs, I'm sure SS is a big part of that, and I'm positive NWO Newt is covered.

For primary season contenders to gain Secret Service protection what typically happens is the president orders it.

It was ordered for Herman Cain and to my knowledge has not been ordered for any other GOP candidate.

I've seen no news item about it and it always is reported when it happens.

And isn't usually granted when requested?

I saw that Newt explored it after he made his statement about the death penalty for drud cartels to get the death penalty http://dailycaller.com/2011/11/28/newt-give-the-death-penalt...

I don't think it has to be reported, after all, it would make him look like a coward and not able to be close to people as he wants to be, as that's part of what being electable is?

he has no SS

Give it up.

He has no Secret Service.

Secret Service is noticeable, that's the whole point of them being there.

Besides, it's a public agency and YES it must be reported.

Can't believe a hundred plus showed up!

If it was RP, it would have been 5-20 times larger of a crowd.

Thank you!

Obama came

to Arizona. I wanted to go with RON PAUL signs...But I had to go to work to pay for all the people that can't get jobs or don't bother to work.

Nothing wrong with truthful expression!

I'm glad to hear you made it out in one piece! Those Gingrich supporters are an ornery bunch!

No doubt you have some

No doubt you have some cajones on you, but I question the value of this type of activism. What would we think of a Romney or Newt supporter showing up at a Ron Paul event with a sign? We'd roll our eyes and dismiss him. It isn't a perfect parallel, but I think the sentiment is largely the same.

The kind of people that show up to a Newt rally are active enough to know Ron's name. What they need is to be convinced he's right on all the issues, not to get his name in front of them. And sadly the way people are you may have helped to convince some of them Paul and his supporters are just a bunch of overzealous kooks.

So do I think you did more harm than good? I really can't say. Just raising the concern as a possibility, and something to consider for the next time.

Persona influenced one person (who may influence more people) then he did more good than harm. And those who didn't like his presence weren't going to vote RP anyway.

Brilliant work! I don't know

Brilliant work! I don't know if I have balls like that tbh. I'm surprised people weren't trying to fight.

Your story made me feel GOOD!

How uplifting it is that you strolled into a Newt Rally to represent Ron Paul, spreading your message with a sense of peace, grace, and maturity. How you choose to dress and conduct yourself can make ALL the difference in the world. You COULD have chosen to create a raucous using abrasive behavior. I despise that sort of behavior. Instead, you spoke volumes by simply setting a humble and respectable example. Your message was "heard" loud and clear. Bravo!!!

2nd that comment

Well said!

"You are a den of vipers and thieves."

I mean to rout you out!

-Just because you are among us, does not make you with us

-The door is wide open, anything can slither in

Good Job

It takes a huge amount of confidence and respect to do what you did. Although you may have felt alone, the reality is that you are not. Keep it up.

Hello, my name is Andrew Ryan and I'm here to ask you a question: is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?

You are kinda awesome.

You are kinda awesome.

Show your support for Ron Paul and inspire others at new grassroots site:
( Consider uploading a picture or video of your sign or event, etc .)

That security guy who approached you...

...is the one who assaulted a lady and Adam Kokesh in NH. You must have had an exceedingly good demeanor for him not to have ripped that sign out of your hands as he did to the lady in NH.

Maybe also...

...the Gingrich people are toning down their reactionary tendencies as they pull into the lead. Newt and his people have to start looking Presidential if he wants to convince the masses.

Your a Good Man

I wish I could have been there with you!
Nice job!
Hope to see Dr.Paul in Indiana. I think in May.

Bravo Persona.

Good work patriot!

-Ron Paul

completely advocate this!

good work! we must do this en mass to romney, gingrich, and less so santorum.

and there are times when it is appropriate to Rudy-fi the opposition! if you were involved in the revolution in 2008, you know what i mean!

santorum is a HOT HEAD and easily roused.

lots of signs and camera exposure at opponents events, especially romney's

questions from the audience when appropriate...make them difficult folks!

film everything you can.

chant RON PAUL when it is the format to do so (or not) ha.

Like Daniel in the lions den!

one suggestion for next time

Make an add-on to your sign, saying "Talk to me. :)" and see if that doesn't bring in some folks to converse.

I'm just coaching, here; I've never much been one to do "in your face" things like this myself. :P Seems like the invitation should work, though....
