Your Vote is Urgently Needed on an Issue that affects all of us EQUALLY
Submitted by gmason08 on Mon, 01/30/2012 - 14:52The Issue is the Content VOTING SYSTEM. Specifically, the current system for registering DOWN votes.
As it currently stands an individual can cast a DOWN vote in a fraction of a second on a post that may have taken 30 minutes or more to create.
This can now be done both anonymously and without a trace of clue to the OP as to why the DOWN voter considers the post lacking in merit.
The Voting System was introduced as a better way to rank the relative merit of submissions. However, the commentless and anonymous DOWN vote system lends itself strongly to rankings based on factors completely unrelated to merit.
Just as the declining confidence level in the integrity of the voting mechanism for our elections causes a decline in participation in that process, a similar lack of confidence w/ the integrity of the DP Voting system can be expected to produce a similar result.
Please indicated your vote for or against changing the DOWN vote function to, as a minimum, require a screen name if not a brief comment as to why the down voter considers the post in question lacking in merit.

I'm not a big fan of the vote Up or Down system, but having a vote that cannot be made anonymously is worse. That strikes me as a system that would favor bullies and would discourage people from voting through peer pressure.

Seems to me that the opposite type system(what we now have at the DP) is a metaphor for the types of things we are fighting. The type of system we would find on an "Establishment" forum.

I generally don't bother to 'vote' a thread down
and looking at the amt of people online at any given time vs the amt of votes a typical thread gets, its safe to say Im not alone. Ill vote down if a thread is really bad and counterproductive (not if i just disagree) but it's pretty rare. On the other hand, if a thread is uplifting , edifying, encouraging or contains valuable instruction/info- then i'll usually vote it up. A thread has to be REALLY bad for me to vote it down. I've seen threads with -32 or something and it just looks like a dischordant note. One asks "why is this obviously unproductive thread bumping off any number of beneficial threads?" I just think it adds to a negativity i dont like to see here. I disagree with the opinions in threads constantly, but i dont think the way to deal with a difference of opinion is to vote it down. I may express my opinion and move along, or avoid it altogether- but it usually takes a troll trying to cause damage to elicit a -1 from me. As for you, gmason, youre family : ) I may roll my eyes lol, but i dont see any reason to 'down vote' anything ive seen you post : )

In simplest terms my issue w/ the current voting scheme is twofold:
1) Vulnerable to forum control efforts:
That is, if a coordinated group of anti-RP peeps, for example, wanted to influence the DP in a way that was damaging-that vulnerability would assist such efforts.
2) Anti-constructive dialog:
No problem w/ anyone having a "Down Vote" view of a post, however, if someone fails to leave a comment giving a clue to WHY the DV then the poster and forum are deprived of an important part of the constructive criticism feedback loop.

It's funny, but I'm not predisposed to popularity contests in general. I think if the +/- system were tied to the importance or relevance of the thread topic rather than just being a " beauty contest" ( which it seems to be ) then the +/- system would be a better bellwether of the threads at large.
I think that's what the origional intent was, but I also think it's possible that it's been co-opted by varrious " friends" groupings. If some have a disdain say for " newbies" and feel they haven't " paid their DP dues" yet, then a - is the reward for what could be a very valuable post, that's unconscionably insipid as it's self-destructive IMHO.
Could it be Possiable that a cism has unintentionally be caused, that by in large is fragmenting the true purpose of the DP? That purpose of course is to support Ron Paul and the Constitution, bill of rights, and our liberty. This " cism" works against us as a "team of individuals", perhaps we might work together to figure out how to not enter into a " cism "?

The reverse can also apply. How come people only seem to care when they get downvoted?
Are we now to assume that every downvote is the work of a 'troll'? (an extremely vaguely defined word with an ever-expanding definition, much like terrorist).
Another point is that by implementing this, negative topics will keep being bumped over and over...just to tell others that the topic in question isn't worth reading in the first place.

Not at all. In fact, it is part of my point in this and related posts that w/ the current system-one is left w/ all manner of questions and no clues.
The current system would allow someone to just chalk it up as the work of "trolls" and no one could refute that claim because there is no evidence of any kind. That allows anyone to say it is whatever they wish it to be.
