Joe Paterno, Ron Paul and Media Bias

Joe Paterno and Ron Paul are both legends who gained influence by challenging the status quo. Paterno challenged his student athletes to be successful on the football field, in the classroom, and most importantly in life. Ron Paul has challenged the special interests in Washington, and has proven that it's possible to be a member of congress for 20 years and never vote to raise taxes, never vote for an unbalanced budgeted, and never vote against the constitution. Both are humble, small town men who have positively impacted this world and both have been treated unfairly by traditional media over the course of the last few months.

Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to meet Coach Paterno before he passed and have yet to meet Dr. Ron Paul. In spite of this, outside of my family, these two men have had the most profound impact on my life. Through their actions they have inspired millions. Joe Paterno's passing on January 22 left a chasm in the Penn State community and across the collegiate landscape. The example that Joe set by the way he lived and coached, Success with Honor, has provided a template for future generations to embrace. Dr. Ron Paul has gained international notoriety by being the lone consistent voice for fiscal restraint and personal liberty in an otherwise corrupt political system. These men have not led perfect lives (who among us has) and the main purpose of this post is not to defend Joe Paterno or Ron Paul against a singular event or lapse in judgment. Everyone makes mistakes. JoePa's and Dr. Paul's triumphs and contributions far outweigh their missteps. Long after they are gone from this earth their good works will continue to positively impact humanity.

Joe Paterno has been lambasted by the media because; in the media's view he did not do enough to stop a monster from preying on children. Paterno was notified by a graduate assistant who claimed to have witnessed retired Penn State assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky, fondling and acting inappropriately in a shower with a boy of about 10 years of age. Paterno notified the Athletic Director and Finance Director who oversaw the University Police. Joe Paterno, not having witnessed the crime and Sandusky no longer a part of his staff, did the most he could by notifying his superiors of the incident. The media narrative that took shape accused Paterno of not acting morally and depicted him as a villain in an incident where he had no such role. The assumption that Joe Paterno did not act morally implies that it is immoral to expect your superiors to handle their jobs in a capable manner. Throughout Joe Paterno's 61 years at Penn State, and right up until his passing, he set an example that positively influenced the work ethic of hundreds of thousands and inspired that same number to expect to achieve greatness in their lives. One of JoePa's renowned quotes states, "Believe deep down in your heart that you are destined to do great things." Joe Paterno lived his life by those words and hoped all Penn Staters, not just his football players, would work to make a positive impact in this world. Over the course of his tenure at Penn State he donated millions back into the University and as a sign of gratitude a campus library bears his name. This is fitting, because Paterno cared more about education and impacting the lives of young people, than he did about wins on the football field. Joe and his wife Sue were active community leaders and contributed to the Special Olympics and many other worthwhile causes. Weeks after being terminated he donated $100,000 to the school that he loved. Joe Paterno was Penn State, and as a Penn State alumnus I feel obligated to assist in restoring and enhancing his legacy.

Ron Paul has been attacked for "racist newsletters" published under his name while he was practicing medicine between stints in congress. The barrage of attacks and negative articles that were written in opposition to him were only equaled by the amount of negative diatribe being levied against Paterno during the same time. Instead of listening to the speeches Dr. Paul has given for the last 30 years, consistently saying the same thing, the media chose to attack politically incorrect newsletters from 20 years ago that he did not author or approve. The misguided journalism distracted voters from important issues that only Ron Paul was offering solutions. No other candidates expose a pro US foreign policy that would end the ongoing perpetual wars our nation in waging and only go to war, as the constitution states, when declared by congress. Ron Paul has served 20 years in the U.S. House of Representatives and prior to that he worked as an obstetrician-gynecologist during the 1960s and 1970s, delivering more than 4,000 babies. Additionally, he has sought the Presidency three times. Throughout his time in congress Dr. Paul has been a consistent voice for liberty and has always stuck to his principles by never voting against the constitution. It is this principled stance that has convinced hundreds of thousands of fervent activists to support the incorruptible Dr. Paul's message. In a time, when every other candidate is owned by special interests, lobbyists do not even waste time meeting with Dr. Paul. He has been a consistent voice in opposition to the crony capitalism that defines business in Washington and on Wall Street. There is not another politician that has the principled voting record to back up his promises to restore the republic and adherence to the constitution.

Joe

In my experience, I believe that the firing of Joe contributed to his demise. I could not even imagine for someone who had given so much to his work be treated in the way he was. I have no ties to Penn State. Joe committed no crime.

This event must of been so stressing for Joe and broke his heart. His family did not deserve this either.

He should of been allowed to complete the season imo. The board members should be ashamed of themselves for what they did to him.

You should not be pairing Paul with Paterno

Paterno was committed to the Penn State and football. Ron Paul was committed to the preservation of liberty. Big difference.

Paterno was a life long friend of Jerry Sandusky, and that friendship, along with his fealty to Penn State and his team, compromise his moral integrity to follow up. He had the position and the power to keep making noise until an police official investigation was held. He should have at least encouraged his assistant to keep pursing the issue, and backed him up.

But he did not. How many children do you think suffered under that creep Sandusky since then, because Paterno would not follow through? He put the Penn State football program ahead of those kids. A man's sports platitudes about honor and integrity mean nothing until that man is willing to throw away all his material possessions, position, and fame for the truth. Ron Paul paid the price for years in congress as a minority of one standing up for the Constitution. He endured being marginalized, insulted, and ignored for his integrity. Did Paterno do the same, risking the good name and his beloved footfall team in order to save future generations of innocents from the pervert Sandusky. No.

Could you imagine Ron Paul not following through on the Federal reserve like he did for 30 years, culminating in his recent audit last year that revealed trillions more the Fed gave to businesses and foreign interests?

this must be new to you Semper

When you report something to the officials in charge of the police department (Penn State has it's own police, post office, telephone exchange, etc - it's a city) you are told to keep your mouth shut about it and act as though nothing had happened or you jeopardize the investigation. You don't keep calling and hammering at people. Seriously.

As far as he knew - and as far as anyone knows - the police were investigating it. This was trial by media.

Is there ANY edvidence

of an ongoing investigation following the report? If there was, why hasn't it come forth by Penn state to exonerate Paterno? Most likely because there wasn't any real investigation, that's why!

Campus police are NOT police in the same sense as the local and state police. They do not have the jurisdiction to investigate a matter like this on their own hook. Paterno should have went straight to the local police when he saw nothing was happening after time passed.

Uninformed

The University Park police are the same as the local police. They are a full police force within the zip code of University Park (actually a separate entity from State College). Besides, the local police and Centre county DA had evidence of Sandusky on tape admitting to similar allegations and didn't go forward with an investigation or charge anyway.

But I think the point of the article was the media bias displayed in both situations, regardless of how you judge Paterno.

Thanks for posting.

One thing is for sure...like

One thing is for sure...like JoePa or not, he didn't break any laws. Period, end of story. He reported the "alleged" incident to his superiors and campus police.

Everyone needs a fall guy.

Thanks for the comment

Yes, Jerry Sandusky is a terrible despicable man. If even 1% of the charges against him are true he should never see the light of day again. You missed the entire point of my post. You have bought into the media narrative. This is very similar to the false media narrative that you fight against in support of Dr. Paul.

If you read the entire post you would understand that I did not compare Joe Paterno or Ron Paul's philosophical or political beliefs in any way whatsoever. I compared the treatment that they received from the media.

There were a lot of people fooled by Jerry Sandusky. Paterno did everything he could do with the information he had. He notified his superiors. He did not witness a crime. Did you expect him to walk over to Sandusky's house with a shotgun and kill him based on what someone told him they saw? We don't even know exactly what Paterno was told. The entire grand jury transcripts won't be made available until the trial. What you are basing your assumptions on is a Grand Jury Presentment which is intentionally biased because it’s only purpose and the only testimony included is that necessary to indict. If you've read this far, read the post again and respond. Thanks

It's a shame

that the media can contort a situation into Joe Paterno being a villain. I've met the man, and many i went to school with met him...by showing up at his house and knocking on the door...his arms were open to everyone up there and he helped untold amounts of kids during the decades he worked there...whether they were in the football program or not.

Unfortunately schools have strict rules about the way situations like that are to be handled and Paterno followed it to a "T". There have been numerous lawyers who have come out in defense of Joe and stated that had he done anything but what he did, he could have been legally pursued. He followed the rules...or the "constitution" of PSU....if those rules aren't deemed acceptable by the people then amend them...just like you would the constitution. Now the two guys who were informed of the situation and did nothing should be pursued by the strongest action the law would enable...many children suffered needlessly as they sat around and tried to protect a football program and college name, rather than innocent children.

This case didn't just turn up, it had been around for years...it's only when the media caught wind and twisted and molded it to their liking to generate viewership and portray the only man that did what he was supposed to in the situation as the evil twisted villain...and left the real perpetrators unaccounted for in the spotlight of the media jury....a great injustice that eventually killed a great man.

You should watch the funeral that was shown on TV if you get the time....it might change your opinion somewhat.

I agree with the poster, JoePa and RoPa are two individuals i will always look up to.

Terrible idea indeed. Paterno

Terrible idea indeed. Paterno was a great coach, yes, but also let one of the biggest scandals in Penn State history happen under his nose. He knew about it, told the heads and then did nothing. That shit was not cool and not something Paul would ever let happen.

How can you say

How can you say, "He knew about it, told the heads and then did nothing."

He told the athletic director and the director of finance who oversaw the University Police. The man met with the chief of the University police weekly. The University Police are the police on the campus at Penn State. If there is an emergency on campus and you call the police, the University Police show up. There are a lot of people at fault in this tragic situation, but Joe Paterno is not one of them. Both of the men he notified of the crime are being charged with perjury. Joe did all he could. Did you expect him to put Sandusky under citizens arrest?

Don't allow the media to determine how you view reality.

I think what people are missing..

Is that Joe DID go to the police. People are acting like he was covering this up or something. He went to the people in charge of the Police at Penn State. That's who you are supposed to report these things to. I'm truly missing what people are saying he should have done more of? Go to the media so they could try Sandusky like they ended up doing to Joe? I could understand the outrage if joe didn't report this or tried to cover it up, but he did the EXACT OPPOSITE and reported it to the proper channels. Maybe people think he should have gone under cover as a 12 year old boy at the Penn State showers, I don't know, but I've yet to hear anyone describe exactly what they mean by "he should have done more".

exactly. I live near Coastal

exactly. I live near Coastal Carolina University. This university has a police force that looks as well armed as any state trooper....driving state of the art high performance Dodge Chargers. If I were Paterno, I would have assumed the proper authorities WERE in full knowledge of the "alleged" event(s)...and that those events were part of an ongoing investigation...or there wasn't enough evidence to move forward.

Last I checked, citizens are not privy to information regarding ongoing police investigations.

Great article!

2 heroes of mine as well, albeit for different reasons. Let's become the media!

Thanks

Thanks bud. Enjoyed listening to you on thenewamericanmedia.com radio shows today. Thanks for inviting me on as a guest. It was fun as always.
