My Experience Caucusing in Nevada

Today marked my second time caucusing for Ron Paul, I of course caucused and delegated for Ron back in 2008. My precinct is in an upper middle class section of Las Vegas, Summerlin to be exact, so the demographics mostly consist of older if not retired, white and a substantial L.D.S population. Out of my precinct about 19 people showed up, me and another gentlemen decided to be captain and co-captain to run our precinct caucus. We introduced ourselves, passed out the information and explained the caucus and convention process...etc.

The next step was to figure out who was volunteering to attend the county convention next month, for my precinct we needed seven. Luckily it was very easy to get the 7 volunteers. The "fun" part was next, where people would volunteer to speak about their candidate. The first candidate on the list was Newt (we went in alphabetical order), not one person shared their views on Newt, so we next went to Ron Paul. Myself and two other gentlemen shared our views on Ron Paul some of the issues consisted of:

- tort reform to control health care prices
- the debt, deficits and the Fed
- national security
- abortion

I of course spoke about he's the only veteran in the race, how RP never voted to increase taxes, an unbalanced budget, delivered babies.....etc.

After speaking about Ron Paul, it was Mitt's turn. All I heard was how Mitt saved the SLC Winter Olympics, he's able to work with Democrats as the governor of MA, his business background....etc. Then the FoxNews brain washing started to kick in. "Ron Paul wants to legalize drugs," "Ron Paul wants Iran to own a nuclear weapon," "Ron Paul is too extreme, he never got anything accomplished in Congress....."...etc.

So of course us Ron Paul supports defended Ron by making it clear Ron Paul has a consistent voting record going back 30 years, he believes certain things like drugs should be a state issue, and the biggest surprise is when I told Romney-ites that Ron Paul is the only candidate that gets twice the amount of donations from active service members than any other candidate combined! I also made it a point that Ron Paul is the only candidate that will get the votes of independents and Democrats if he was to be the nominee (I made sure to bring up "Reagan Democrats).

Afterwards, we did the vote: 12 Romney, 6 Ron Paul, 1 Gingrich, 0 Santorum and 4 of the 7 delegates that are going to represent my precinct at the Clark County Convention next month are Ron Paul supporters. I even made sure the votes were tallied correctly, personally sealed the ballot envelop and made sure it was dropped off where it was suppose to be. So even though Ron Paul didn't win the straw poll we accomplished in giving him a solid delegation to represent him next month, and as we know that's all that matters!

Thank you

Thank you for your very good work and for reporting it here.

Mike

I'm proud of you, well done!

The Winds of Change!

Well it's nice you went, but why couldn't you find more than 6

RP supporters to show up?

What the hell is wrong with RP people?

Do you not understand how serious and dire the circumstances are?

6 isn't always a small number

That was a precinct caucus, so 6 needs to be seen for what it is.

Obviously, the Ron Paul turn-out in the precinct was significant.

There are more than 1,000 pricincts in that area

How many people live in that area who can vote--over 100?

There's not reason why at least 25 people didn't show up for RP other than failure to canvas and recruit.

RP Supporters are supposed to be out there recruiting the people who aren't that interested. I mean 6 people--that's 3 couples with no other relatives. One large family could bring in more than that.

That's NOTHING.

That is incorrect.

Washington_2020,

There are more than 1,000 precincts in Clark County alone.

100 per precinct would be more than 100,000 Ron Paul voters or, about twice as many total voters as turned out to caucuses statewide.

I run large scale canvass operations professionally--and I've done so for decades.

Pay me a ton of money and I'm not going to be able to do 100 Ron Paul caucus votes per precinct. And, if you asked me (or anyone who does this kind of work professionally) you'd be told that it isn't possible.

There are many reasons for this, not the least of which being that many precincts all over the nation don't have even 100 voters.

BTW, more than any other location in the nation, Clark County Nevada makes all current voter registration publicly available, at no cost, to anyone with an internet connection. http://www.clarkcountynv.gov/Depts/election/Pages/VoterDataF...

Actually, Clark County Nevada leads the nation in providing true transparency of voter registration data, it updates the data available every 24 hours...that county is absolutely unique in the nation in this way. It's closest competitor is Harris County Texas which provides such data, very partial per voter data in a far less easily retrievable format...and Harris County Texas got the idea from Clark County Nevada.

Clark County is alone even in the State of Nevada for doing what it does.

You can check the precinct in question, or any precinct, anytime you wish.

If you do, there are some things to consider as you strive toward your goal of proving that you could have turned out 100 Ron Paul supporters in yesterday's caucus.

First, IF there even are 100 voters in that precinct, check to see how many of them are Republican voters who were registered as of the cut-off date for the caucus. There were 2 operative cut-off dates for that registration. First, there was the normal cut-off date of Dec. 31, 2011 and then there was a new cut-off date instituted late in the process, which moved it out to January 20, 2012.

Then, look at the age groups. Keep in mind that of all voters between the age of 18 and 29 typically fewer than 10% show up to vote in any presidential primary or caucus election. And that's a number that has held for New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida this year. For caucus voting almost none in that age group show up, unless it's those who show up to vote for Ron Paul.

And, the reason Ron Paul turns-out such numbers in a group which otherwise hardly participates is due to the hard work of the people all over the nation, the people like these Ron Paul supporters in Nevada who did their level best.

Because I do such things professionally I happen to have, on my desktop the full voter list for the State of Nevada and can access the current online version provided by their Secretary of State.

I assure you that no one, not anywhere, even any pro could have performed better with the resources available than did the good Ron Paul volunteers in Nevada.

Could things have been done better? In any drive run correctly it's ALWAYS possible to know some things which could have been done better. You learn, then you move on to the next step in the process which might be the next election or it might be, as it is in this case, the state convention.

At that state convention we'll know how many Ron Paul delegates are to be sent to the National convention...

Yesterday, the Ron Paul supporters in Nevada won us some delegates.

I am grateful for their hard work.

Out of curiosity

Who got the other delegates?

Great job man!

The Convention is the key.

The Convention is the key.

Thank You MikeLV

Very Good Results. Would be great to have that in every precinct.

Thanks for the report as well.

I live in Tacoma, WA and look

I live in Tacoma, WA and look forward to speaking for Ron Paul at my precinct. Any advice for those of us who have never caucused?

One thing that I haven't

One thing that I haven't heard anyone talk about at the caucus is that we should vote for Ron on principle alone if for no other reason. That could help with the older vote. That's one area where the other candidates can't compete with Ron that the older generation would respect. He's consistently principled, and even where you don't like his views, at least you know what you're getting and you know where to push back on him through the congress when he's in office. I have won a few older votes over with this line of argument alone here in Michigan. It seems to be as good as money for me thus far.

I would bring up the DOZENS of bases in Germany.

Ask them, if they fear Germany and if we can leave the German bases all but a few strategic. IE 2-3.

Tell them American Contractors get paid 130-170 dollars a day just for perdiem (depending on the strength of the EURO). Ask them if they think they can bring those jobs back to the USA so they do not have to pay PERDIEM. We have a base or 2 in ENGLAND. Last I checked, England hasn't invaded anyone in a while.

Freedom may be worth searching for.

Remember, Dont battle the govt with guns(ALONE), Beat them in court, in state legislature, or hire Ron Paul for president.

Great Job!

Too bad the Nevada Job threw the election.

I may be a vegetarian, but I'll defend to the death my right to eat meat!

Love what your doing

You defended our man good and kept a sharp eye on things. Respect!

bound delegates

I read that NV national delegates are bound to the caucus results. So, technically, wouldn't that mean that at least in the first round of voting the preference poll does have an influence?

yes but

these delegates have to move up to the state convention to be selected for national convention. Let's hope RP people look, walk, and talk sharp at state conventions and get selected.

I also caucused today

I was up in Reno. Turnout was about double from 2008. Unfortunately, most in my precinct voted for Romney. We got 4 delegates, of which I am one. When it came time to stump for our candidates, another guy gave his 2 minutes on Paul. I added that he was most likely to beat Obama if you added in independents and disenfranchised democrats.
It was interesting that the stumps for the other candidates were short, and the conversation always came back to Paul. People seemed to think he was weak on foreign policy, but I gave the proper rebuttal for that one. (I'm a veteran of the 1st gulf war). one guy wished he could put Romney's head on Paul's body!
Afterwards a nice lady came up to me and a lady Paul supporter next to me and thanked us for some interesting dialog. She was on the fence coming in, and we won her over.
Overall, I was kinda bummed at the blind support for Romney. But I met a lot of really nice people from my neighborhood. Can you believe the Romney guy next to me does Remote Viewing, and was trained by Maj. Ed Dames?
It's a crazy world.

veterans

Veterans speaking for Ron Paul are winning over many people. Keep it going veterans!

Good On You Chico

Thanks

"the Romney guy next to me does Remote Viewing, and was trained by Maj. Ed Dames?"

Good laugh with that

Would have been interesting to get him to remote view the vote totaling room;-)

Congrats

and thanks for the report

-interesting also that Gov.Ry's caucus speech includes an offensive attack on RP, indicating a weakness with the former's political positions

Great example of why the straw poll is meaningless

The straw poll is a nonbinding beauty contest in Nevada right? That is awesome that you got ~57% of the delegates for Ron Paul even though only ~31.6% of the votes in the straw vote.

Thank you for your activism

Thank you for your activism and for reporting back from the trenches.

At a very small straw poll I attended in my area last week, I asked the following question of all candidate "representatives."

"Ron Paul gets more than twice as many donations to his campaign than all other candidates combined, including Obama. What message to you think the troops are trying to send America?"

The Ron Paul representative gave a good answer, the Santorum representative said maybe they don't like the way things are going and think Ron Paul may have some good ideas. The Gingrich and Romney representatives declined to answer / didn't have an answer.

Thank you

Other 3

Just curious, but were the other 3 all for Romney or was it split?

Great job by the way and thanks for sharing!

Best,

hmmm.....

I'm pretty sure it was 4 Ron Paul and 3 Romney, but I'm definite on the 4 delegates for Ron Paul!

Make SURE the 4 Paul

Make SURE the 4 Paul delegates SHOW UP! And don't bother reminding or encouraging the other 3 to go!
