NYTimes: Morning Workers & Ron Paul Voters Who Went To Adelson Caucus Denied Entry For Not Signing Religious Declaration
Submitted by AnAppealToHeavenWash on Sun, 02/05/2012 - 03:55NEW YORK TIMES: Anger at Night Caucus Over a Religious Declaration
By RICHARD A. OPPEL JR.
LAS VEGAS — A special Saturday night Republican caucus intended to accommodate orthodox Jews who couldn’t vote until after sundown became the scene of controversy and confrontation after caucusgoers were told that to gain admittance they had to sign a legal declaration under penalty of perjury that they could not attend their daytime caucus because of “my religious beliefs.”
Some officials from Mr. Paul’s campaign suggested that what they described as the “religious test” administered at the caucus would lead to lawsuits.
The use of the declaration brought protests from many supporters of Representative Ron Paul of Texas who arrived at the polling place — a school in an upscale neighborhood here named after its benefactors, the casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson and his wife, Miriam — after they got an automated phone message from the Paul campaign saying people who couldn’t vote at the regular caucuses could do so at the night meeting.
Some Paul officials suggested that what they described as the “religious test” administered at the caucus would lead to lawsuits, and they said that anyone who missed the earlier caucuses for any reason should have been allowed to vote.
Paul supporters packed the caucus and won handily: According to local party officials Mr. Paul received 183 votes; Mitt Romney, 61 votes; Newt Gingrich, 57 votes; and Rick Santorum, 16 votes.

Those people turned away
Those people turned away should sue the NVGOP.
I'm CONFUSED! Were those RP Supporters Jews or SDA's?
This is what I have been saying since Mr. Newt-Jew started this "special religious caucus" crap to begin with. It is ILLEGAL to have a "religious test" just like it is illegal to have a literacy test!
So, my question is simple: Did the Ron Paul supporters who DID get in and vote actually lie and sign the "religious declaration?" Or did they legitimately argue that such a declaration is ILLEGAL, and therefore they were allowed in anyway?
This is a serious issue! Personally, I could never sign that kind of declaration, EVER, even if it was the only way I could vote for Paul. That being said, this WAS well known in advance, so I would have found a First Amendment LAWYER and brought him / her to the caucus site to defend ALL the non-Jews who were DENIED ACCESS TO THE EARLIER CAUCUSES for ANY reason (such as being at work). If a lawyer was there this "religious test" NEVER would have been administered!
So, I'm really confused! I saw some of the coverage on CNN, and non of the people there even remotely looked like Orthodox Jews, since they were all really casually dressed and all the Orthodox Jews I've ever seen (in NY, NJ) are ALWAYS in suits and skirts and modest clothing. So, I really just want to know what actually HAPPENED! I know Ron Paul officially won, but if a ton of Ron Paul supporters (or anyone else, for that matter), WERE DENIED ENTRANCE because they refused to LIE about their religious beliefs, then that is just wrong! Plus, we've been CHEATED out of SO MANY VOTES from the other caucus sites that were NOT recorded on video, that all those Ron Paul votes that were excluded could have made a serious difference in the results overall.
Welcome to Nevada: Home of the The Fourth Reich!
I may be a vegetarian, but I'll defend to the death my right to eat meat!
The Ron Paul Supporters Who Voted Did So By Signing That
piece of paper saying they were voting their because of their "faith".
The GOP KNEW they could not LEGALLY require a particular "faith" as a condition of voting, so all they could do is say that it's on the honor system.
One Paul supporter (Stephen Melancon)refused to go along with this--it would be nice to hear what he has to say about the whole thing.

As far as the RP supporters that were turned away, I don't know what the circumstances were-- they may have also refused to sign the paper.
What was futher and greater
What was futher and greater voter supression in my opinon is the state GOP purposefully removed caucuses at the Las Vegas strip for casino and service workers who would have been able to work in the am and still vote ...hundreds if not a thousand votes dominated by young people and hispanics ...our strong demographics in NV.
Furthermore, who in the hell with the NV GOP decided to have 99% of the caucuses at 9AM??? WTF? Who decided this garbage and when? Those two things alone I would estimate cut our vote total by 25%.
They wanted the 55+ vote
They wanted the 55+ vote because most are brainwashed by the media! They know that 75% of them will vote for Romney. All the younger people were working hard into the late Vegas Sat night! Just think about it

Yeah great idea, let's force Jewish people to sign legal documents attesting to our ethnicity. What's next, gold stars on the lapel?
Such actions by any government are an act of war against the Jewish people.
We will never let it happen again!

This entire episode is only a distraction from the critical
issue of the complete Clark County count. The Media is using it as a distraction.
The vote totals involved w/ the special caucus-317
Yet to be counted/announced Clark County-Likely 20,000+ votes.

Potty Issue Lady
should say, 'It is against my religious beliefs to leave to vote when my child wants to go potty. So I did not vote in the morning.'
Good thing it didn't ask if they were white, black or chinese.

What a riot! I would have claimed to be Chinese.
DNA tests for voting is unconstitutional so they would have no proof I wasn't. And if it would help to be Jewish Seventh Day Adventist Chinese, I could be that, too.

It would be nice to see this contract they were supposed
to sign to vote in the caucus, anyone got a copy of it? surely someone at least took a picture of it with a cell phone.
Edit: I guess they show the partial contract in the news article, but would be nice to see a good copy.
According to the vague
According to the vague wording of this intimidating affidavit (which I think would be generally considered illegal anyway) one could rationalize that one's "religious beliefs" could include include atheism, since it is a belief that refutes religion. Anyway, it's good to see the pro-Ron camp cleaning up at this phony pony show.

It's unenforceable. Glad to see the Ron Paul people went in and dominated on national TV.
