Is the US Constitution simply a rough sketch or the DNA of our nation?
Submitted by BruceWI on Wed, 02/08/2012 - 12:43Let us not forget to point out to those who would vote for Santorum, Gingrich, Romney, Obama or Richardson
that our elected officials swore an oath of office to the US Constitution. The same oath that vets like me would gladly lay our lives down for. This is my first point about Mr. Paul. He is the only candidate who chose to serve in the military. How can anyone who did not choose to serve-to see first-hand that the decisions made in Washington directly affect the life and death of others serving-be qualified to send others into harm's way?
In the case of the US president this oath is "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." Sounds to me like the oath we expect our leaders and authorities to take is saying the Constitution, and therefore liberty is job one and the most important factor. Yet Gingrich and Romney publicly said they would still sign the 2012 NDAA into law knowing it contained sections 1021 and 1022 (indefinite detention of US citizens without legal recourse). This is not limited to being directly involved with any particular terrorist group. Rather, one of the reasons such a law can be acted on is for being belligerent. When I hear terms like belligerent, the right to protest as well as the first amendment comes to mind here. I'm sure we all can understand that documents at this level are 100% legalese and as such loop-holes are the sough-after prize. Mr Santorum said he felt the law was fine the way it was. As he voted to re-authorize the "Patriot" act and by his comments he is saying that acts such as this are ok. Yet, both the "Patriot" act and various sections of the 2012 NDAA clearly violate the US Constitution and therefore all candidates, be they Democrat or Republican, have or are willing to defend or promote further erosion on the very document they are sworn to defend...all except one. That is Mr. Ron Paul. While the other candidates continue to re-state their meaningless campaign speeches, they do nothing to promote liberty or the American way. Mr. Paul is actively doing his job-introducing legislation to repeal such un-Constitutional and un-American laws and acts such as the "Patriot" Act and the sections 1021/1022 of the 2012 NDAA as well as SOPA.
I do not want to leave the national debt to my children. I believe actually cutting our deficit by $1trillion the first year rather than simply slowing the growth of the debt over the course of the next 10 years is the best course of action. My dad gave me some advice when I was a teen. He said, "just because there are checks left in your checkbook does not mean you still have money to spend". Our government seems to have either never heard or forgotten this simple principal. This issue may take many years to resolve and while I'd hate to give this debt to the next generation I believe our liberty is the absolute key in making the rest of the changes possible. As such, I absolutely refuse to leave my country in a less free place as I enjoyed growing up. I hope you either feel as I do now or will if you take the time to research what I've pointed out here.
