Can someone explain this election process
Submitted by John23 on Wed, 02/08/2012 - 13:07How do the primaries work? How are delegates assigned etc.? Has anything been binding so far as far as the delegates go (have they actually been awarded to anyone)?

This is a big question.
The process to become a delegate can be confusing because there are 50 states with different bylaws.
I have only been a delegate in caucus states so I will speak to that.
First step is to register as Republican. Even if you are a state where dems and indys can vote. People volunteer or are nominated to become delegates at your local precinct caucus. Get your friends and neighbors to support you as a delegate or to become delegates as well. Prepare just a small free market, constitution and limited government speech. You do not need to commit yourself to a candidate at that time so if you are afraid of losing votes for being a RP supporter you may want to run on your own merits and enthusiasm.
If you get enough votes you become a delegate or alt delegate. Alt delegates are frequently approved to state conventions at the county convention. Get in touch with other local RP supporters that became delegates so you can plan voting strategies at the county convention.
