Jack Hunter: Straw Polls vs. Collecting Delegates
Submitted by legalizeliberty on Wed, 02/08/2012 - 20:13Last night was a good night for Ron Paul. But it was a better night than many might realize.
The desire to accumulate as many delegates as possible has long been the campaign’s primary focus. After all, this is how one becomes the nominee. But collecting delegates is not the same thing as winning the straw polls, which obviously make the headlines.
Ron Paul 2012 campaign chairman John Tate explains:
“We are thrilled with the yesterday’s results. Our campaign to Restore America continues to gain ground, and we are poised to pick up even more delegates from Minnesota and Colorado adding to our delegates in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada.
“As people across the country view the results of yesterday’s contests, it is important to consider a few facts that have not been clearly reported. Not one single delegate was awarded yesterday, instead the caucuses in Minnesota and Colorado were the very first step in the delegate selection process. And there are still over 40 states left to go. The Ron Paul campaign plans to continue to vie for delegates nationwide.”
Indeed. Below is a pie chart created by a supporter that shows how Paul’s straw poll performance measures against collecting delegates in particular Colorado precincts. You will notice in each example, the delegates selected exceed the straw poll results. To say the least...

Stick it to the MSM
All these caucuses Ron Paul is losing and MSM gives delegate count to other candidates is just a mirage. If all delegates will bind them selves to Ron Paul as soon as possible it would change things drastically before the end of the primaries. I figure Ron Paul could easily have 140 delegates already, double Mitt Romney's. People could see that the MSM was lying all along and Ron Paul could actually win. And by that time in May it should be down to Romney and Paul with Ron Paul having close to 600 delegate at that time.
When I seen this it made me excited about Paul winning nomination out right.

The graphic has a lot more
The graphic has a lot more impact than just seeing the numbers.
Weren't these "unassigned" delegates prior to the caucus, & also
once "assigned" doesn't mean we get them at the State level, right? Or does that vary from state to state? I'm thinking it does.
A sigh of relief
Things like this makes me sleep better at nights, because it is all going to be worth it at the end of the day!

why does delegates vary so much??
seems like different websites vary ALOT! i just read one the said Ron Paul has only 9.
Shhhh
Look, I think we all understand this strategy and how amazingly successful it is, but the less people know about it the better. I can understand how the campaign wants the media and its supporters to know that we are doing way better then the polls have shown - this will lead to momentum, fundraising, etc. But my fear is that the other candidates will wake up to this strategy and begin to match us delegate for delegate and we will have lost a massive advantage. I guess its a strategic decision, but I come down on the side of being quiet.

It Takes A Strong Campaign Organization to Get Delegates
Also to mention a great grassroots movement to get people to become delegates. I haven't been to other campaign meetings to know if that what they tell their supporters to do. One thing is clear, is they are not pushing their supporters to become delegates for their county/state as strongly as Paul campaign. In even if they were, could enough of them be as motivated as Paul supporters to become delegates? Do they have a grass-roots organization to push their message like Paul supporters?
REVELATION Chapter 13
Agreed ....
.... It's very much a delicate balance.
Typical or cherry-picked three?
Are these three precincts cherry-picked because they were the only ones to accomplish this, or was this typical of all the precincts?

They are voted upon by people
@RedDot (sorry my reply posted to a different comment)
They are voted upon by people in the room.
The campaign has the numbers due to Paul supporters reporting the status of their particular event back to HQ.
My precinct only got 1 of 12 delegates for Paul. But we received 12 of 12 alternates. And in 2008, most all the alternates were seated at State.
Typical
Jack Hunter is the official blogger woring for the Ron Paul campaign he would not write a misleading article.

No
Nothing he said indicates it's typical. He was making a point.
I don't think it would be a good idea to reveal all the actuals they may know about. We want to stay encouraged, while still executing this sneak-attack on the other campaigns.

How does delegate collection
How does delegate collection work? And how does the person who made the charts know the exact number?
This is very confusing.

Here's What Happens
Going to a convention to be a delegate requires travel and expense. Usually there is a fee to participate. They use it to defray the cost (parties are membership organizations and must raise money).
Each region from local to national is awarded a certain number of delegates. I don't know how it is in the GOP, but usually in the LP there are more delegate slots than delegates, and what typically happens is, that my local county wants to send as many delegates from our county as they can, in order to have the county represented.
This is more important to them than which candidate that delegate represents. Same at the state level. No one knows which candidates will still be running when the national convention happens, but they want their local or state organization to be represented (plenty of other business is conducted).
The person who made the charts was relying on a report from someone who was there who knew the delegates were RP supporters. These are assumptions in a way, because they haven't voted, yet, at the next level (where more delegates get selected). The local Ron Paul delegates get to vote who will be a state delegate, and the state delegates vote who goes to national. The more Ron Paul supporters who are in the pipeline and willing to go to the next convention, the better.

Thank you for the
Thank you for the explanation. The key I was missing was:
I could not understand how we "got" delegates. That sounds like they are bound to Ron Paul. This clears things up greatly.
