RONVERTS: Breaking Up with Obama, Rebounding with Ron Paul
Submitted by scottfreedom2012 on Thu, 02/09/2012 - 10:38This is good, and something we have been aware of for a while and why Paul is the one to beat Obama!
GOOD.is - February 9, 2012
In 2008, Moses Caballeros was a 21-year-old activist in New York City who couldn’t wait to cast his first presidential vote for Barack Obama. He canvassed around Harlem, he proselytized to his friends, he attended rallies and meetings downtown. Coming from a family of hardcore Puerto Rican and Brazilian-American Democrats that voted for Charlie Rangel every election cycle, he “really couldn’t give a fuck about a Republican.” He was happy that Obama planned to get our troops out of Iraq. He liked the sound of making government more transparent.
“I really loved the idea of finally becoming part of the political process,” he says. “Like it mattered what I thought about government issues.” The fact that Obama was biracial topped it off. For his Harlem neighbors and family members, having a president of color “was monumental,” Moses says. “It felt important for us to back him. I thought he would support us.”
Fast-forward to 2012. The best way Caballeros can describe the way he feels is “heartbroken.” Betrayed and lied to. “I haven’t felt this pain about any other politician,” he says. He began to lose his faith in Obama when the president waffled on the wars, after he reaffirmed the PATRIOT Act, and especially when he signed the National Defense Authorization Act back in December. “He conformed to what the puppets on Capitol Hill wanted him to be,” Caballeros says, with disgust. “He didn’t care about his constituents.”

This is Alfredo in Milwaukee....
Too bad you beat me posting this up...I was at the dentist today and layed up in bed for the rest of the day...I actually came across the author on twitter and I called her and she interviewed me about a week later...doing a lot of good work for the good doctor in Milwaukee...

Excellent article,
except the three short paragraphs where the author quotes Dave Weigel, a political reporter for Slate. He busted out the Isolationism slander again. Other than that a very moving article. I don't blame the author for asking and including Dave Weigel's bias opinion. It conveys a sense of objective journalism. Nona Willis Aronowitz, Associate Editor, did a very professional job with this article. IMHO.

Game Changer
Its been a long time since a game changer like Ron Paul came around.
What do you do with this guy?! He doesn't fit the current party system. He's changing it up!

Good read
this is one of the best
this is one of the best pro-r3volution I've read in a long long time! Very uplifting!
Liberty or Death
Hello from New York!
This may be a little premature but I am a pharmacy student at the University at Buffalo in New York who is greatly anticipating the Republican Primaries in New York. I frequent the DailyPaul forum (at least an hour or two a day), listen to his speeches and news appearances while driving in my car (with the Ron Paul bumper sticker of course) and am currently reading 'Liberty Defined'. I guess you can say I'm obsessed with the liberty message. I realize that this is still a long ways away (April 24th) but New York does have 95 delegates at stake so I would say it is never too early to get started. I have been doing some independent work by recruiting many friends to the Republican party in order to vote for Dr. Paul. I would say that I've converted at least ten friends and family to the party in order to vote for Dr. Paul. I have hung posters up around the University at Buffalo campus in order to get his name and message out there. Despite these things, I feel as though I have not done enough. My question is: How would I go about getting in touch with the Paul campaign and having him speak at the University at Buffalo? It is the largest of the SUNY schools with nearly 50,000 students and I feel as though this a great demographic to be going after. New York is a liberal state and Ron Paul's anti-war, pro-civil liberty and anti-crony capitalism message should appeal to a great number of youthful voters. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated!
No One But Paul 2012!
Anyone here in touch with the Campaign
who could answer Pharmacist's question? And it's not at all premature, it is time to get this rolling on as many campuses as possible.
Is this the tipping point? Must read
the article linked to the post together with the comments. Great stuff!
If that doesn't bring a smile, then click on the "bad lip reading" video on that link. Clever!
Thanks for posting, Scott.
I read email after email from
I read email after email from people who admitted to becoming “obsessed” or “addicted” to watching Ron Paul YouTube videos after feeling disappointed with Obama. One guy told me that he was “consumed” with listening to Paul speeches in his car and had started secretly reading libertarian literature at work.
Consumed? Secretly?
Wow.
Some time, Rock, when the team is up against it, when things are wrong and the breaks are beating the boys, ask them to go in there with all they've got and win just one for the Gipper.
LOL
that's ME! Except for the "secret" part: never have I ever pumped up the volume when listening to audio books, until I came across Dr. Paul's.
I do it in the bedroom, shower, backyard, in the car, hell, I practically have RP's speeches playing 24/7 like background music!
Er... that just sounded like a line from "I'm F'ng Matt Damon" - Silverman parody! Ah... sorry Doc for the awkward Pop image mashup.
Oh yeah, I'm consumed by it, and I consume it voraciously!
Like a 'Daily RP Noggin Muchies' .o)

It's a liberal thing, I
It's a liberal thing, I guess.
It's alright, they just need a little time and understanding ;-)
The people in this article sound like me!
I was just like the people mentioned in this article. I never was involved in politics much before. In 2008 I would have voted for Obama but didn't because I was off in college and didn't know about things like absentee ballots. I literally learned about Ron Paul a couple weeks ago and now I'm happy that my first vote in anything politics will be for Ron Paul this June in the California primary. But I remember being just like the people described in this article: staying up at night watching Ron Paul videos, reading his books, and going to forums and websites like dailypaul to interact with other Paul supporters. Ron Paul and his supporters have improved my understanding of politics and issues like the federal reserve, foreign policy, and the Constitution. I'm happy to be better informed and never thought in a million years that I could develop a taste for politics. Not only have a developed a taste, but I've fallen in love with the recipe that Ron Paul has given us. His recipe is simple, is based on the Founding Fathers' ideals, and it will help America get back to that great and awesome country she once was.

Another Ronvert Here
I enthusiastically voted Obama in 08, shared many passionate conversations about the campaign, and made donations. It wasn't until the time of the bailouts, that I began questioning Obama's commitment to change, and then when he signed NDAA on New Years Eve, I was convinced that he was just another run-of-the-mill politician serving lobbied interests. There are maybe over half a dozen things that I've been disappointed by throughout his presidency, and it wasn't until several stories on the Daily Show about Ron Paul, that I went over to YouTube and watched a Paul speech. I was surprised to find a Republican speaking about issues with a perspective so close to my own. That spiraled into a quest to find out more about Paul, and now I'm convinced that he is the right choice for President. Both parties have too many status-quo politicians, who show more difference in style than in substance. We need a candidate with principles, a history of consistent principles, and I believe Ron Paul's principles are sound. He's right on foreign policy, that's for sure. He's right on decreasing the power & influence of the federal government, and returning more control to the state. He's right on our country's broken monetary system. He's right on the critical issues.
If moderates want anyone but Obama, fiscal-conservatives want Paul, libertarians want Paul, independents want Paul, and disenchanted-democrats want Paul; Ron Paul is the best choice to beat the incumbent.
Wow!
This is, hands down, the best single article that can be used as an effective recruiting tool for disenfranchised dems! Hit at home because I'm a former Democrat turned Ron Paul supporter back in late 06. So many of the things we cannot think to say or express are made very articulate in this article. Fair, balanced, the truth, it's so refreshing.

It was especially exciting...
It was especially exciting when I heard him speak on foreign policy, and speak against the Patriot Acts, and NDAA... and then see the ENTHUSIASM other folks have about this message!!!
