It just Kills me

How the media thinks we don't know a thing about Ron Paul. I bet that Ron Paul supporters could articulate all of his positions ten times better than any other candidate's PAID staff. We aren't ignorant.

I personally, do not get as excited as many others about illegal immigration. I see it as market forces at work, and labor, like any other commodity, will transcend borders. But I know how important it is to many voters, and I think Dr. Paul's is the most sensible approach. A fence will not stop illegal immigration. But a federal mandate that forces hospitals to provide care to illegals so that they can skirt the law and drop an anchor baby? That is just crazy! Nobody knows better than Dr. Paul what it's like to be an OB-GYN in Texas and see the tremendous burden that is shutting down these hospitals. Where is our sovereignty when a hospital is forced to provide care to a woman in labor that is willing to risk everything to have an anchor baby because she knows she can't be turned away? Once the welfare state is fixed and the government gets out of the way, I think immigration will normalize and be beneficial to all. In the meantime, the pressure needs to be let off those hurting the most from these insane policies.

And Absolute Kudos to Dr. Paul for having the respect to go the constitutional route, unlike so many others.

Change the Constitution? Yes... In a constitutional way!

It's called the amendment process. Ever hear of it? That's how we got the 14th Amendment in the first place! It was added to ensure that the freed slaves were guaranteed citizenship status. Now illegal immigrants use that loophole to gain citizenship for their children, and citizenship for themselves through that. Dr. Paul wants to amend the Constitution further in order to ensure that citizenship status is not given to the child of an illegal immigrant who crawls across our borders and gives birth here. And before anybody starts to throw racist comments at me, I'm all for immigration -- LEGAL immigration! Historically our immigrants have been the backbone of our country (and yes, I know... historically we've had illegals from other countries too, but that still doesn't make it right). Get in line, emigrate here lawfully, and I for one will welcome you with open arms. I work alongside two guys who are LEGAL immigrants (from Honduras), and I can tell you that they both resent those who illegally enter this country.

His ad didn't upset me

The way I read the 14th amendment, illegal aliens' babies shouldn't receive automatic citizenship. Unless you consider illegal aliens to be under the jurisdiction of the United States government, which no one should as they are citizens of another country.

1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it was some judge somewhere that ruled that this amendment applied to babies born of illegal aliens residing in our country.

At ronpaullibrary.org, Ron Paul states in several of his writings that illegal aliens' babies should not be granted birthright citizenship. He hasn't hidden it from anyone.

The only libertarians who are "irked" by this

Are the communo-libertarians like Noam Chomsky, because they, just like the neo-cons, want a one world socialist order--just a slightly different version.

Noam Chomsky is NOT a Libertarian

Noam Chomsky, with whom my husband occasionally communicates, is not a Libertarian. He is a neo-liberal who is more loyal to Israel to the US. I say this because he is totally opposed to ending US funding of Israel's existence. He refused to support the local movement to stop sending Somerville, MA city pension funds to Israel (instead of investing in local businesses). He actually not only believes that Americans should be forced to pay taxes to Israel without their consent but he's opposed to us being allowed to vote on the issue.

I read this story and it

needs to focus on the fact that the original intent of the 14th Amendment, stated in the congressional record for all to read, was *never* to grant birthright citizenship to children of illegal immigrants born on U.S. soil.

This is *not* a change to the correct operation of the 14th Amendment; only an enforcement of the original intent of the framers of the 14th Amendment. It is an attempt to overturn the activist re-interpretation of the 14th Amendment engaged in by the U.S. Supreme Court, expanded and continually liberalized, since the 1898 decision of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Libertarian opposition to this is misplaced.

Paul actually doesn't

Paul actually doesn't believe that the 14th amendment has been correctly interpreted so he has legislation that would address make it illegal to for birthright citizenship, but just in case he has also provided a constitutional amendment as well.
