When adapted as a play, "Wizard of Oz" was far more political than the original story, it contained jokes about the Rockefellers, Standard Oil, and politicians of the day.

Interesting side note, the producer of that Secret of Oz documentary, Bill Still, is running for the Libertarian nomination. Unfortunately, he is a "greenbacker" his idea is to replace the Fed by giving Congress the power to print more fiat money.

whether or not Baum really meant for the story to be depicted this way who knows(it makes sense though) but it's a great documentary regardless.

Why is it that people must swallow every conspiracy theory set forth? What is wrong with countering those with another point of view? Why do conspiracy theories get priority here?

Allegory in literature is not a "conspiracy theory"

To quote Inigo Montoya, from The Princess Bride:

"(people) keep using that word, but I don't think they know what it means..."

Symbolism is often the royal road to the unconscious, as Sigmund Freud pointed out. Even if Frank Baum didn't craft his symbolism intentionally, which seems to be your point, the symbolism stands.

Uh, yeah. I understand allegory, thanks. And obviously I was using conspiracy theory in a rather loose way. What is the point in splitting hairs?

This thread and linked article explicitly state that it was the clear intention of Baum to write this story as such an allegory. My comment was to refute this.

If people want to use it for it's symbolism, then that's fine. What is wrong with pointing out that this was not the intention of the author? It's sacrilege around here not to swallow everything unsubstantiated claim hook-line-and-sinker, huh?

I thought libertarians were more predisposed to reason.

I find nothing wrong with pointing that out. Baum may or may not have intentionally used these symbols. And you are correct, he never admitted to it -- but he may have had other reasons not to make his intentions public. Bottom line is, we just don't know for sure. And I take no issue at all with your point.

However, I am generally annoyed with people who are much too quick to quip "conspiracy theory" as some kind of Pavlovian response triggered specifically, either consciously or unwittingly, to disarm critical thinking and render the programed to a hypnotic trance of cognitive dissonance...it's maddening. My apologies for the rant. You've explained yourself in this regard so I don't think that applies to you.

This used to be a place where you could throw out an idea and get feedback...not a thought controller who wants to ONLY talk about what HE wants to talk about...I don't think you are a real supporter..I think you are someone paid to infiltrate and keep certain subjects from coming up...

What is wrong with questioning the validity of these conspiracies? You say that I should "move along..." but that pretty much means that if I don't agree with a topic, I shouldn't have my voice heard. There is something called confirmation bias. Often people see what they want to see. I do not see anything wrong with calling that out for what it is.

That's funny. How did I do that, exactly? Can you point me to some comment of mine that you think might have somehow caused that to happen? I don't know who any of the moderators are. For all I know, I could be booted in next few minutes.

And if you stop to think about it. If I was the real problem here, why was I not the one booted?

I am a strong believer in liberty and the message of Dr. Paul. I'm particularly interested in helping his campaign right now. This is an opinion website. It is my opinion that discussing chemtrails and the like is distracting and hurting Ron Paul's credibility. Thousands of non-members visit this site every day. If they are going to see threads about chemtrails, I'd prefer they at least see some dissenting views. I'm sorry if that makes you uncomfortable.
