Check out my rocket stove
Submitted by MikeLawson on Tue, 02/14/2012 - 01:09I have been experimenting with rocket stoves for the last year or so. In the course of learning more about the stoves, I came across this instructional video series on how to build an "Institutional Barrel Stove" http://www.aprovecho.org/web-content/media/inst_stove/p1.htm and thought I'd try to tackle it. Well, it took a few days of hard work and a lot of asking around for the materials and certain tools to get it done, but here's my finished stove, http://www.youtube.com/user/PureEarthFarms?feature=mhee
It works better than my stove in the kitchen. It brought a big pot of ice cold sap to a boil in 10 minutes flat and kept a steady rolling boil for over 3 hours--which in itself is super-fast for maple syrup boiling. I burned a total of maybe 2.5 little chunks of an oak 2x8 about a foot long each and cut into 1 inch thick strips that I fed into the stove. I am now thinking of how I can build an oven for the top and already getting the supplies together to make it into the steam generator for my wood bending steamer. This thing's gonna have 1001 uses around the old homestead. Please enjoy it and comment.

I just spent the past 2 hours
Researching stoves.
Thanks mike. I learned a lot.

No problem!
Hey, if you can do me a huge favor. I have no clue how to sign on youtube and retrieving a password is no easy ordeal with them.
I noticed a guy commented on one of my videos asking how long it took to make syrup. Can you (or anyone who sees this) please tell him that my father and I processed 12 gallons of sap to syrup in about 5 hours and the pot STAYS cranking as long as you keep adding wood. In fact, we're going to make several more this year and, God willing, process 1000 gallons of sap this year. Thank you to whoever passes that on.

Ever looked into rocket mass heaters?
A similar device that can be used to heat a room instead of cook is the rocket mass heater: http://www.richsoil.com/rocket-stove-mass-heater.jsp
Very nice but...
Very nice, but what does it have to do with Ron Paul or politics? I have a very nice solar heater that I just completed but this is not the place to display it.
RickStone
Yes it is is Rick Stone
This is a community, not an election committee. I want to see the solar heater.

It
has nothing to do with Ron Paul or politics. That is why it is in the "off grid" category. Sometimes a little break is nice, no?

Bump at a reasonable time
I LOVE this thing! It's the coolest rocket stove I've ever built. Please enjoy it and leave a comment.

Why the barrel instead of bricks? Is the barrel filled with gravel?
I can almost smell that maple syrup cooking. We're going to have to work out a trade or something for a bottle of that.
I want to try some "Lawson's Own" Maple syrup....;)
Hope all is well with you and baby Faith.
Since you're geting into the Greek culture, have you seen this "Mr.Panos" character? He's kind of funny because he reminds me of some family growing up.

Thanks, Mike.
Yeah, I'd love to have seen the construction video. Maybe the next one...
New Hampshire and Ecuador.
Maybe the next one
I do regret not at least taking some pictures. The steamer attachment works like a charm too!!
