Dateline Valentine's Day, 1842: What's New?

The following is a quote from english novelist Charles Dickens. Dickens is talking about America after a visit in 1842. Fittingly enough, I receivd this email from a current visitor to our fair shores:

"I am disappointed," Dickens wrote in a famous letter. "This is not the republic of my imagination, it is the home of: Despicable trickery at elections; under-handed tamperings with public officers; and cowardly attacks upon opponents, with scurrilous newspapers for shields, and hired pens for daggers".

Ron Paul and the R3volution is not only an idea whose time has come, it is past due! This bit of literary history is quite a read. Dickens was greeted here as a rockstar. On Valentine's Day, 1842, New York hosted one of the grandest events the city had ever seen - a ball in honoring Dickens.
The visit which had started with balls and fanfare, quickly turned into a bitter dispute, known as the "Quarrel with America". So, what's new?
