A thought or two

i really hate google and am glad to see people talking about what they are doing and suggesting other SE. but does anybody have some info on an ISP that isnt owned by google or answer to them? i use to think firefox was good but of course google pulls all their strings. also what is a good email provider that wont profile you like gmail does?

I dont use start page

because I can't figure out a way to get it to remember my searches so i don't have to keep retyping them

I like DuckDuckGo.com

Here's a rundown of their privacy: https://duckduckgo.com/privacy.html

I tried it

but it does the same thing... it doesn't remember my search terms ... I even checked "settings" https://duckduckgo.com/settings.html and there's no tab or box to check to enable this function. Right now, thanks to the suggestion of another poster, I'm using gibiru.com... it remembers my search terms... so far I like it.

The best way to protect

The best way to protect yourself from tracking is:
1. Change your PC name every once in awhile
2. Opt out of both Microsoft and Google tracking
3. Change your MAC address (They can tell your individual PC by its MAC address.)
4. Use Startpage - It takes some getting used to but uses GOOGLE search engine in its search algorithm. Most sites including GOOGLE have paid advertising as the first links that appear at the top of the page.
5. Use encrypted email

Hope this helps. When using StartPage goto the settings and select/de-select the filter options that are on by default. Also in response to SSL/TLS being easy to hack, I would not call it easy, however, only TLS version 1.0 has been successfully hacked.

Here is the browser breakdown:
The TLS support for browsers right now is:
IE9 TLS 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 all supported via Schannel
IE8 TLS 1.0 supported by default, 1.1 and 1.2 can be configured
Opera - 10.x supports TLS 1.0, 1.1, 1.2
I don't count older versions of any of these browsers, since people really should have auto-update on. if they don't they've probably got bigger problems ( http://isc.sans.edu/diary.html?storyid=11527 )
Mozilla/ Firefox - TLS 1.0 only (vote here to get this fixed ==> https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=480514 )
Chrome - TLS 1.0 only (though an update is rumoured)
Safari - TLS 1.0

Google

It would be so interesting to see a majority shift away from Google to another SE. With the spread of the SOPA bill, it isn't unthinkable. I could easily see a bunch of BOYCOTT GOOGLE memes propagate across tumblr, facebook, etc. Wow think about that, GOOG investors!

My sites rank better in Bing so I am biased lol

I'm definately not impressed......

after testing it out. Searching "Ron Paul" turned up nothing but democrat "hit pieces" for the first several pages. Also much more difficult to narrow or drill down into. I think it needs more refining before I would call it a competitor to the mainstream search engines.

RP search

When I search for RP both start page and gibiru SEs show at the top of the page a sponsored search add (in gibiru it's under Ads By Google) saying:

Ron Paul Extreme Ideas | democratichub.com
Discuss libertarians taking their ideology to the irrational extreme, Obama Accomplishments
www.democratichub.com

Below the sponsored search ad or Ads by Google everything else appears to be the same as google.

"Powerful SSL encryption"

SSL provides ZERO security against government snooping.

I want everyone here to know, that SSL is complete useless. Your browser has a list of hundreds of "trusted" certificate authorities, many of whom have delegated signing authority to many other affiliated entities. All can sign certificates for any domain name.

Not to say that search engine is bad, I just don't want anyone to have a false sense of security from SSL.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong

but if you want real privacy on the web, isn't it all about the IP address? You can search all day long and visit anyplace, as long as they don't know who and where you are.

Mostly correct, but...

"You can search all day long and visit anyplace, as long as they don't know who and where you are"

This means you have to exclude from the safe browsing originating locations:

1. your home (your ISP can disclose to the gov the dynamic IP addys they have allocated you in any given time frame);

2. your workplace, same reason

3. your regular free wifi public places where minimal intelligence could allow them to correlate your browsing habits with your identity

The "safest" is to browse from randomly chosen places with your geo location feature on ALL your devices turned OFF.

But no place is absolutely safe if they REALLY want to find out who you are and what you're digging into, once they have gathered initial intelligence about you. Remember they have satellites that TECHNICALLY CAN read a newspaper over your shoulder in clear sky/weather.

However, to mitigate a bit: it's probably silly to fall into hardcore paranoia, still, at this point ...

Such interests from the gov in someone should supposedly be backed up by you posing a REAL threat to national security, which I assume is unlikely to be the case for most if not all of us.

That said, it's NO EXCUSE to tolerate any step further in the direction of things such as SOPA / PIPA / ACTA.

Granted.

I think we have already determined

that what the government constitutes a threat, is quite the radical departure from what any real threat is actually composed of. I would wager that they are much more afraid of us, since they themselves are the genuine terrorists.

Correct

Your ISP and Mobile Phone company know more about you than all of the websites you visit combined. If you dont' think duckduck, startpage, bing, google, yahoo, facebook, amazon, yelp, linkedin, zynga, apple, firefox, microsoft, don't track you then you are naive. Each company tracks every incoming IP/cookie ID for all kinds of things.

I suggest everyone take a look at their ISP and Mobile Phone company to look at data retention and how often they turn over data to the US gov't.

You can use proxy servers to mask your IP address and clear your cookies (or block from accepting 3rd party), but there is always going to be an element of publicness to the internet (that's what it's all about).

I don't have a problem with Google...

Who says that they're more trustworthy than Google?

Google earned my trust back when all the other search engines (back in the day) were lining up & getting ready to charge big bucks for rank placement. If it weren't for Google, the internet would be a much different place.

Anyway, I'm not ready to trade freedom (and accuracy btw) for security. ~grin~

Haven't you read their new privacy policy that gets implemented on march 1st? It is all over their youtube, gmail and google pages.

I've Been Using Startpage.com For Almost A Year

Its great. Now with it using google results with the privacy it should be used. For searching for photos and video it does not compare to google but that's a sacrifice to make for privacy.

http://www.grc.com/intro.htm

I've been using startpage.com and its predecessor...

...ixquick.com for a LONG time. Works fine, NEVER any Google for me. Good to see that world-class privacy advocate Katherine Albrecht is associated with them now, too!!

Sometimes it is easy to see

Sometimes it is easy to see why Ron Paul has trouble gaining mainstream support and why most people see his supporters as naive children.

So...this site basically takes Google results and gives them to you on their own page?

And NO OdNE here thinks that they will get shut down REALLY FAST? And rightfully so?

Is ANYONE so stupid as to think it is OK for a site to plagiarize Google's algorithm...that cost Google BILLIONS to research and develop and tweak...and use it on their own site for free?

If you do, it is clear that you have already decided that you will NEVER produce anything worthwhile in this world so yuou have no problem, with people stealing your hard work.

LOTS of sites have tried this. Sure...since they spend NO money on their search engine, they can accept less in advertising to cover costs. But these sites always get sued (again, rightfully so) and close up shop within a few months.

By the way...no one is spying on you. Your lives are not important enough.

agree in part

all the stuff about using google and theft is legit. Disagree on the 'nobody is watching' thing. While FBI/CIA/NSA/DHS/DOS etc may not be watching *you* specifically when they get something interesting going through then they can turn the spot light onto you.

Also I think it incredibly naive to believe anything anyone says about 'we dont save anything!' 'completely anonymous!'

You'll only find out how they lied to you when it is too late.

Ixquick was the original name,

and still works, but they decided to make StartPage also, as it's easier to remember and promote. I've been using Ixquick and now Startpage for about 7 yrs. and have been very satisfied with searches. They now use Google search patterns through their proxy making their's equal to Google, while preventing Google's tracking system from recording searches.

That’s right folks!

Imagine, you could be searching all day long and no one would know! Why it’ll be our little secret here at startpage.com
