Is it really crazy?
Submitted by NoEndToTruth on Mon, 02/20/2012 - 10:48Every Ron Paul supporter has heard someone say that Ron Paul (or at least some of his ideas) are "crazy". Having learned the history and philosophy behind his ideas, we strongly beg to differ.
However, it doesn't seem to stop very many of us here as labeling other candidates or their positions or affiliations as "crazy", "ridiculous", "insane", etc. when there's something we don't like to be found.
Remember, many of us here probably though that at least one of Ron Paul's positions was at the very least "weird" upon first hearing about it. There's a certain framework of knowledge that has to be established in order to understand Dr. Paul's message, and until that framework is in place, it may seem crazy. That's not the fault of the message, nor directly the fault of the observer, it's just a consequence of judging something without the full context (as humans are prone to do).
And just as we hope others will "wake up" and see things as we see them now, I hope that we won't also assume that we know everything. Most of us here weren't born knowing this stuff and most of us simply didn't know what we didn't know. Similarly, there is still knowledge and understanding that each of us does not possess and you never know when a new framework of understanding will take hold and add a new layer of understanding to your worldview.
This is why it pains me to see attacks from some Paul supporters, not on ideas, but on religions (with an emphasis on Mormons an Evangelicals for obvious, politically-motivated reasons). There may be beliefs or practices of those sects (or any other religions or belief system) that seems "crazy" to you on first inspection. You must remember that similar to the "framework" that is necessary to appreciate Dr. Paul's positions, a different framework is necessary to understand theological positions and practices. Just because something seems crazy to you doesn't automatically mean it's wrong (another great example of this for science nerds is quantum physics). We of all people should appreciate that, and sympathize with others who are treated that way instead of being their persecutors.
I am LDS(Mormon) and it may come as a surprise to some here that I find it offensive when people try to attack Mitt Romney by attacking my church (it's only some, others are very respectful). You don't have to take the time to learn the whole "framework" to understand the Mormon church if you don't want to, that's not the point of my post. My point is to remind you that there is a framework wherein the things you think are "crazy" or "ridiculous" on the surface do make sense. If you want to bring people to the message of liberty instead of driving them away, please try to keep that in mind while preaching liberty.
