Fort Smith area residents will be among the first in the nation to see C-SPAN’s new Campaign 2008 Bus as part of the “Road to the White House” tour when the bus stops at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith from 9 a.m. until noon on Sept. 26.

The 45-foot mobile production studio is on the campaign trail to promote and enhance C-SPAN’s comprehensive political coverage, traveling to major political events such as candidate debates and speeches in early primary states, touring state capitols, and conducting educational programs for teachers and students.

The Campaign 2008 Bus will be located in the circle drive at the east entrance of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center and will be available for visitors to see interactive demonstrations about C-SPAN programming, media literacy skills and the 2008 presidential cycle. Those interested in viewing the bus need to sign a tour schedule at the Box Office, located just inside the east entrance of the campus center.

The Fort Smith event, in partnership with Cox Communications and UA Fort Smith, is part of the bus’s inaugural “Road to the White House” tour, named after C-SPAN’s renowned political program that marks its 20th year on the air in 2008.

“This is such a unique opportunity for the public to be able to see first-hand how C-SPAN brings coverage of the political process to cable viewers,” said Kimberly Edmunds, regional vice president of Cox Communications Kansas/Arkansas. “The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith is a perfect place to illustrate to area students the educational value of C-SPAN through the current campaign for the Presidency.”

Stacey Jones, associate vice chancellor for campus and community events at UA Fort Smith, “We are excited to partner with Cox to bring our students and the community this unique educational experience. This will help to bring Campaign 2008 home to everyone in our region.”

Rebecca Stewart, marketing representative with C-SPAN Networks, said that early interest in presidential politics is growing.

“We’re excited to get on the road now with the brand new Campaign 2008 Bus,” Stewart said. “As the political network of record, we’re excited to offer a variety of resources for educators, students, first-time voters and the general public as part of our extensive coverage of the 2008 presidential elections.”

A revamped version of the network’s award-winning School Bus, the Campaign 2008 bus sports a new exterior design wrap in election themes along with interior modifications that include the latest television production equipment.

C-SPAN Classroom, www.c-spanclassroom.org, a free membership service for middle and high school teachers, offers a selection of free, downloadable video clips picked from the network’s extensive political programming. These include “Road to the White House,” that are updated weekly, and “classroom-ready,” allowing teachers to readily incorporate a study of presidential politics into their curriculum.

C-SPAN’s political coverage is available on the C-SPAN networks, C-SPAN Radio, www.c-span.org, or the one-stop 2008 election Web site, www.CampaignNetwork.org.

In the Fort Smith area, C-SPAN can be seen on Cox channel 26 and C-SPAN 2 on channel 60.
