Ron Paul: ‘Hemp is a good product’
Submitted by legalizeliberty on Tue, 02/21/2012 - 08:00Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul drew cheers from supporters in North Dakota Monday while making a pitch for free market economics to be applied to farmers, allowing them to grow alternative crops such as hemp.
“There is no reason, in a free society, that farmers shouldn’t be allowed to raise hemp. Hemp is a good product,” said Mr. Paul Monday, The Associated Press reports.
It is illegal to grow hemp in the U.S. because of its relation to marijuana, however some states, including North Dakota, have urged the Drug Enforcement Association to allow the cultivation of hemp. The DEA considers hemp to be a controlled substance.
There are several states that issue licenses to cultivate hemp, however it is still considered an illegal practice by the federal government.
However, Mr. Paul argues that hemp does have beneficial uses, the crop is used to manufacture clothing, paper, lotions and other products in Canada and other nations throughout the world.

Good environmental issue for the Dr.
I think that when looking at the environment, this is an excellent issue for Dr. Paul. It is just one of several examples where his environmental policy would be a tremendous improvement upon supporters of the status quo who encourage:
- Clear-cutting of forests / unsustainable forestry practices (Alternative: hemp paper)
- High use of very toxic pesticides in growing cotton (16% of world's insecticide use). (Alternative: hemp fabrics)
- Increased oil use and drilling (Alternative: hemp plastics - http://www.hempplastic.com )
- Increased oil use and drilling (Alternative: hemp fuel/biodiesel)
- Increased coal burning pollution and acid rain (Alternative: hemp fuel)
- Poor soil health (Alternative: hemp crop rotation)
Etc.

I've been ordering hemp products for quite a few years -- just ordered 10 pairs of hemp socks a few days ago. My favorite site is: http://www.rawganique.com/ , but there are many other sites. Sometimes, I wish that every hemp product order I place included a post card sent to a U.S. farmer that stated something like: "You could have had my business, but you voted foran idiot to inhabit the White House."
The only reason hemp is illegal..
The only reason hemp is illegal is because it produces high amounts of CBD, a powerful cancer fighter... Hemp/CBD does NOT get you high, so there can be no other reason.
CBD has also been shown to have anti-anxiety properties.

I always wondered why the US
I always wondered why the US goverment and 'researches' failed to push hemp as a source of ethanol for fuel.
- It produces many times the energy per acre
- It grows where corn does, so those farmers could change crops
- It shouldn't producing significantly more profit per acre than corn, so there would be no large-scale migration to hemp that causes corn/grain shortage
Only reasons against it that I can think of, which are all silly:
- You can't control the seed (as easily)
- No immediate needs to genetically engineer
- It competes with pulp wood, so it would really throw the logging industry off balance, who already have trouble selling all their pulp wood
Monsanto will stop hemp at all costs
Hemp looks like it is the answer to many problems, and saving many trees for the huggers. This isn't a crop that needs manipulation so Monsanto would oppose it. Monsanto the biggest Fascist company ever. basically owns the EPA. If their is any chance of it going anywhere it has to get support from the people.

Hemp is NOT a drug! It is a close cousin of the Waky Tobaccy, but it CAN NOT be smoked. You will get lung cancer before you get a high. Even if it was a drug, it should still be legal.
HEMP is a better source of ethanol
than corn according to RP in a speech. I don't recall the exact video on you tube, but I do remember the crowd cheered; it is remarkable to note that those people didn't exhibit the typical look of the pot smoker.
Thee best source of ethanol
Hemp has four times the biomass and cellulose potential and eight times the methanol potential of its closest competing crop - corn. Industrial hemp is the number one biomass producer on earth, meaning an actual contender for an economically competitive, clean burning hemp fuel. Planting only 6 percent of the United States total agricultural cropland with biomass crops such as hemp would supply all current domestic demands for oil and gas. Some researchers suggest if that 6 percent number was increased to 10 percent could have the United States independent of foreign oil in estimated 180-200 months time (fewer than 20 years).

Out here in Maine we have thousands and thousands of acres
not being used properly. We have lumber companies coming in and cutting down trees and sending the wood outside Maine. When Dr. Paul takes office as President of the USA we can look forward to having HEMP Legalized and Maine could become a leader once again in many kinds of industry with the advent of Hemp.
Thank you so much President Paul. Maine loves you as you know, and we deserve to be healthy and prosperous.

Your state would have to legalize hemp
Here, to be accurate I edited a portion of your comment...

Food is a theological problem for idolators
"Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion. Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God. For he shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answereth him in the joy of his heart." Ecclesiastes 5:18-20
"Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness." Isaiah 55:1-2
"The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down. The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season. Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing."
Psalms 145:14-16
Why is it that the rights to such abundance which should be enjoyed by all people, nourished and sustained by all that God has richly provided in nature, is considered anathema to those who believe they have somehow ascended to God's throne and must declare unclean what He has blessed and called good?

History of Hemp
George Washington famously said "Make the most you can of the Indian Hemp seed, and sow it everywhere".
Vikingswould take large amounts of hemp seed with them on thier over seas trips. The Vikings wanted to be prepared in case they were shiped wreaked on a desert island, and hemp was the very thing they wanted in that situation! Hemp can grow on every continent in the world except Antarctica, and can grow in soil that is sandy, dry, wet, well, you get the picture! It's incredably easy to grow, it requires almost no herb, fungi, or pesticides because it's amazingly resilient.
It is believed that Betsy Ross made the first American flag with Hemp Fabric! WOW!
Unlike corn oil, Hempoil is actualy a very good biofuel for cars. Other countries are starting to use Hemp oil istead of gas because it's legal to grow.
It's great for building houses! I was reading an atical in the paper about how people in America are buying bricks made mostly of Hemp from other countries to build thiers homes. The Hemp bricks are an incredable insulator, even better than fiber glass.
Hemp is very nutritious food! Hemp seed are high in fiber and omega3s!
Unlike its cousin pot, YOU CAN NOT SMOKE HEMP!!! It is literally impossible. You will get lung cancer before you get a high!!
With all this being said, WHY IS HEMP ILEGAL!!!!
Why Is Hemp Illegal?

Hemp is one of the world's most useful plants. Its uses range from paper to fuel, and it could replace many environmentally destructive products.
For thousands of years hemp has been used as a food, to make clothing, as a medicine and as a drug. It can be turned into plastics and made into petroleum without producing sulphur, thus reducing CO2 in the atmosphere. Until 1883, 75 to 90% of all paper in the world was made from hemp.
Due to difficulties harvesting it in large quantities, hemp fell out of favour as a profitable crop in the late 1800s, until an automated harvester was developed in the 1930s.
In the intervening years, many industries were developed to take over hemp's role in production: oil was drilled from the ground, trees were used for paper and new sources of cloth were developed. Many of the companies involved now had a vested interest in making hemp illegal.
The United States was the first country to introduce laws to destroy hemp plants, regardless of their intended use. That law was the result of political pressure exerted by the forestry industry and the Dupont corporation, which had just patented oil and coal based plastics production.
Dupont's chief financial backer, Andrew Mellon, was US President J. Edgar Hoover's secretary of the treasury. He appointed his nephew, Harry J. Anslinger, to a position in the Federal Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.

he's been giving Congress the key for well over 7 years on industrial hemp...when the North Dakota University & 2 Republican legislators took the DEA to court because they paid the $2000+ license & never received a permit from the DEA, after all the expenses the Judge ruled it was a legislative matter not judicial - who other than Dr. Paul has provided the key to bring hemp back to the USDA & States? .....jobs, jobs, jobs from the farmers fields - now he needs additional support for this Resolution & to get it out of committee where they always stick it instead of passing this great legislation - "hemp IS NOT marijuana" PS - beware NAIHC is comprised of big corporate interest & was chaired by ex CIA - better group is www.votehemp.org
Working to free the hemp seed - Thanks to Congressman Paul's efforts HR 1831. Peace
How far backward we've slipped since the founding
George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both grew hemp. Ben Franklin owned a mill that made hemp paper. Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence on hemp paper.

Declaration and Constitution Not Written Upon Hemp Paper
That is a myth. The biggest perpetuation of that myth is the Legalize Marijuana people. It is true that many papers back in that time were drafted on hemp paper. The truth is that it was written on parchment, which is a paper fabricated with lamb skin or animal skin.

The biggest myth?
I'm not sure why this would be your very first comment since joining the DP, but we all have to start somewhere, I guess.
Michael made the point that it was "drafted...on hemp paper", so I'm not sure why you would start your post as some kind of myth-buster with two inarticulate sentences before acknowledging what was said in the first place.
Just trying to be helpful to you in getting your point across a little better, by encouraging a little clearer writing when sending a corrective comment, eh? ;-)
