[Updated] Smart Meters: We Texans are Pro-Choice
Submitted by VR on Tue, 02/21/2012 - 15:23As the rules currently stand, the PUC has not provided a mechanism that would allow consumers to opt out of smart meter installation on their property. We believe, however, from a review of the legislation from which the PUC rules are derived, that the legislature’s intent was permissive and not mandatory in nature. We further believe therefore that an opt out measure should be made available to Texas consumers.

UPDATE: Since our original posting the Public Utilities Commission has opened a project case on this issue entitled “PUC Proceeding to evaluate the feasibility of instituting a smart meter opt-out program.” This is the first step in the Commission considering implementing an opt-out program for smart metering technology in Texas

Update
bump
This is a HUGE issue in British Columbia, Canada.
I was at a meeting last night hosted by reps from BC Hydro. We are a massive Province with a huge energy supply.
People are very concerned about Smart Meters for primarily these 3 reasons:
1) EMF Health Concers related to Cancer
2) Data Privacy
3) Consumer Cost
BC Hydro says the Smart Meters are voluntary but they're acting like they are MANDITORY with over 500,000 already installed. People are absolutely furious, so much so, that we might hold a Provincial Referendum to remove the Smart Meters.
Best Wishes,
C4RP

Speaking of costs
my bill did not shrink after they did not have to pay someone to come out to read the meter anymore. Plus, they charge me for their new meter.
I'm in the wrong business. ;)
Opt in... opt out?
... pro and cons?
