Public Policy Polling: Santorum leads in Washington State, Romney second, Paul third

February 21, 2012
Santorum leads in Washington

Wedged between the Michigan/Arizona primaries and Super Tuesday the Washington state GOP caucus hasn't received a lot of attention. At least for now it looks like it could give Rick Santorum some momentum headed into the critical March 6th contests. He leads there with 38% to 27% for Mitt Romney, 15% for Ron Paul, and 12% for Newt Gingrich.

Santorum is by far the most popular of the Republican candidates with 69% viewing him favorably to only 18% with a negative opinion. Romney is the only other one who even has a positive favorability rating. He's at 47/42. The disparity between Santorum and Romney's numbers in Washington resembles what we found for the contests two weeks ago in Missouri and Minnesota, both of which Santorum ended up winning by a healthy margin.
Next week looks like it could be disastrous for Gingrich. He's in 4th place in both Washington and Michigan, and in 3rd place in Arizona. He's not remotely close to finishing in the top 2 in any of those states. It's not just that Republican voters aren't planning to vote for Gingrich, they don't even like him any more. In Washington his favorability is upside down at 39/46 and the same is true in Michigan (39/50) and Arizona (43/48) as well.

My experiences here.

I work at Boeing in Everett, and I was a delegate to state last time. I know neocons at work who are pro-Santorum. 2 in particular at one time or another was previously open to Ron Paul. These folks watch too much FOX news and their minds have been miseducated. It's a rather unfortunate condition, but it is far too prevalent here. We may build commercial airplanes, but it is still the military industrial complex. So it's that kind of thinking, and also unionist solidarity movement socialism which prevails.

Ron will come away with a lot of Washington delegates, but I can not realistically say for sure we will win this state in delegate count. We have a good shot at it though. The party apparatus here feels very threatened by us, and so we will see more corruption, and already have seen some in counties where it was documented last time. Washington has a core of hardcore supporters, and we did a great job of turning out for Ron when he came to town last week. Currently though Ron Paul PCO's are not being mailed their PCO packets, and before Dec. 15th when people were signing up to be PCO's, Whatcom County GOP was like "We don't want any Ron Paul supporters here, [CLICK]."

The campaign headquarters has many wonderful people volunteering, and making calls. So many that I was called 3 times today! A campaign bigwig woke me up this morning, (I have told them many times I work nights). Now I know why NH folks, and a few from Iowa were so pissed when I called them, lol!

In closing, I'm seeing exactly the same things here in Wa. that I saw last time, but this time we have a lot more numbers. We will be able to put up a much stronger fight this time around. The neoconned masses do outnumber us, but they are divided between more candidates. The faction that wants war with Iran does outnumber us though. They love empire. It's going to be close, and there will be attempts at hijacking/steamrolling. We can win it, but it will depend on the turnout we get.

Wish us luck.

"Republicans don't even like him any more."

A better way to put it would be, "Neocons don't know what they want now any more than they did a month ago."
