OUR Mistakes in covering the Troops March
Submitted by Britons4Paul on Wed, 02/22/2012 - 05:43I would first like to preface this post by saying that I deliberated for a considerable period over whether or not to make this post. I did not want my points to be misconstrued as negative or critical. In the end I decided to post, hoping that all those involved (directly or indirectly) are mature enough to take this for what it is...an experienced media persons advice and brief of lessons to be learned.
Please take it in this vein as this is the only intention.
==============================================
We knew before hand, and as we expected, the MSM had little or no coverage of this historic event. As far as I am aware, there was no "LIVE" coverage at all. And only a few precious mentions after the fact. The liberty movement expected this and made some attempts to offer an alternative.
The alternatives were live streams by participants at the event. The participants armed with smart phones and wireless laptops sent streams to the internet so those around the world could view the event "LIVE". Others had similar devices in addition to camcorders and still cameras to document the event, but did not send any live streams.
In the days and weeks leading up to this event, I sent numerous emails, made numerous forum posts, Facebook (event page) comments and tweets soliciting anyone who was going to be in attendance to contact and coordinate with me in order to arrange MULTIPLE streams and feeds of the event.
Sadly, of the many emails and messages sent and posted, I had less than 3 responses, and of those only 1 who actually followed through with their commitment to me. Instead most of the public responses on Facebook and twitter were along the lines of "The organizer is going to stream on his website." There were other places I was directed to view a stream, but these places were simply the same stream as on the organizer's site, but under a different website portal.
Granted, I may not be aware of all of the streams, but I am aware of 4.
1. Adam vs the Man - Ustream
2. Meg McClain -Ustream (same as Adam vs the Man)
3. Fr33Agents - Ustream (Unique feed)
4. Ron Paul Flix - - Ustream (Unique feed)
There was also my LiveStream channel, but this was a combination of the 3 unique feeds.
Now, on the face of it, this might seem to be quite good. In fact it was doomed to face problems. The first of which is that when one stream ended or got cut off, viewers were scrambling to to find another stream somewhere.
On a fair portion of the streams some of the camera operators were standing nearly side by side, thus offering the same vantage point.
Viewers were required to have multiple websites open and trying to view multiple streams utilising precious resources and bandwidth, not to mention the daunting task of having to try to multi-task and hunt for the most reliable feed or prospective.
During many feeds, either video or audio signal was lost unknown by the person sending the feed.
Many of these issues could have been avoided with a little coordination and team effort.
For example, on my Livestream I have resources to accept multiple feeds, video, audio, and phone-ins, Skype, etc. Because of this I am able to "Vision Mix" and conduct interviews. Provide instant replays, graphic overlays, cut to interviews, etc.. Basically I had the ability to "produce" a show rather than simply rely on a raw feed.
This type of setup would instantly broadcast the best angle, the best sound. Cut to a working feed if one feed crashes or freezes. This would mean that there would be at least one centralised and coordinated source to which viewers could be directed to get the ultimate coverage without the goose chasing.
For the die hard supporters of this movement and the campaign, any sort of coverage even if via a dialup connection would have sufficed. But for those not in the movement, It must be recognised that its not that simple. We must try our best to offer a REAL alternative to the MSM.
I know the talent and resources exist in our ranks, and its unfortunate we didn't plan better for this type of situation.
Time doesn't permit me to cover all of the points that I would like, but I hope that I have at least started a conversation about this, and pointed out some areas where we can improve.
I also hope that a feeling that I have in the back of my mind, (that some of the reason there wasn't more access to this event was because of some who wish to "own" the event or its "coverage")is just me being too cynical.
Lastly, although I mentioned my channel and its capabilities, this is in no way intended to say it should have been my channel that offered these capabilities. What I am saying is that we have the resources, and the know how to do this, whoever and however it is done. And regardless of who or where, these lessons and points still apply.
Please leave comments and address some of these points or raise some of your own. I don't expect the MSM to suddenly decide to play fair and cover the movement and campaign, so its up to us to do it.
Its not enough just to post on YouTube, we need a real alternative to the MSM. We are the movement, lets own it!
There are countless upcoming events, let's learn from our experiences so far and march on!

UPDATE 01:
Since posting this, a number of people have asked how they can contribute to this effort. I am compiling a list names and contact details for those who wish to be involved. Very shortly I will have a link where you can register your interest and submit your contact details.
For those who have asked how to contribute financially, I am working on this as well. The plan is to provide a 100% transparent system where people can donate and see exactly where their contribution is being used. Until that system is fully up and running, I can direct you to www.world4ronpaul.com . There you will find a link to a donation form. You can back a donation of any size with my firm assurance that any donated funds will be utilised for this effort and will be included in the financial reporting as soon as its ready to launch.
Lastly, for any sceptics out there who may think this is a way to solicit money, all I can say is no this is not the case. To date all I have done has been free, and will always be free, with or without any donations or financial support from anyone.

UPDATE 02:
If you would like to register your interest in this project please do so here: http://www.world4ronpaul.com/index.php/archives/1162
The idea for this form is to begin to coordinate support for those who wish to take part or play a role in making this a success. More updates will follow as and when.

Holidays
We've done many of these parades and rallies on holidays when the media first-strings have a day off and the streets around the venues are empty.
We ought to either go where the crowds are (DisneyLand comes to mind, though very authoritarian and unwelcoming, but you get the idea) or hold it on a day when business is open and there are people on the street (D.C. when Congress is in session).
Also, when the event is over, a trek to the nearest TV station or newspaper to surround the place would be in order (with our crowds, we could surround some radio stations, too).
What do you think? http://consequeries.com/
MSM are dedicated to misinformation their survival depends on it
I am a very recently awakened individual my experience may shed some light on the MSM situation.
I am almost 38 years old, latino/Caucasian mother of 3 and I am a registered voter I do not belong to any party I my voter card states PND (party not declared)because my loyalty is to the best candidate not party. Until October I always had some news station playing in the background any and all channels except FOX I thought they were opinions not facts.
I did not really on one news source I searched the web daily as well believing I was informed always confirming issues I deemed important. I BELIEVED I KNEW WHAT WAS GOING ON IN THE WORLD AND TOOK PRIDE IN MY KNOWLEDGE.
WELL since March (2011) I had been visiting Al Jazeera.com to get updates on Lybia and one evening I had some free time and clicked on the Americas which has American videos of current news I never checked it before cause I live in America and am obsessed with news so I thought I knew. I was digested to learn there had been US Citizens camped out on Wall ST for 3 weeks and I am hearing it for the 1st time from foreign media. I went on a 2 week mission scouring the internet for everything I did not know. I rarely slept and felt like a fool I was ashamed of myself for being so naive.
Needless to say I have not watched MSM since and never will ( I LOVED ANDERSON COOPER THAT LYING PIG) and I am sure the next viewer who stumbles onto the truth will have the same reaction.
They will go out of business if the masses learned the truth. You can not blame the viewer they think they are informed you dont know what you dont know until you learn otherwise.
Welcome to the awaken world view
I had a similar experience to yours as many others here.
The country and the world is run by a ruling class and the media is their propaganda tool to keep all us slaves misinformed, scared, entertained, busy and unhealthy in body and mind.
But we are now millions that know, the cat is out of the bag and we are winning, only a question of time.

Hope you had a nice rest, because
you will be busy here on DP. Glad you woke up and found us waiting for you.
Welcome!
back in Iowa now
Really tired after the drive to rochester,ny. Has anyone contacted channel 4 NBCs cameraman was there for the entire event. also saw him filming at several times. NOW i know it probably was not even brodcasted on the local dc news but perhaps the videographer has a lot of footage. I was going to contact him and talked w/ Zak Carter about it. It would maybe be a good idea to see if 1 person could talk directly to the guy. Maybe Adam since he is up there in DC. Ill be talking to Zak in a few days about it. Capt Grote

I streamed with My Laptop
Hi All,
I was one of those streaming the march in dc, i had the black laptop, if anyone saw me. anyway, just thought id say that had i known there was some sort of effort i would have surely made the best attempt to coordinate it with others. I for one only thought of it at the last minute and used my wireless hotspot on my phone and my laptop to provide the feed for friends back home in NY and anyone who wanted to watch, at one point I had over 300 viewers of my live feed channel on ustream and i guess at this point mine was the only one up from some of the comments on my channel. honestly this was my first attempt at live streaming an event and i wasn't so sure how to do it properly, i was only going by what i had seen people in OWS do in NYC and my desire to get the event out to as many people as possible as part of my contribution to the veterans and my countrymen. I plan on making other events and will gladly work with any of you to counter the media blackout and become our own media. also side note Luke Rudowski from we are change also had a feed and interview myself and others after the event was over. I can speak to the problems with connectivity and feeds cutting in an out a lot of my footage and interviews was lost due to this, anyone with tips on how to prevent that in the future would be great.
I saw you
or someone with a laptop in front of the White House. I assumed you were streaming by the way you were holding it and moving it around.
Yes I believe Luke's stream was going to RonPaulFlix. Its unfortunate that there wasnt better coordination, but we are now working toward (hopefully) dramatically improving on this.
If you or anyone else want to help with upcoming events, I invite you to come and join the project discussion over here: http://www.world4ronpaul.com/index.php/forum/general-discuss...
With a bit of work we will surely out do the mainstream media coverage of this campaign and so much more.

I've been thinking about this . . .
it never hurts to think of ways to improve anything. *We* all have different gifts, and everyone's gifts are needed.
But . . .--
I started to feel very angry about so little MSM coverage of this amazing event--
and then I had a realization.
These people have been through the crucible; most of them have seen horrific things; most have been in war zones, if not all of them--
and they are, what did Adam say, "savvy"--
these people ARE an elite group, in the best sense of the word, and this experience has solidified and strengthened not only those vets but those of us who witnessed it via *whatever youtube broadcast*--
It will NOT be lost. It may seem that way, if the MSM ignores it, but it will not be lost; it will not go unnoticed; no good thing ever is lost--
Big and great things will come of it--
Thanks for listening to this old Viet Nam era non-vet who needed to see what *I* saw Monday!
it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--
Thank you for your comment
and your service. Many Vietnam veterans don't receive the thanks they so rightly deserve. So please, allow me to say- THANK YOU for your service and sacrifice!

Ron Paul friendly news: http://www.newsetal.com/
Oh, I didn't serve--
I said "non-vet", but I was one of those rare people who treated returning vets with respect--
Those were dark days--
I did lose friends--
this 'name' covers two of *us* (husband and wife); one of us had a high draft number and was going to join the AF until the high draft number was allocated; the other was female, and the draft didn't apply.
We were supportive of our friends in Viet Nam, but our feelings about our government leaders at that time were not positive--
We have one very close friend who suffered from years of ptsd; he once told us that we were among the very few who honestly would listen to him talk about what he experienced and accept him--
it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--
I Thought Adam Kokesh Mentioned Freedom Watch
contacting him about covering the event.
Unfortunate that the program ended just a week prior to the rally.

It does make you wonder
And is food for thought for all the theorists out there. :)

Counter Productive
We all know Ron Paul is blacked out by the MSM and the other candidates attributes are a tad fudged. Well with all this trying to push people away from the MSM, don't you think its a little counter productive to have MSM there covering it when we are telling people to disregard the MSM as a source for information? I say, be happy they didn't show up. No MSM means no distortion of the truth.
True
And I don't think we are trying to drive anyone to the MSM. We are trying to improve upon our own efforts to cover these events within the movement.

Ron Paul friendly news: http://www.newsetal.com/
I agree with this. Somehow,
I agree with this. Somehow, whether it's the "Patriot Movement", or specifically the Ron Paul supporters..or even the formal Campaign itself; we really already should have had our own alternative, HIGH QUALITY, coverage available for ALL major events.
If we did what this poster suggests, if the MSM ever DID get forced into covering the RP Campaign, they at least would have some high-quality clips to use. As it is, all they could do is broadcast the typical cellphone video. And as the poster says, that's fine for we who are already involved and supportive. But it's not good enough for the sleepers out there on the verge of waking up.
Good ideas there, Britons4Paul. We need to get our media more finely honed. And get any ego issues out of it.
Thank you for your comment
I am working feverishly to launch a site dedicated to managing this effort as I fear we are too fragmented in our efforts and suffer greatly from lack of coordination.
I will post an update ASAP.

Heads high
Living on the West coast--and not a service member--I was looking forward to the event for months. When it came down to it, I was pulled away with work and I did not find the kind of exposure that I expected during or after.
But I think the event was a total success. These things should not just be done for media exposure for the sheeple. These kind of events also serve to hearten the hearts of the die-hards and to send the right kind of message to Washington.
Media coverage or no, this type of specific event is extremely powerful.
Hey GOP, where's my vote?
I'm so glad . . .
this conversation is happening, but a bit miffed at the negativity. I understand the OP has a little resentment for being underutilized, but look at what we DID accomplish!
http://youtu.be/9yewKCcFSvQ
Anyway, since we will be marching on the RNC, it's time to direct all this energy towards making sure our voices are heard then, so please, let's make it happen. I just made a new subforum for this here:
http://forums.adamvstheman.com/viewforum.php?f=24
You and the vets did an earth-shakingly superb
job Adam, and we all thank you. but I think Britons was only suggesting that the coverage can be improved, and is offering his services to help coordinate the very best broadcasting we grassroots supporters can come up with. He sounds very knowledgeable and motivated, and is on target that cooperative tech ingenuity can make all of our efforts that much greater and more effective. I hope you will enjoy the support being offered.
hey Adam
Thank you and the other organizers so much for putting on this event, i think it was a success, truly historic.
Thank you, Adam, for what you did--
please thank everyone else for one DPer . . .--
it was inspiring; it was a privilege to view it all--
it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--
It was awesome.
I watched the entire thing and cried often. Thanks for your hard work.
Constructive criticism is okay. It can only make things better.

My Hat is Off to You!
Clap! Clap! Cheer! Yippee! Whistle! Hooray, Adam! Well done! Well Done! What an absolutely wonderful and powerful event! My hat is off to you for the width and breadth of what you accomplished. 'Looking forward to a repeat performance at the RNC. Every day in every way more, more, more! An improved broadcast would also be ideal. You guys rock. Bravo!
Adam, no negativity intended
Adam, no negativity intended from my part either.
If what you guys accomplished there doesn't register on the media-scale, it's safe to assume nothing will so we'll have to make our own waves. I'm based in the Netherlands so pretty limited in what I can do anyway, but I'm happy to brainstorm and do what I can from here.

Thank you for your comment
But I would kindly ask that you re-read the post with an open mind. There is no intended negativity, and certainly no reason to be miffed. There is no cause for resentment on my part either.
I will say that its regretful that there was a missed opportunity, but this like most everything in life, has its own value as a learning experience.
I am creating an account on your forum when I finish here, and I will in the same spirit of all my previous offers, extend additional offers of support.
I agree the march was quite an accomplishment..all the more reason to make sure we maximise the audience for your next event and any other events in support of the movement.
I am keen to work together for the cause. Let's march on!

Fabulous Contribution!
There is power in numbers. It is wonderful that we are drawing on ALL our creative resources. We can and will "out-resource" the status-quo when need be. Thank you for your willingness to jump in.
