Ron Paul in Detroit on Monday for a very different event
Submitted by David A Dudenhoefer on Thu, 02/23/2012 - 14:08Dr. Paul will participate in a townhall event ( 11 am at the Lighthouse cathedral operated by The Historic Little Rock Baptist church @ 8801 Woodward Ave,in Highland Park). Highland Park is a city next to Detroit and hit hard. Why this is so different, is that it is a townhall with a demographic not normally addressed by candidates of any party...the poor and minorities of the inner city. Rev. Holly will introduce Dr. Paul and the event title is "Fixing Detroit's economic crisis".
This was an idea that I had presented in theory to the campaign and we put it together. To add to the importance, the church that the event will be held at is used as a school for high school drop outs, an excellent venue to discuss the institutional racism going on in our legal and school system.
It is my hope that people from all political backgrounds can see the value in supporting Dr. Paul. I believe this will be a standard bearer for future urban cities and in future elections. We cannot ignore our urban cities and how status quo policies have effected them.
Any candidate can speak at Ford Field or the Detroit economic club, few if any will speak to the citizens in hard hit communities. Dr. Paul is one in a million.
Fun fact, the last presidential candidate or president to speak in the inner city in Detroit was Harry Truman in 1952.
Thank you Dr. Paul for being you.
FYI
Michigan lost some delegates due to the moving of the primary, but it is winner take all by congressional district. 3 per and 14 at large for the overall winner.

So how did this event go ?
Any video ?
Also, isn't Michigan Winner take all BY DISTRICT, so some largely democratic districts, or university towns could maybe get delegates for Ron.
Delegate Count
I believe Michigan is on the 50% rule this year, (30 delagtes) due to moving their primary, that would mean the count above needs to be adjusted.

I must say
that this particular topic on the Daily Paul site is most interesting and I even find the comments very detailed and written with heart felt emotion.
I know that those who attend this visit by Ron will certainly be blessed with truth and hope.

Don't worry about safety
Thank you sharpsteve for posting the venue information. It is on Woodward Avenue just a little south of Highland Park and west of Hamtramck In Detroit. This should be a safe venue being on Woodward during the day. Download the address into Google maps and do a 'streetview' to have a look.

Hope someone posts a full
Hope someone posts a full recording of this speech. I really would like to hear it. I used to be married to a govt employee and we were moved to Detroit. I lived in the area 5 years in Royal Oak and Ferndale. The Detroit area is an interesting place to live. The people are strong because they have to be. I am from Tennessee and became a stronger person living there. I admire Dr. Paul for doing this speech. Please someone post this one if you get it.
I love Detroit
But not the Red Wings (I'm a Leaf fan, sorry). I live 60 miles NNW of Detroit in Ontario and haved been to downtown Detroit hundreds of times and have never felt imperiled even in some areas considered scary.
There is an offensive myth for Canadians that when driving through Detroit one needs to lock their car doors.
Thanx,
Jason

Ron Paul did his rotations at
Ron Paul did his rotations at Henry Ford Hospital. It is a few miles from Highland Park. Ford actually started in Highland Park and at one point was the best city to live in, in the US! Best schools, best economy, best everything. If you couldn't live there, you lived in the larger city of Detroit. Without Highland Park, Detroit would have been an empty city of farmland.
Also, a side note, Highland Park has one of the worst economies in the whole state, and maybe even the nation. A few years back, the city pretty much went out of business. There was no government. The state had to take over.
I find it really interesting that anyone candidate would go there. Many people I know are terrified to even drive through there. God bless Ron Paul.
Also, another side note, I am from Dearborn, a suburb of Detroit and a city with a huge Muslim/Arab population, and Ron Paul will be here Monday evening to meet with local Doctors. I have been a supporter of his since 2007, and I was pretty much alone. Now, almost everyone I know is a supporter of him. I've seen people that would never care for politics get involved in his campaign. Today, Friday, a group of people will be at the local mosque handing out fliers to the Muslims after Friday prayer. They'll be placing fliers translated to Arabic on the 4-500 cars in the parking lot as well as handing them out as they leave. Ron Paul has great potential in Michigan, and I believe he could come out on top, especially in Dearborn.
RP
RP said he used to work in Detroit. Perhaps this area has some special significance for him.

Just sent this off to my Detroit family and friends. Glad to see him get out in the community.
Is Michigan an open primary?
Is Michigan an open primary? Do these people have time to register Republican or has the deadline passed?
Its a closed primary thats open to everyone lol.
I live in Mi, the way I hear it worded is that it is a closed primary but anyone that is registered can vote so long as they ask for a republican ballot, (I know that sounds really stupid), my guess is that the neocons want to discourage dems and independents from voting so they call it a closed primary but it really is not. I just drove by the city hall of the city I work in and the sign/ticker out front says "Feb 28th Closed Primary" so to me this seems like some shady business.
Edit: You must have been registered to vote before Jan 28th to vote in the primary.
Just need to be registered to
Just need to be registered to vote. Go to polling and ask for republican ballot, which I am pretty sure is all they offer.
security
i wasn't impressed with rp's security in denver. i would feel more comfortable if he had security set up like at a concert in order to get in to see him. he needs secret service protection on top of the team he has now.
“We have allowed our nation to be over taxed and over regulated and overrun by bureaucrats, the founders would be ashamed of us for what we're putting up with.” Ron Paul
I don't think anything would
I don't think anything would happen, but Highland Park is a very dangerous city. Many people avoid going there, or even driving through unless it is on the freeway. But the police response time is very quick over there now, so I have hope for that city. It was once the jewel of America. Here it is now: http://youtu.be/NlD76MZ6C78
Concerned?
Are you concerned about his security because he is going to be with the poor and minorities of inner city? If so, you're a bigot.
It is better to look dumb and not be, than to look smart and not be.
It's a dangerous area. I know because
I grew up and lived nearby for 25 years. People who have never lived in the poor areas of large cities like Detroit often walk around in their safe suburbs with the naive impression that those areas are poor but not dangerous to outsiders. That's largely a result of our media's brainwashing.
I have "progressive" family members who left Detroit before the '67 riots when neighborhoods were either all white or all black but rarely integrated. They now live 30 miles away in the comfortable suburbs, they swallow the media lies, and they talk about buying a house in one of the historic Detroit neighborhoods which have been ravaged and destroyed since the white exodus. Of course, it's all just talk. They raised their kids in their safe areas but they won't admit that Detroit is a danger zone.
Ignore the media's lies and propaganda.
Actually the media promotes the idea
That the poor areas are super dangerous, and that people should never go there.
Most people in poor areas are not criminals - like 99%. And you can travel in these areas without being hassled, in the daytime, most of the time. Plus there are many genuinely kind people who will help strangers. The 99% in these areas need tools to help themselves, and they do not have them (e.g. rights to carry firearms, fewer regulations to allow legitimate businesses and markets to be created, more local control, better law enforcement.
However, the progressives would have you believe that there is not even a higher rate of crime. That is not true, and you are way more likely to be robbed, or have your car stolen in these areas. There are definitely rules to follow - like keep your iPhone in your pocket, that you need to think about in those locations. It is miserable and difficult living, that spills over to neighboring communities.
How about a little experiment?
Ride the Woodward bus for five days in a row.....and lets see what happens. Get it on film.
I'd quibble with your 99% figure, but you make several good points.
Ignore the media's lies and propaganda.

“We have allowed our nation to be over taxed and over regulated and overrun by bureaucrats, the founders would be ashamed of us for what we're putting up with.” Ron Paul
You're a moron.
Then according to your rationale, the minorities living there who see it necessary to put bars on their windows are also bigots.
If that's a bigot, you'd be a fool not to be one.
Whoah dude
Dont you think its a bit presumptuous to make that assumption. To throw out that someone is a bigot without knowing the persons intent is pretty fricken rude and judgemental. I am concerned for his safety as well, I am concerned no matter where he goes, but when visiting the outskirts of one of the most crime ridden towns in this country, I do not think it is irrational for someone to be concerned.
Why do I have a feeling the
Why do I have a feeling the huffington post won't be reporting about this event? It seems as if they have been doing everything in their power lately to try to discredit Paul, but never report about issues like this. Ron Paul will take his time to visit areas that have been hit the hardest by the recession when the "progressive hero" obama would never attend such an event. Obama and the rest of the GOP field will be speaking to the auto manufacture owners in Michigan who took government bailout funds at private clubs while Ron Paul will be speaking with the workers who lost their jobs in a poverty stricken area. Can anyone still argue that Ron Paul does not Stan with the people? This should be proof that Ron Paul is the only one running who stands with the people.
