Sometimes it is not enough to do our best; we must do what is required.

The title is a quote from Winston Churchill.

In what may have been my most widely-read article, I compared Paul to Churchill in an attempt to put the good doctor, and the efforts of those who support him, into historical context. Doug Wead, one of Paul’s senior campaign advisers went even further in an interview with Cavuto, saying simply “Paul is Churchill”. (*)

As we Paul supporters have failed so far to rack-up a victory in the primary or caucus beauty contests, I have started noticing that some are considering giving in to defeatism.

That is not worthy of Dr. Paul or our cause – and Winston Churchill will show you why.

In 1940, during the Second World War, Hitler’s tyranny had already swept across all of Europe. The score was liberty - zero; tyranny – too many to count.

Only Britain was left standing. And Hitler came for us.

In the Battle of Britain, the British stood alone in the world against a tyranny that had built an empire more efficiently than any had been built in history. This was when Churchill rallied the nation with what many regard as his greatest speech.

“Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few”, he said.

But the British did nothing more than survive. By “winning” the Battle of Britain, what we really did was “avoid losing”. We didn’t push Hitler back an inch. We just ensured that we – a metaphorical beach-head of liberty in a literal island of liberty – would live to fight another day. We were just a moral, if not military, thorn in Hitler’s side, reminding the world what resistance against tyranny looks like when the stakes get high, and what courage can achieve against the odds.

It was obvious to the whole world that the English could not defeat Hitler from our little island. Hitler was content to leave us be if only we would agree a peace with him: Churchill’s acceptance of the new status quo in Europe would have consolidated and legitimized Hitler’s gains. That would have sufficed for Hitler, and for the British, militarily and politically, it would have made a great deal of sense.

And let’s be clear. After the Battle of Britain, for the best part of a year, there was no world war. There was a united Europe, and it was “at peace”, or in equilibrium if you prefer, under the Nazi flag. Hitler’s success was so complete that the standard of living of Germans under Hitler peaked in 1941 – while the British were already on severe rationing with nothing to keep their spirits up except dogged determination and the sense that they were doing the right thing, Goddamnit.

The strategy? Churchill again: “Never give in. Never give in. Never. Never. Never”.

To thousands of people around the world, that all seemed a bit radical or ill-judged. After all, the British moral high ground was not, alas, the kind of useful high ground that provides any military advantage.

But Churchill had a certain clarity.

In his words again,

"If you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than live as slaves."

To all of you liberty-loving, Ron Paul-supporting Patriots, this is why you are fighting today.

Churchill’s conviction subsequently proved to be critical to the eventual victory over tyranny. Even Stalin said that in the war against Germany, “Russia provided the blood; America provided the money, and Britain provided the time”.

Why did he mention the time in the same breath as the blood and the money? Because the time mattered just as much.

Britain’s stubbornness was the moral link between the lost battles fought against Hitler by country after country that he over-ran (c.f. the lost battles fought in this country against the Patriot Act, the NDAA, wars of choice etc.), and the fight-back that would start a few years later. The time the Brits bought enabled enough others to see the stakes for themselves, and to arm themselves for the fight. Those others, of course, included the Russians and the Americans. Certainly, the liberty of the world would not have been saved without either of those powers - but it also would not have been won without the stubborn refusal of the British to admit defeat, buying time, during which they defined the cause against Hitler. In so doing, they provided a spiritual forward position – and a physical infrastructure and base (Roosevelt’s impregnable “aircraft carrier” on the edge of Europe) - from which to launch a counter-attack.

If you haven’t yet gotten the analogy, we – Ron Paul’s supporters, lovers of the Constitution, and activists for liberty – are the spiritual forward position, providing the physical infrastructure – for the retaking of our Continent, too – whenever that time comes.

And if the analogy sounds fanciful, bear in mind that, ultimately, the stakes are the same.

Whatever happens with our candidate’s bid for the Presidency (and those who understand that this is really about delegates know that we are still very much in the game), we have clearly increased our support three or four-fold in four years. That’s our Battle-of-Britain victory. And like the British, we should celebrate the battle won - not upset ourselves with the fact that the War is not yet over.

Tyranny has indeed taken over our land, with the NDAA, Patriot Act, militarization of the homeland, launching of unnecessary wars etc. etc. – but we are finally standing up in large numbers. We have drawn our line, and we have defended it firmly. Unlike the British in the Battle of Britain, we have even gained ground. Our huge increase in support from 2008 to 2012 proves that our metaphorical island of liberty in a continent of tyranny will not be over-run.

And like the British in 1940, we are not going away.

By existing – by refusing to lie down – we buy time. This is the time until the time that the idea whose time has come, comes(!) And meanwhile, again like the British in 1940 and 1941, we inspire others by our resilience, and wait for others to see what we see. When they discover what we already know, they will find us already here on our island of liberty - and they will find that the plans to take back our nation have already been drawn up and that there is already an army for them to join.

Like the British were then, we are now - a significant group who are fighting to regain liberty in a tyrannized continent of hundreds of millions. That was always going to be a long game.

AJP Taylor, one of the most important historians of modern times, ventured that part of Churchill’s steadfastness came from his almost romantic sense that, in their history and in their very being, the British people were a free people, and that in their character, they were strong and resilient.

That was enough for Churchill to believe that if only they held fast in their darkest hour, somehow they would prevail.

He turned out to be right.

Americans have the same in their history and in their blood. Liberty is the conceptual foundation of this nation, and a physical struggle against an attempt to deprive us of it is the physical foundation of this nation.

Bloody-mindedness, conviction and grit were enough to keep the British steadfast against the Blitz and V2 rockets until they found victory. They are certainly enough to keep us steadfast against a few electoral defeats until our victory.

The Brits had to wait five years for their ultimate victory. If we have to wait 20, we will have still had much the easier time of it.

Churchill knew that all the while you are fighting, you haven’t lost. In fact, the one necessary condition for losing is to make the choice to stop trying to win. He was, by the way, half-American.

Churchill was probably right when he said of those who fought the Battle of Britain, “Never was so much owed by so many to so few”.

The good news for us: we are not so few.

The comparisons between Paul

The comparisons between Paul and Churchill referenced at the top of this article were very specific... and entirely unrelated to your comment. Please go and read my article and listen to Wead's interview. The context is key.

Moreover, this article is obviously doing nothing more than pointing out lessons from a leader who inspired a population in a fight for what they perceived to be their liberty - specifically the lesson of staying focused on the ultimate goal despite hardship and despite apparent odds.

It is not a defense of the empire or particular aspects of Churchill's motivations, which are not discussed anywhere.

I am quite aware that Churchill was a royalist imperialist etc.... and that he was no moral panacea... but that really has nothing to do with the article.

Ron Paul Revolution!

Well done Robin! Looking forward to your next article where you will compare Ron Paul with...?

Positive support for Ron Paul ideas! Support from the Restoration and Liberty Movement on http://cristianpaduraru.com

A MOST INSPIRING TALE . . . but

One should begin at the beginning, not the middle.

It was Britain's unnecessary commitment to Poland that forced them into WWII. To me that is the part that most applies to us today. The U.S. of A. needs to avoid foreign entanglements and commitments.

Of course, one can go one step further backwards and see how the Brits ended WWI in such a way that a Hitler was predetermined to come on the scene. Today we see our policies creating bad guys all around the world.

Or one can go to the end, and see that the time bought with the blood of heroic Brits, Americans and others purchased all of Eastern Europe for the Communists as Churchill and Roosevelt gave away millions of people to Stalin.

The only victory fell to those who had been and continued to be greater killers than Hitler. The governments of the U.S. and Britain grew in size and scope. War is the health of the state.

I support Ron Paul because he wants to keep us out of war, not because he wants to become a great leader in a time of war.

Not a Dimes Worth of Difference - Except Ron Paul

My thoughts exactly...

... Churchill was a socialist and a ruthless politician, who's been mythologized in the official history like FDR and Lincoln. No hero of mine...

See:

"Alas! I believe in the virtue of birds. And it only takes a feather for me to die laughing."

agreed. churchill, FDR, and lincoln were all warmongers

the world would have been much better off without any of them.

Nobody is giving up...

It's either you support the cause of liberty, or you don't.

It's not about Ron Paul, it's about our freedom and destruction of it. Like comments below me stated, if Ron Paul isn't giving up, there is NO way anyone else should.

In fact, let's throw the term "giving up" out of the window right now. We are not quitters. We will continue fighting for liberty, no matter what it takes or how long it may take.

Ron Paul, 24/7.

But if The Good Doctor is, Heaven forbid, defeated ---

If, by some deviltry, Dr. Ron is defeated, in his "concession" speech, he should say, "Well, I lost to the forces of the Mainstream. Now just watch what happens in the next four years, and Don't Say I Didn't Warn You!"

Freedom is my Worship Word!

Listen Up

If a 76 year old man isn't willing to give up, we shouldn't be willing to give up. Let's get back on track and support the only person out there who can save our republic.

After Leon Panetta's testimony before congress, we need Ron Paul more than ever.

Don't give up!!!

Excellent article

Very eloquently written, puts the situation in context, and inspires. Thanks for sharing!

See you in Tampa

YOU SAVE MY FAMILY ROBIN! - THANK YOU!

****************************************************************
(Robin, before you read my entry, I would like you to see a pic of my family of 7 (1 not in pic) just before we left for the Ron Paul rally for the troops in DC last month, so you understand how dedicated we are.
It's the first pic on my RP Facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/TheRonPaulRevolutionLives Thanks!
****************************************************************

Robin, My family of seven, all Ron Paul supporters, had all but given up after super Tuesday until we read your dailypaul entry today. You have reinvigorated our support and enthusiasm for the Ron Paul campaign. Thank You!

Because of our deep sadness and sense of loss and being cheated on super Tuesday, we just felt as if there was no way of ever going up against the establishment and winning. We felt so cheated and hopeless. We were saying to each other, that if the establishment can make these voting results come out anyway they want, we will never have a chance at achieving our goals that have been inspired by Ron Paul, and therefore, are wasting our time and effort. We said to each other "This nomination is unattainable".

After reading your entry, I realized that the bigger, more important goals here are very much reachable. In fact, I now know they are! We must be patient, consistent and steadfast in our efforts to reach those very goals in which my families hero, Dr. Paul, has inspired us to achieve. After all, The good Dr. has been at it for 30+ years.

So once again, I want to thank you for steering my family and I back onto the correct route we need to be taking, in the effort to regain our freedoms and liberties that have been so deceitfully stolen from us.

Thanks Again!

The Power of Truth

Thank you so much, Robin, for being a part of the new American Revolution. This was a great, inspired and timely piece. You knew we needed to hear this and you delivered...again! I am so grateful!

It is the human drive for LIBERTY that burns in our bellies and unifies us in this diverse movement. And it is only this fire within each of us that will, ultimately, grow to stop the greater foe who is intent upon enslaving us.

TPTB depend upon force to control us, and it is breaking down as it based upon lies, fear and deception, which is inherently weak. We, on the other hand, have the POWER of TRUTH as our foundation, and because of this we will prevail. As each individual awakens to the TRUTH, they shake another near them, and they shake another, and another and another... so we grow and grow until we reach critical mass, and then, WE WIN. It is inevitable, for we are the embodiment of real POWER...unstoppable.

Ron Paul undersrands this for it is this POWER that resonates in the phrase he so often quotes: "An idea, who's time has come, cannot be stopped by any government or any army".

WE ARE UNSTOPPABLE...

If my need to be RIGHT is greater than my desire for TRUTH, then I will not recognize it when it arrives ~ Libertybelle

Well said The Libertybelle!

I feel the same way.

We should all just keep spreading the words and thoughts of Dr. Paul to people who are still asleep, and we should never never give up. It's a fight until death strategy! All the young people who literally love Ron Paul, I'm sure, will pass the message on to their children. When these young supporters grow older, our message will overcome the tyranny that poisons our country today.

The days of the government ignoring our constitution will soon be at an end! It's inevitable!

Our greatest supporter is time itself. Time will eventually lead us to the end of tyranny.

One of the Best

things I've read on DP. Thank You! We need to rally ourselves, dust ourselves off and continue the fight. We have to be a visible example for those who have not yet awakened to the cause of liberty (or the tyranny we fight).

Sometimes it is not enough...

I really enjoyed this history- good to know and remember. That was very well written and I have shared it around to others who might not access this site. It deepens the understanding of what this revolution is all about- not an easy win but certainly a game-changer....and the longer this campaign continues the more people come to awareness. You are right- when others wake up there will be a movement in place already for them to join. Thank you for that refreshing reminder of why we need to continue in this battle of regaining Liberty's ground. Let us not forget to pray along our way! God bless to all and thank you Robin!

Hurry up and wake up America!

My fear is that most Americans will not see the writings on the wall until it's too late, for if they did, there would be no other candidate but Ron Paul. Unfortunately, many of them are too preoccupied with what toilet paper the Kardashians used to wipe their ass this week. I'd REALLY like to believe that if we don't win this year, that we will only grow like we did since 2008, and win in 2016 or 2020. However, I also pray that it won't be too late before the government decides that this movement has grown enough and gained too much power/influence. That the government doesn't decide to cut off our communications (SOPA and other variants/Censorship), label our freedom/liberty movement and all who follow it as terrorists (NDAA), and implement martial law. 20 years ago, I would never have thought that I would be speaking of this "fear". However, 20 years ago I would have never imagined, or believed that in America of all places, the NDAA and Patriot Act would exist, and that to grow your own food or purchase raw milk, would be illegal. That bills like SOPA would be so close to passing, though others are in the works and will eventually pass. Can you imagine the "laws" that are yet to come. I hope people wake up before it's too late. As Dr. Paul said, "Sometimes you need a 2x4 to get'em to listen". I hope it doesn't take a 2x4 in order to wake up the rest of America for it's soon becoming "Now or Never".

Great piece, Robin,

and how appropriate for THIS DAY. It brings to mind the following (partial) verse that I have always thought contains an uncommon amount of wisdom:

"and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for [such] a time as this?"

How similar is that story to ours today.

Thank you

For your amazing articles and for your contributions. You are, simply put, one of my favorite writers ever and not just because of your Ron Paul support. You truly have a gift and never had that gift been more needed than right now.

Thank you for all you do and for a well-timed pep talk.

Tyranny?

If the British would really have a problem with tyranny, and the concept of one nation occupying another (like Germany invading Poland)... They could have withdrawn from a lot of places all around the world to give the right example.

I always found Churchill a bit hypocritical in his propaganda war against the Germans. But he sure has made a lot of really great quotes and speeches!

Ron Paul inspires

I knew Liberty, I studied her works...but Ron Paul gave me the call to action. We are changing the face of the political landscape.

People crave three things, Life, Liberty and Property. Once you know what those three things are...you can never be bought by another smooth talking politician. In fact politicians must consider our influence, and the influence of those like us. Even once we've won, we will press on.

Ron Paul made me want to be a better man. I work harder, I give more and I am happier. I will never cease my efforts to see the political landscape of our continent reshaped with his vision.

We R in your Corner Robin!

If you think your just too exhausted to continue the fight and all around you there is talk about giving up the fight, stop and think about how far we have come, the number of souls we have affected for the cause of liberty and of Ron Paul, the man we have rallied behind for the restoration of our liberties..

As long as Ron Paul and people like him are willing to continue the fight for the cause of liberty, i will be there fighting right along side of him..

As Sir Winston Churchill once said, "If you don't fight while you can still win, you'll have to fight, give your blood, when there is no hope of winning."

We must hang together and see this fight through, or surely will hang seperately..

In liberty,

"E"

The problem with this analogy

Is that it confuses goals with strategy with tactics.

So I get it, and agree, we have a long term goal, and we need to show up and fight if we are to achieve that goal. No one's talking about leaving the movement as far as I can tell. Some are saying that working within the republican party has become unproductive, and we should consider more fertile ground.

By doing this, we stay in the fight after the convention, punish the Republican elites and their sycophant media toadies (Rush, Hannity Levin), and perhaps lay the foundation for a truly competitive, and honest third party. Something we will probably need to continue the fight.

Needless to say, there were arguments in Britain about the specific best ways to fight the Germans. And Churchills stubbornness often cost him in terms of strategies and tactics. Remember Gallipoli in WWI - Mostly Churchills Idea. The Norway invasion, and giving in to Stalin at Yalta. There were some smaller items as well. He did give in on his soft underbelly of Europe argument, and went along with the Normandy invasion.

Lets not continue down a fruitless path, by claiming that changing strategy means giving up - Give your fellow liberty lovers some credit.

We don't need no steenkeeng third party!

If you want to create a "third party," then call it the "Write-in" party, and simply write in Dr. Paul's name on the ballot, unless the neocon/RINO party or the Commissar haven't banned the write-in vote, or suspended the election entirely!

Freedom is my Worship Word!

Not giving up but...

...when will we know that this delegate strategy is a success? Do we have to wait until the convention? What number is successful? Is success a majority of delegates? A plurality? Second place?

Or to ask Karl Popper's question: What number of delegates would prove that this strategy was not successful? Less than a plurality? Third place? Fourth Place? Less than a 100 total?

In a brokered convention, do we think that Gingrich and Santorum's delegates will decide to support Ron Paul?

If the delegates amassed by Paul get him second place or a plurality, what does Ron Paul get out of it? VP? Treasury? A prime time speech? A plank or two in the platform?

I want him to win but it seems to me he does not get the nomination or win the election through a delegate strategy. I am sure you know more than I do on this. Maybe Romney's folks are not getting as many delegates as the MSM says he is. Maybe most of Gingrich and Santorum's delgates actually really belong to Paul.

Maybe there is a different course that could still be taken. Are there any ads on Radio or TV asking Democrats to become Blue Republicans? Did any of these ads get aired in Virginia, Ohio, or some other state? Are there any Blue Republican ads planned for an upcoming primary? Is there any effort to at least experiment with such ads in one state? How would an explicit appeal for Democrats to crossover vote for Paul endanger the delegate strategy?

I'm not giving up but I do not see this campaign doing what it needs to do to win: deliberately and loudly appeal to progressives by offering a coalition government. Instead, I see a sectarian libertarian fantasy sacrificing the good in a hunt for the perfect.

I have ask a lot of questions here, my friend. I know you can't answer them all but maybe you can answer this one:

What can Ron Paul supporters realistically expect to get from the present delegate strategy on the morning of November 7, 2012?

optimystic's picture

You bring up some good points

We must build coalitions to win the upcoming primaries. Ads to this effect need to be aired by the super-pacs. The phone from home or other calling programs or even robo call programs need to call Democrats and Independents as well as Republicans. In short, all registered voters. That's how we win the national election, this is how we win primaries and delegates. Thanks for your thoughtful post.

To answer some of your questions...

Hey, It sounds like your expressing defeat. It is very dissapointing to not win any state so far, I agree. Paul came in 2nd in 4 states. Thats major. He scored much better than Gingrich even though Gingrich came in first in GA - his home state. In 9 out of 10 states Gingrich came in 3rd and 4th place. This is much worse than Paul. The media will not point this out, but it is VERY newsworthy.

Please do NOT listen to the MSM delegate counts as they are WAY off. They are basing the candidates delegate counts on the straw polls(beauty contests). From having read the numerous comments on here it is clear that Ron Paul is racking up the majority of delegates in most states. People have posted how they stayed late and witnessed that the elected delegates were for Ron Paul. So while the MSM is reporting the delegate count, their count is flat out wrong by a long shot.

Plus please remember that at the convention in Tampa later this year bound delegates are no longer bound after the first or 2nd vote if no candidate recieves a majority(>50%). At this point the delegate becomes unbound and can vote whatever they want. Trust me, we will have MANY delegates become unbound and then vote for Ron Paul. So yes, we cannot know the delegate count until the convention. Whatever the MSM is saying about delegates is pure BS. Its amazing how far they spin it like its fact. This delegate count they are reporting is pure baloney.

And by the way, from what I understand the GOP convention in Tampa is not brokered, its an OPEN convention. If anyone can expand on this please do.

my understanding is that a brokered convention is currently

against the rules of the party and will likely not happen. This is good because in a brokered convention the the party bosses go into a back room and decide who the nominee will be. An open convention, which we will probably have, is the rounds of voting and delegate counting.

My concern is that the MSM will call it for Romney with their phony "delegates to date" count, even before the convention, which would have a major impact on public perception, even though we still have to go to convention to find the real numbers.

Is there a possibility one of the other candidates could drop out and then pledge their delegates to Romney? Would we still have to wait for a vote count at the convention because this is just a "pledge"?

I cannot for the life of me believe that the MSM can constantly call these bogus delegate numbers presented as if they are fact, and no one calls them on it. I understand the campaign's tactic of keeping this a "secret", but I feel that more mainstream folks would be jumping on board if they knew the scoop, and that we were not far behind in the real numbers.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, I'm just well-informed

I'm not an expert on party

I'm not an expert on party rules. But my current impression is that a candidate can release his delegates from their pledge but can only ASK them to vote for his choice as successor.

If his delegates are also his cronies they MAY follow his wishes (perhaps in the hopes of supporting whatever deal he cut and/or paying forward for future favors). But he can't transfer their enforceable pledge to his designee.

= = = =
"Obama’s Economists: ‘Stimulus’ Has Cost $278,000 per Job."

That means: For each job "created or saved" about five were destroyed.

I tell them all the time

Every time i see a delegate count i say in the comments, "You don't know who has how many delegates and you can't know so it's dishonest to say that you do". Or something of the sort.

There's lots of places to do it, especially with Mittens now claiming to have an insurmountable delegate count. So i mean, it's one superficial paper cut in a bloody war but if you help me then it'd be like pouring alcohol on the wound, it'd sting more.

Seriously, they're gonna push this meme and if we don't counter it then it will soon be conventional wisdom.

We shall overcome!

Thanks for the read!

Now THAT

Was an AMAZING read!! I hope every one of Dr Paul's supporters read this article, especially those who may feel weighed down with "implied defeat" by the MSM, Establishment cronies, etc. This was an inspirational read.
