Just became state delegate for Ron Paul in South Dakota yesterday!

Went to my state capital, Pierre yesterday for the regional and state caucuses I am now a state delegate for South Dakota.

Still have yet to see if I go to Tampa but I think there is a good chance I will get to go! I will know more in a day or so and will know absolutely on June 5th! If anyone who reads this in the northern midwest or west coast (Montana, Idaho, Washington, Wyoming, North Dakota etc.) are going to Tampa for the RNC and would like someone to tag along and help pay for gas etc that would be awesome, as I do not have a large supply of funds or a good ride to drive myself there but would have enough to chip in for someone on route. Thank you to anyone who can help. Also there was 18 State delegates elected and (if I remember right) 13 Alternates for Ron Paul from South Dakota but we wont know the exact number of delegates going to Tampa from South Dakota until our June 5th primary.

My advice...

My advice to anyone selected to be a delegate, or even thinking they *might* get selected as a delegate (or an alternate), is to book a room now. There is a 400% markup at hotels in Tampa, and even those are filling up.

There are still reasonable rates just ouside of Tampa, but I'm sure that won't last long.

My state doesn't have their primary until May, and at this point I'm just a committeewoman. I've filled out the paperwork to become a special delegate and the committeemen/women vote those in (my husband is one also). Then in June, if I make special delegate, I will get to vote on the 3 delegates from my county that will get to go to Tampa.

Clear as mud I know.

I can be all three (i.e. committeewoman, special delegate, AND delegate) and of course that's the goal. My husband's goal as well.

I went ahead and booked a room in Wesley Chapel, 30 minutes outside of Tampa, but was recently told that the GOP from my county informed everyone in January (before I signed up) that there are rooms reserved for delegates, and we all have to stay together. I'm a little miffed about it since I have no idea if they reserved the rooms while they were still reasonable or if they expect us to pay a crazy amount.

So far becoming a delegate hasn't been expensive, but it's going to be. It's a $150 filing fee to be a delegate if I'm chosen. Double that if my husband gets selected as well. Well worth it, but I think it's sad if someone ends up dropping out just because they can't afford it.

The way I'm preparing is just planning on being there no matter what. I want to be there for the veteran's march so if I don't get chosen for delegate, it still won't be a wasted trip. It will be incredible, witnessing history.

Also, the RNC is scheduled for August 27-30 (some websites say 31st). I have no idea on which of those days they're actually voting?? I booked the room for 5 nights, just to be safe.

We're already scheduling vacation time, a baby-sitter, etc. There's a lot of preparation that goes into a Tampa trip and I hope everyone that gets chosen as delegate (or even might) is prepared.

Tampa

THey should have a very large block of rooms around the convention for the delegates you have to ask and say your there as a delegate to get the special room rate.

I hug you because I can

and we just might

Saturday is my day

I will be surrounded by neocons....please keep your fingers crossed for me.

thank you to anyone who can help any of us get to Tampa,

thank you to anyone who can help any of us get to Tampa, I will get what I can if I get to go and I WILL make it to Tampa! Also I realize we dont know who will go from the SD RPD but I can dream and well see very soon what is really going to happen, and I agree about the lack of corruption but that voting was very unorganized nobody knew what was going on thought it was a little funny. Also I live in Rapid City/pennington county which is the second largest city/county in the state and have and will be campaigning and canvasing in my area together we can get a good amount of votes and make this happen!

Delegate Selection

Hey truthhope, I tried sending you a message from the contact field on dailypaul, but I don't think it went through....
Anyway, I'm gathering the delegate selection process is over. Does SD have "county conventions." I'm new to the SD political process; moved back from NC where I was Precinct Chairman last three years.

Hi, I'm also a Ron Paul

Hi, I'm also a Ron Paul delegate in SD.

This was just the delegate selection caucuses. Each candidates supporters caucus to vote on who the delegates for their slate is going to be. It's the process by which each candidate selects their delegates that are going to appear on the June 6th ballot.

We still have to get at least 20% in the primary to see how many of our slate gets chosen. So we've still got a lot of work to do. :)

WE got 17% last time though, and were polling 25% a while so we've got a very good shot. But obviously the higher the numbers the better.

awesome!

well done! I hope you will go to Tampa for Dr. Paul!

Corruption? No, none yet...

I too am a delegate from South Dakota and will find out sometime next week ( or Tuesday)if I made it into the top 5 slots for Ron Paul on our June 5th Primary. WHICH IS A CLOSED PRIMARY and WE NEED AT LEAST 20% OF THE VOTE TO GET ANY R.P.D.s TO TAMPA. So this is a CALL to ACTION for any Ron Paul Supporters in: Western and Southwestern Minnesota, Northwest Iowa, Northern Nebraska, Western Wyoming, and Southeastern North Dakota to come to South Dakota as often as you can in the next three months and remind everyone young and old that Ron Paul is still in this!!! Our Most Populated areas (nearly half of the state's electorate) are concentrated between the cities of Sioux Falls and Rapid City but the rural areas are just as important. Anything will help. We got 16.7% of the vote in 2008, but only John McCain and Ron Paul were still technically in the race. With Three still in it by June it will be hard for the win but if we break the threshold we can easily get 8 delegates out of 28 allotted and one of those will be yours truly. Then you may see some corruption before Tampa Bay, Fl. but from what I saw and who i talked to at the Caucus in Ft. Pierre it was mostly disorganized. Due to new and very few party members running it. Only 2 people are counting our votes from yesterday and I met them both. We are a small state but we had our largest showing for the SD Republican Caucus in well over 40 years. (According to a currently sitting Senator) So it will be a Tight Race and we need to Finish Strong.

It's really not very possible

It's really not very possible to be stealth here. We would actually have to have people RUN to be on the Gingrich, or Santorum, or Romney slate.

But we have a good shot at the primary. There recently was a Republican Party straw poll that had us basically in a 3 way tie with Mitt RomneyCare and Santorum, and several months ago they had a poll with us leading at 25% (back when everybody else was in the race.) So As long as we get at least 20%, we'll get an apportioned amount of delegates.

Agreed

I'll be happy to donate as much as possible to assist RP delegates!

Just curious...

How do things look for Ron Paul as far as garnering delegates from South Dakota? Did you see any signs of Party corruption?

Congratulations on becoming a delegate.

Minnesota Mary

Not so much corruption as

Not so much corruption as incompetance. 4 years ago they were very organized. It was very chaotic this time around, and 2 of the people we could have voted in as alternates didn't get on the slate. The Party political director told me he was going to submit their names to the STate chair though because he can appoint them.
