Why are we all so upset when Santorum wins primaries?

Now I understand why you don't like Gingrich or Santorum; obviously you are supporting Ron Paul for a reason. But there is so much outrage when Santorum or Gingrich win states on this site that it really baffles my mind.

The ONLY way Ron Paul can win is if Romney does not get 1144 delegates. And the ONLY way Romney can be blocked from 1144 delegates is if Santorum and Gingrich and Paul continue to take over 50% of the delegates from here forward. That's going to mean a lot of Santorum wins.

Santorum, mathematically, needs 70% of the remaining delegates to win. That won't happen, because Romney has many stronghold states left. However, Romney needs to get 50% of the remaining delegates, which is possible. So instead of being upset when Santorum and Gingrich win states, you should be happy, because it means we're one step closer to winning this election!

Good point.

But he is just such a horrible person.

His votes should be Ron Paul's because only Christians vote for him, and Dr. Paul is the only reasonable choice for a Christian. It makes me sick to see Christians going after him.

Brilliant article that explains why we love Dr. Paul:
http://lewrockwell.com/orig12/farber-r1.1.1.html

Because he is shoving social issues down our throats.

This is not the role of the President or the government to tell people how to live our lives. As long as you are not harming your neighbor, who cares? He is also not a conservative and has voted for the massive gov't spending programs time and again including a what? A bridge... to no where? He pretty much stands and represents everything Ron Paul supporters are fighting against. We are fighting for less gov't, not someone to tell us who to marry and what morals we should have. We already have those documents. They are the Constitution and the Ten Commandments. Oh also, "Because he's a fake"- Ron Paul.

We should also be thankful for Mormans.

Could you imagine if Mitt was Baptist? He'd have this thing locked up by now.

Santorum will sell out

in a heartbeat if offered VP. He talks alot about being principled but "He will take one for the team." His own team as he sees it if offered VP.

You got that right

I think that Santorum probably means "sell out" in some language.

My God.

This means Glenn Beck is a genius.

Santorum delegates

I hope that some people here are actually becoming Santorum delegates, especially if they are pro-life (and thus have a valid reason to support Santorum as against Romney). They could support Santorum on the first ballot (or abstain if by some miracle Saint Orum was close to 1144 delegates) and then vote for Paul after that.

Santorum for now

is just a necessary evil.
Paul wins in the end!

Gold standard: because man can not be trusted to control his greed

This is a silly question, but it keeps me up at night . . .

Can anyone tell me, heading into the convention, how much control Santorum would actually have over his delegates? For example, do we have to worry about him giving in at the convention, and cutting a deal with Romney by handing over his delegates in exchange for being Mitt's running mate?

Between Mitt and Santorum, I'm guessing that between the two of them, there would be at least 1144 delegates. Does any candidate have that kind of control over their delegates, or would enough be unbound to prevent such a deal?

Don't think so

From my understanding (and I could be wrong), candidates can no longer barter with delegates. For example, if Romney cuts a deal with santorum for Santorum to become VP, there is no guarantee Santorum's delegates are going to vote for that ticket. They can go ahead and vote for who ever they want. I could be mistaken though.

I was not

the least bit upset, For me this was completely expected and it worked even better then I thought. The best outcome now is for all the delegates to be split equal that way we for sure have a brokered convention.

Good article you got the right thinking :)

Because he's a despicable

Because he's a despicable human being who is absolutely unacceptable as president?

You're so right

I commented on another thread that Paul needs to go after Romney. If Santorum and Gingrich drop out the MSM will declare Romney to be the nominee elect and coverage of the election would cease. It happened in 2008 with Hucklebee still in the Race, Rasmussen even stopped polling primary states and ran a daily McCain v. Obama poll. The hard core RP voters like us would come out but others would think Romney had already won and stay home. After each state it'd be harder and harder to win. There is another danger for those of us in NY that you might not be aware of.When April 24 rolls around if Romney looks inevitable there is an Archaic rule RP supporters need to know about. If a certain percent of GOP district leaders agree on one candidate they can cancel the primary. It is then incumbent on the opposition candidate to get thousands of names in each district to get on the ballot.Sen D'Amato pulled this in 1996.You only had Buchanan going against President Bush. Pat was also status non gratis with the establishment. They won't dare do this now if Santorum is in contention but you and I know They'd cut Paul out in a heart beat. And I want my chance to vote.

I'm barely ever upset when that happens

Worse:

instead, that leaves me speechless and almost emptied.

Like a violent punch in the chest.

Always.

I agree. We need Santorum and

I agree. We need Santorum and Gingrich to stay in to take away from Romney.

Indeed

A colleague of mine who is a died-in-the-wook Georgia boy, loves him some Newt. He isn't dismayed at all that Newt's not giving in...I didn't have the heart to tell him that I'm happy to have Newt string this thing out, but for Ron's benefit only.

He'll get it soon enough, when he realizes the GOP can't win without the Ron Paul supporters - and you all know what that means. Ron Paul or none at all.

My sentiments exactly

Just as the Santorum & Gingrich supporters were plenty happy to see Ron Paul take some Virginia delegates.

The irony is, Newt's delegate count after the first round at the convention will be nearly 0. I don't think his supporters realize that.

The BEST of all outcomes, is that Newt Gingrich + Mitt Romney delegates does not equal 1,144 or greater in the first round, in case they cut a deal straight away.

The best way for that NOT to happen, is for Santorum to stay on a roll.

Agree with strategic value of Santorum's wins

The evangelicals are sheepishly falling in behind Santorum. Their herd behavior is a gift to the Paul campaign. And, Mitt will not allow Santorum to get 70% of the remaining delegates. Voters don't realize that Santorum is either a political pawn or a cosmic instrument. He is highly unlikely to win.

"cosmic instrument"

oh the irony

Best Way to Describe My Feelings When Frothy Wins

Pragmatically pleased. Appalled on principle.

"The casualty of partisanship is objectivity."

Perfectly Said

I feel the exact same way (and I'm certain we're not alone on that!)

You got it.

Appalled on principle.

Not upset. It's good.

Not upset. It's good.

Good calculations and...

you are right that we should be upset only when Romney wins, but should be ok with newt or santorum wins as that comes closer to a conservative winning the nomination versus a far left liberal like romney.

jj

At least Republicans, as misguided as they are...

aren't buying Romney's bullshit. While I find Santorum disgusting, I find Romney even more disgusting in how he attempts to win people over with "I can beat Obama" not "I will stand for our (crazy) values."

Romney carpetbombed Ohio with ads for weeks leading up to the primary, yet he barely beat Santorum. Same thing in his home state.

I can't stand (and wouldn't vote for) either of the two, but at least Rick Santorum is winning without simply dumping money... this may be one of the 5% of times when money DOESN'T win an election.

Lots of Santorum voters might

Lots of Santorum voters might also be Democrats, he has really no chance against Obama.
And this is why they want him to be the nominee.

Of course he also has the anti-Romney crowd.

Because...

Because it seriously hurts my faith in Americans. Santorum is a terrible man, a terrible politician, just a horrendous human being in my opinion. The fact that so many Americans are voting for him depresses me.

On the other hand, when he wins, it improves the odds of a brokered convention which is the way Ron Paul will become our next president. So that's good.

What I find hilarious today

is all of the news people trying to give Romney new strategies on winning and what he needs to do to win and why can't he connect and he is trying too hard and blah, blah blah. They are stunned that Frothy won and are upset because now they are going to have to start all over again and re-write the script.

As I am writing this, Chris Matthews is asking about Romney, "Can he be a SOULFUL Republican?" Gag!

Because we' d rather see Ron Paul winning primaries
