To Ron Paul Supporters

The song presented herein is titled To Ramona by Bob Dylan. After thinking deeply about the title at around 4:20 one afternoon, I came to the conclusion that it is an anagram for "To a man or ..." (a woman, being the obvious implication),' i.e. to the human race. The lyrics address the human condition so presciently, and on this fine Friday, I direct their attention to Ron Paul supporters everywhere.

Since the original by Dylan is unavailable on YouTube, here is the best cover available - and it is even better, in its own way - by Sinéad Lohan. Lyrics below the break, and well worth pondering, especially on a Friday, late afternoon...

Ramona
Come closer
Shut softly your watery eyes
The pangs of your sadness
Shall pass as your senses will rise

The flowers of the city
Though breathlike
Get deathlike at times
And there’s no use in tryin’
T’ deal with the dyin’
Though I cannot explain that in lines

Your cracked country lips
I still wish to kiss
As to be by strength of your skin
Your magnetic movements
Still capture the minutes I’m in

But it grieves my heart, love
To see you tryin’ to be a part of
A world that just don’t exist
It’s all just a dream, babe
A vacuum, a scheme, babe
That sucks you into feelin’ like this

I can see that your head
Has been twisted and fed
By worthless foam from the mouth
I can tell you are torn
Between stayin’ and returnin’
On back to the South

You’ve been fooled into thinking
That the finishin’ end is at hand
Yet there’s no one to beat you
No one t’ defeat you
’Cept the thoughts of yourself feeling bad

I’ve heard you say many times
That you’re better ’n no one
And no one is better ’n you
If you really believe that
You know you got
Nothing to win and nothing to lose!

From fixtures and forces and friends
Your sorrow does stem
That hype you and type you
Making you feel
That you gotta be just like them

I’d forever talk to you
But soon my words
They would turn into a meaningless ring
For deep in my heart
I know there is no help I can bring

Everything passes
Everything changes
Just do what you think you should do
And someday maybe
Who knows, baby
I’ll come and be cryin’ to you

Gotte Serve Somebody

You may be an ambassador to England or France
You may like to gamble, you might like to dance
You may be the heavyweight champion of the world
You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls

But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody

You might be a rock ’n’ roll addict prancing on the stage
You might have drugs at your command, women in a cage
You may be a businessman or some high-degree thief
They may call you Doctor or they may call you Chief

But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody

You may be a state trooper, you might be a young Turk
You may be the head of some big TV network
You may be rich or poor, you may be blind or lame
You may be living in another country under another name

But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody

You may be a construction worker working on a home
You may be living in a mansion or you might live in a dome
You might own guns and you might even own tanks
You might be somebody’s landlord, you might even own banks

But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody

You may be a preacher with your spiritual pride
You may be a city councilman taking bribes on the side
You may be workin’ in a barbershop, you may know how to cut hair
You may be somebody’s mistress, may be somebody’s heir

But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody

Might like to wear cotton, might like to wear silk
Might like to drink whiskey, might like to drink milk
You might like to eat caviar, you might like to eat bread
You may be sleeping on the floor, sleeping in a king-sized bed

But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody

You may call me Terry, you may call me Timmy
You may call me Bobby, you may call me Zimmy
You may call me R.J., you may call me Ray
You may call me anything but no matter what you say

You’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody

Right now, I'm serving Ron Paul rEVOLution in the GOP. Ron Paul is MY political leader and who I'm PROUD to SERVE, and only Jesus, My LORD and SAVIOR, WHO IS THE HIGHEST can sway me to serve in another direction, with or witrhout Ron Paul.

Wow, I still love Dylan after all these years...

bought my first Dylan album in 1963. Nobody EVER wrote better anti-war songs.

P.S. I'm Jewish and I too am proud to serve RP and my Higher Power. Beautiful sentiments, Granger.

Thank you belle

My very best friend is Jewish. I have attended many Jewish services in many temples/synagogs, including Orthodox, where I held the Torah. I learned to read and write a little Hebrew, and speak a little Yiddish, and since I enjoyed Sedar and Hannukka, I wound up making the dinners, either brisket or roasted lamb, charoset, kugle, blintzes, latkes and a mean chicken pot that includes the feet, with kreplach and wonderful fat and fluffy matza balls, and oh yeah, speaking of Matza, I make a wonderful orange matza chiffon cake and mandlebrot too.

My friends parents thought I would like to be Jewish/Reform because I love so mach about the religion. I would go to services with them and without my friend. But, I was baptized Catholic, and though I was not raised Cathlic, something told me I had a calling there.

I was confirmed and took first communion last year. What I foud rather odd, is how many Catholics claim to be Jews. And what's interesting is how many Catholic were Jews. My friend is converting to Catholic now. We have a big difference now too. I want to go to Israel. He doesn't. Many people in his family have gone and lived and served and returned with horror stories. But I would like to walk that new trail that opened, a pilgramage trail AKA The Gospel Trail. And I would like to eat there and see Mt Sinai and all those places in the Torah and Bible.

Another thing I think is interesting is I've heard that Christians blame Jews for Jesus' death, and I find that is not true in the Catholic Church today, which has it's own problems, like the entire human race.

I hope one year to make a Sedar dinner for my Parrish. Some oppose saying, "They are not believers and it would be sacrireligious. But I don't agree. I Thank Jesus for saying ALL people are chosen, but the ones who are saved, go through him, because God is too great for us, beyond our ability to reason.

Again, I think you for the kind words, and opportunity to water my thoughts with great food, while I am fasting for Lent. LOL

Peace be with you. AKA Shalom

Love Dylan, Love this Song

But applying it to Ron Paul is a bit of a stretch. Can't we have better filters for posts here on DP?I mean its not even one of Dylan's political songs...

You do realize

This poster is THE DailyPaul himself, Michael Nystrom. He can post what he wants and I don't really see Ron Paul in the song either. But, nice song.

The lip of truth shall be established forever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment...Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are His delight. Prov 12:19,22

I don't think he was saying

I don't think he was saying it had anything to do with Ron Paul. It is pointing out certain aspects of the human condition.

If you listen to the Dylan version, it will be much clearer. The difference is like being caressed by velvet vs knives . . . my wife wanted to pumch Dylan after listening to his version.

The version posted is great to listen to, but it doesn't say the same thing. It is more in line with the Greek Sirens entising the sailors to their destruction. :)

Michael Nystrom's picture

That is interesting

So, what is this doing here on the front page of the Daily Paul?

I was on another thread somewhere last night, talking about something. Forget exactly what or where now, but people were trying to tell people what to do. I just hate it when that happens, and it reminded me of the coda that I had with my friends in my early 20's, which was: "Everyone should do what they want to do." (In response to when people were trying to get you to do something you didn't want to). We were libertarians without knowing it.

Anyway, that phrase got me thinking of one of the final verses in the song: "Everything passes, everything changes, just do what you think you should do..."

It is a powerful line, and I got to listening to the whole song, which I hadn't listened to in a while. And the lyrics blew me away again. I think they're relevant to what we're going through now as a movement, especially the whole second half of the song. I couldn't find a Dylan version on YouTube, and this was the best cover.

That is all. Over and out.

ATK Awarded Contract to Supply 450 Million Rounds of .40 Caliber Ammunition to the Department of Homeland Security.

The 1 year contract with four option years comes at a time when many Americans believe that DHS, along with certain aspects of the military, Will Soon Turn Their Sights On The American People During Some Sort of Martial Law Scenario.

DHS Seems To Be –Actively Working– Against the American People On Every Front.

Considering This, The Fact That They Are –Openly Ordering Millions– More Rounds Of Ammunition Should At The Very Least Give The American People Pause.

It would be nice if Ron Paul supporters would be sensitive to the fact that 4:20 is code for marijuana (since it is the criminal code related to marijuana that police use when reporting crimes), and it might be beneficial to avoid it's use when it's not necessary.. When you say you were thinking about the title "at around 4:20" it gives the impression that you were thinking about the title while smoking pot. I don't think flaunting that sort of thing helps the campaign.. But of course it could just be a coincidence that you used that number.. I'm just saying it would be nice if we would avoid it if possible. There are already too many people who don't take Ron Paul seriously because they think he is the legalize drugs candidate, when I don't think that is entirely true; I think he is more focused on moving authority from federal to the state, and removing unjust penalties for non-violent crimes.

Ron Paul doesn't avoid it, so

Ron Paul doesn't avoid it, so gimme a break.

i noticed the reference to

i noticed the reference to 4:20.

and i had no problem with it whatsoever.

The slogan press on has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race. No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.

Excellent one

He's the man.

Sometimes we overlook

the compassion of Dylan; how tuned in he was to the human condition. Even "Masters of War", so full of anger as he lashes out at the PTB is, in many ways, compassionate.

Thanks for sharing Michael.

And now that I've praised him, he will, of course, endorse a Rino or OBomber.

And another favorite Dylan quote--

"My favorite politician was Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater, who reminded me of Tom Mix, and there wasn't any way to explain that to anybody. I wasn't that comfortable with all the psycho polemic babble."

Nice!

Always one of my favorite Dylan songs

And thanks for posting. The lyrics always had a resonance for me that I couldn't quite put my finger on, and Dylan's vocal added to the "texture" of the song itself.

Anyway, some of us Boomers I'm sure appreciate your post.

Spendid.

There's a whole treasure trove of Bob Dylan "libertarian" songs in his song book. Stop the wars. Stop the greed. Let people live. One lyric kind of sums it all up, from the "Gotta Serve Somebody" album: "We've got lawbreakers makin' all the rules".

I can only wonder why some of the old school anti war/establishment singers don't come out in support for Ron Paul. He's the clear choice, yet no celebrities lend him a helping hand. Sad opportuninty to really make a difference, gone.

Oh yes indeed you gotta serve somebody

Well it may be the devil, or it may be the Lord, but you're gonna have to serve somebody
(serve someone).

Another one I love from that era, with particular resonance to today is Slow Train Coming.

That slow train been coming ever since he wrote that song back in '79. It is still coming. That was back in his born again phase, and some great stuff came out of that period.

Sometimes I feel so low-down and disgusted
Can't help but wonder what's happening to my companions
Are they lost or are they found, have they counted the cost it'll take to bring down
All their earthly principles they're gonna have to abandon ?
There's slow, slow train coming up around the bend.

He's got a line about Jefferson rolling over in his grave in that one, too:

Man's ego is inflated, his laws are outdated, they don't apply no more
You can't rely no more to be standing around waiting
In the home of the brave, Jefferson turning over in his grave
Fools glorifying themselves, trying to manipulate Satan
And there's slow, slow train coming up around the bend.

Big-time negotiators, false healers and woman haters
Masters of the bluff and masters of the proposition
But the enemy I see wears a cloak of decency
All non-believers and men stealers talking in the name of religion
And there's slow, there's slow train coming up around the bend.

Man! What a storyteller he was in his prime!

Yep! You Can't Ride Two Horses and You Can't Be Half Pregnant..

Does that many any cents?

She and my dad are from the same neighborhood around Cork

Perfect song for RP supporters and I love both versions.

Just curious, does the time

Just curious, does the time carry any significance? LOL

Yes

It is a number associated with Pot. 420 is used in a positive manner in most cases. Here is the wikipedia link:

This was written during the midst of the Vietnam protests

We could do with reviving that anti war sentiment, but Obama's election dampened it all down.

"In the end, more than they wanted freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all -- security, comfort, and freedom. When ... the freedom they wished for was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free."

Wow

That was powerful. Of course I had heard that CCR song before, on the radio, but I never knew what it meant. The lyrics were just a jumble that I never could make out, and never bothered to look up.

This verse reminds me of Gingrich:

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooo, they send you down to war, y’all.
And when you ask them, how much should we give?
Ooo, they only answer more! More! More! Y’all.

Thanks man.

Yeah, how do we revive the anti-war sentiment? Back in the 60's the draft hung like a specter. The pictures were on TV. Now the government's gone and hid it all so well.

War? What war? Who would ever know?

He's the man.

Reminds me more of Romney

(Governor but same difference)

"In the end, more than they wanted freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all -- security, comfort, and freedom. When ... the freedom they wished for was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free."

Thanks so much Michael

This was so very enjoyable - I had never heard Lohan's version of this song.
It's a keeper.

Gotta love Bob Dylan he's one

Gotta love Bob Dylan he's one of the few greats. Some might like this tune also, although it's not by Dylan.
