Tom Mullen in the Washington Times: Ron Paul Strategy is Authentic Republicanism

by Tom Mullen | Washington Times

TAMPA, March 19, 2012 – Give yourself a test. Without doing a web search or whipping out that pocket U.S. Constitution that a wild-eyed Tea Partier handed you, fill in the blank in the following sentence: The U.S. Constitution guarantees to every state in the union a _____form of government.

If you are like ninety percent of the American electorate, you answered “democratic” and you were wrong. The answer is “a republican form of government.” There is a drastic difference between the two and one would think that the Republican Party would know it. Instead, they are identical to their rivals in not only ignoring the distinction but promoting democracy instead.

In a democracy, the will of the majority is the law. Fifty-one percent of the vote empowers the winners to exercise any power they wish. Not so in a republic. The reason the founders constructed a constitutional republic was to protect Americans from democracy.

This is awesome!!

Learn something new everyday, this is a breath of fresh air!

Paul should use this in interviews when asked why he tends to focus more on caucus states!

Say because it is what the republic was designed to be!

I've heard reporters at caucuses saying "this is Democracy in action"

I thought they were telling the truth, boy was i wrong!!
This is blowing my mind, no wonder Paul only concentrates on caucus states, the primaries are liberal! haha

Very informative and well written. Great job :)

Thanks, friends

for all of the support on this article and the others that have appeared on "mainstream" sites for the past several weeks. The way to ensure that these ideas keep getting heard, whether written by me or others, is to visit the sites, leave comments, and vote them up.

I have to say that the editors of three very high volume sites, The Daily Caller, The Huffington Post, and the Washington Times have been very gracious and generous with the space. They have not hesitated to give these ideas a fair hearing and it wouldn't hurt to let them know you appreciate it!

Of course, the Daily Paul will always be my home. :)

Awesome. and I totally rocked that question at the beginning. ;)

Tom: I assume you must visit this site because you're clearly intelligent and love freedom, thus you visit the DP several times a day. ;) So, Tom, THANK YOU!

Excellent article.

Agree..bookmark...done / print...done / share...done.

I almost wish it did not have Ron Paul's name in the headline because it is a great article and I don't want people to not read it because they are not a supporter of his and so they think why bother. But then again things are what they are suppose to be and we just all have to keep at it.

That's CORRECT! Great article!

Bush was about as republican as Obama is.

But that's no surprise since the 2-party hijacking of our political system.

Together they actually have turned us into a democracy.

Designed to steal from some and give to others.

The most egregious act is that the United States government has the NERVE to tax us to death AND THEN GIVE OUT BILLIONS UPON BILLIONS IN FOREIGN AID!

At least domestic welfare STAYS in this country and gets spent on OUR economy.

But constitutionally, foreign aid is extremely disturbing.

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."
-Ron Paul

The article is fantastic!

This is one of the best articles I've read in a while. I particularly like how he demonstrates that there is little difference between Democrats and Republicans - both are essentially power-hungry!

When the American spirit was in its youth, the language of America was different: Liberty, sir, was the primary object. - Patrick Henry

Agreed. Same here. Excellent.

Awesome as always Tom!

Tyranny's best friend is Liberty not served.

+Very Nice Tom

thanks..

Great article

Tom. Thanks.

It's a great one to share.

I get asked the question "Why is Ron Paul running as a Republican" more than once.

Ron Paul is My President

Wow

What a great article! It's about time.
I read things like this and feel so happy that I've finally woken up from that deep sleep called apathy and feel so lucky that there's a real statesman to support.

If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy.
James Madison

This video explains it very well

Many here have seen this, but if not, check it out. I think its the best short video ever done on the American form of government.

thanks should be seen by everyone

and its the reason why we fight to take over the GOP! and why 3rd partys like the green party makes no sense.
2 are already enough and probably one too many.

Wow, an article from a major news source...

that didn't say one bad thing about Paul. Too great.

Check out this link from the CSMonitor that I just posted:

Although not as uniformly glowing in support, it raised a lot of great points about the RP Revolution.

With liberty and justice for all...who can afford it.

Front Page!

Great Article, Mr. Mullen.

Did anyone notice that the article has one inaccuracy which is a Freudian slip in form of wishful thinking? It's the following line:

"He [Paul] is the only Republican PRESIDENT that has actually said the words 'role of government' during any debate."

"Air is the very substance of our freedom, the substance of superhuman joy....aerial joy is freedom."--Gaston Bachelard--

WOW

great article, one of the best i have read in a while. " You don’t turn $1.5 trillion deficits into surpluses by tweaking the way that federal departments are managed. You do so by completely eliminating departments and redefining the role of government." ---sooooooo trueeee

This is a great piece!

This is a great piece! Fabulous!!

Immoral funding of Military Industrial Complex by Federal Reserve and US taxation system must stop!!!! End illegal/unconstitutional wars! Preserve US currency!

United Sates of America is a republic

I have always known this. However, that fact has nothing to do with political parties in the United States. Obama also had a caucus and delegate strategy. "Democrats" hold caucuses too. Also, every state has 2 Senators which also keeps it from being a democracy.

Very nice article. It is not often we get to read thoughtful pieces. I do appreciate the need to reassess the role of government so I am glad it was addressed here. We often add things and then never look back as to whether they did what they were intended to do.

BOOM! It's Outta Here!

Another home run for Tom Mullen!!!!

This article is EXACTLY the right thing to say at EXACTLY the right time...perfect in so many ways.

You know our folks are gonna come under undue scrutiny for the RP approach to the delegates...the MSM will spin it all anti-clockwise, that is sure. "It's unfair...democracy rules...what about the popular vote?...you're stealing delegates" and on and on...

But this article takes the moral and ideological high ground in advance, from both the MSM and those in the GOP who would negatively criticize Ron's delegate strategy.

Thanks for the intellectual ammunition, Tom!!!!!!!

thumbs up

great article. an enjoyable and quick read.

Very well written

Well worth the short read.
I like his summary of D vs R:
"Conservatism at its best protects property rights from an unchecked majority plundering the individual. Liberalism at its best protects property rights from the wealthy conspiring with the government to plunder the masses. At their worst, both conservatism and liberalism legitimize plunder; the former for the few, the latter for the many."

Thats straight Bastiat!

Tremendous article.
