Rep. Justin Amash Votes "NO" on Paul Ryan's Budget

Rep. Justin Amash:

I have a lot of respect for Chairman Paul Ryan and his outstanding staff. They worked tirelessly to put together a budget that was, in most respects, better than last year's budget. The FY 2013 Budget Resolution, which just passed the House Budget Committee, addresses the fundamental drivers of our massive federal debt.

Today's committee vote was one of the most difficult of my life. Ultimately, I voted "no" for a few basic reasons:

(1) The time to balance is too long. According to CBO, the budget won't reach balance until nearly 2040. Under an alternative growth scenario, it still might be unbalanced until the mid-2020s.

(2) The budget exempts military spending from reductions, which makes it more difficult to achieve bipartisan support to reform the primary components of our annual deficit: Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

(3) The FY 2013 cuts do not appear to match the magnitude of the cuts required under the post-sequester Budget Control Act, which most Republicans and Democrats agreed to in exchange for raising the debt ceiling. I did not support the BCA (raising the debt ceiling) because I believed the parties were making a political compromise—promising future cuts that would not happen—rather than a genuine compromise to deal with the debt immediately.

Here's what I wrote after voting against the BCA in August 2011: http://www.mlive.com/opinion/grand-r...t_ceiling.html.

I think Justin would still be

I think Justin would still be too young for 2016...but possibly 2020. But that's the future. We really need to make sure he has our support for his re-election.

I Love You!

You are my choice for Speaker of the House! The one we have is a total fraud!

I'm at the National Republican Congressional Committee March Dinner. Weird--the guy who wants to indefinitely detain American citizens without charge or trial has a better seat than me.

I heard today that the guy who wants to indefinitely detain American citizens without charge or trial did not like my status update from Tuesday.

Way to go Rep. Amash!

I've said it repeatedly but it's worth repeating: The torch has been passed in the House and Justin Amash was clearly the ready, willing, and able recipient.

We need to keep him in Congress for as long as he wants to be.

We also need to get Dr. Murray Sabrin, Dr. B.J. Lawson, Dr. Thomas Woods (could you imagine the debates?), Dr. Edwin Vieira (I don't think he has ever mentioned having political aspirations, but one can dream), Adam Kokesh, and Karen Kwiatkowski to join Rep. Amash and Sen. Paul in D.C.

This could be fun and, more importantly for me, informative ... everyone list some patriots--capable of handling themselves in debates--that you'd like to see in Congress (either house). We should do as much for these folks as we did to get Rand elected.

How cool would it be if we could draft Tom Woods to run for office? I actually smile ear-to-ear just thinking about the debates. Dr. Woods would destroy pretty much anyone in a debate. Not only with his intellect and depth of knowledge and understanding of historical and economic matters but also with his wit. He's very funny and charming, as we all know and people eat that stuff up. He'd actually have to intentionally hold back quite a bit or he might get the audience to feel sorry for his opponent(s). lol

Good job, Justin!

Why can't I have a Congressman like Justin Amash? It doesn't matter if I always agree with him or not, just the fact he explains all of his votes on his Facebook page is awesome, and reason enough to respect him. That he endorses the good Doctor make him a champion in my eyes. We need more Justin Amash's in Congress!
