Couple of my campaign contributions don't show up in FEC queries

Hi all, me & my wife made some campaign contributions in one of the earlier moneybombs. (It was the Black this out money-bomb from around Oct. 18-20, 2011.) I got expected emails from the campaign with transaction IDs, dollar amounts, timestamps etc. confirming these donations. They also appeared exactly as expected on the credit card statements.

However when I query for them at following link, there is NO TRACE of them anywhere in the listings.

http://www.fec.gov/finance/disclosure/advindsea.shtml

We again made few other contributions after those dates (in Nov/Dec 2011 & Jan. 2012), and they ALL show up as expected in FEC reports. This seems fishy & I was wondering if anyone else has had similar experience. If FEC doesn't think I made those contributions but campaign tells me I did, campaign didn't report it to FEC?! What could have the campaign done with that money?!?! According to FEC website, their information is supposed to be up-to-date very quickly - like in a matter of hours.

Another complication due to such mismatch: According to my calculations, including those "untracked" contributions I maxed out to the Federal limit. However since FEC isn't aware of some contributions, does it mean if I make even more contributions, they will be accepted? I don't want to attempt to do something like that, if it's considered funny business - breaking election laws/whatever.

Like I said, this mysterious unaccounted contribution has made me very uneasy & looking to find out if anyone else has similar experience. Thanks!

Spoke personally with someone

Spoke personally with someone at the campaign. For some weird reason, much later contributions from Nov. 2011 to Jan. 2012 have already been submitted. But donations from Oct. 2011 have not yet been submitted. They'll be reported in next quarter.

I have no idea why order of reporting is strange like this, not in sync with actual donation order. But it's assuring my donations are all tracked properly.

Time

Maybe it takes a few months for them to get posted. None of my contributions are on there, but I didn't donate till last month (when I "discovered" RP). See if it shows up come May, because my guess is that is about when it might. They might also only report them on a quarterly basis in which case, again, just give it some time.

WOW! This really has me thinking.

I have to go back to my records and verify this for myself.

I hope this goes VIRAL until the issue is resolved!

For what it's worth, sent a msg to campaign thru their website/contact-me to get back to me urgently. Will also call later Tuesday when their office opens.

My big concern is: If there are FEC reporting discrepancies, it could cause big downstream headaches, invite FEC audits etc. This has to get resolved quickly. I'll try updating thread for benefit of others based on what I find out.

Often campaigns dont report individual contributions under 200

The FEC only requires 200 or more to be identified and called out individually.

Chill, it's fine.

These are NOT under 200, so

These are NOT under 200, so no - I can't just chill. It's a legitimate cause for concern.

Also, as an aside: I've seen small amounts like $50 being reported through FEC queries.

And there's more. If you look at this link:

http://www.fec.gov/pages/brochures/fecfeca.shtml

it says:

Candidates must identify, for example, all PACs and party committees that give them contributions, and they must identify individuals who give them more than $200 in an election cycle.

So the official line is "more than $200" NOT "$200 or more". Out of curiosity - If the amount for entire election cycle is EXACTLY $200.00, campaign NOT required to report it - Correct?

A related observation based on some "less than 200" entries in FEC listings. The key wording above is "more than $200 IN AN ELECTION CYCLE". NOT "more than $200 IN A SPECIFIC CONTRIBUTION". So consider following hypothetical scenario.

Someone makes donation of exact $200 for first time ever in election cycle. It doesn't cross disclosure limit, so not reported to FEC & doesn't show in query. Next day, the same person makes a contribution of only $1. Now, "more than $200 in election cycle" is true. So that little $1 may get reported as such. This might explain why FEC queries are showing little amounts like $50 in their listings.

At this point, these are only hypotheses of mine; but pretty weird.
