CNN DISTORTING RON PAUL’S VOICE!!
CNN DISTORTING RON PAUL’S VOICE!!
Listen to these three consecutive times where Ron Paul has appeared on CNN and had “wobbly voice” sound problems. The first video I noticed this on I thought it was probably coincidental, being some kind of technical problem. What stood out about it though was that this only occurred when Ron Paul was speaking, it wasn’t present in the interview with Joe Biden or with the CNN presenter's segments, both before and after Ron Paul’s parts. Here’s the first video, Paul comes in after the interview with Joe Biden:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZ86O1ou91o
After I saw this “wobbly voice” sound problem reoccur twice then I became suspicious that CNN may have been deliberately trying to make Ron Paul sound strange and unattractive to the audience. Here’s the second video with an interview between Ron Paul and a woman in the CNN studio, notice that the female presenter’s audio feed is normal while only Ron Paul’s is suffering from exactly the same “wobbly voice technicality” as in the first video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SRyNxdQSdw
Here in the third video we can hear exactly same sound problem again, with the interviewer and Ron Paul both sharing the same audio feed and so both having their voices distorted:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-mQQ6rJA7I
WHY does this “sound problem” seem to follow Ron Paul around when he’s on CNN? I am not condemning CNN as a whole here as the Wolf Blitzer appearances have been fantastic and very fair. But this does seem to be a legitimate concern regardless considering the mainstream media’s (and the establishment who it represents) clear bias against Ron Paul and desperation to sideline him.

To me it sounds like Auto Tune
My wife is a DJ online, and pointed it out to me as we were watching one of the feeds that was later made into a clip. She showed me how it was done, I was pissed for a bit, then figured that we knew they were against us anyways, so it wasn't exactly a news flash.

poor compression
it's simply poor compression from those converting the video's to a youtube compatible video. it can happen with
1) audio
2) video
3) or both at the same time.
there are many many reasons why this could happen.
1) fox satellite has trouble decrypting the signal (signal loss = compression when a feed is trying to catch up to current time. if that happens constantly over milliseconds you can get the same effect)
2) home compression of youtube user
3) uploading compression by youtube (youtube further compresses videos so if it's really bad compression to begin with it will be horrible compression by the time youtube finishes uploading) so this again can be related to #2 but youtube compounds the problem.
4) fox henchmen purposefully doing this
In order for a henchmen to do this the following requirements would have to be met:
1) it was actually part of the original broadcast
2) only ron pauls voice was glitched
I could clearly hear the reporters voices being glitched as well. My best guess and most logical explanation is nothing more than a technical issue with the compression of the video by the user that uploaded it.
We know the media is against us...
So what's new? Get over it.
If we supporters would spend half the time and energy spreading the message in an intelligent way rather than focusing on the media's lack of attention and hypothesizing about conspiracies (real or not), we would be a lot better off.
My $.02
True... are these ?'s to seperate the wheat and chaff?
Dear Fellow Patriots,
I am glad someone else with 'golden ears' latched on to this too.. That in these instances there has been a systematic, repeated, and intentional use of pitch modulation by CNN to undermine Dr. Paul's likeness before the public is without a doubt. The evidence is very plain and simple, and anyone familiar with the most basic modern recording techniques and editing practice knows how it is done. The 'artifacts from compression/bandwidth theory" posted below is untenable, as again, it was documented on numerous isolated occasions. And again, anyone with even a cursory knowledge of compression knows that it can not cause of that type frequency or pitch modulation. This is intentional manipulation, and a student of the media will know of plenty of other similar trick used in the golden days of the press, in print, photo or otherwise, to subtly distort someone they do not like.
This, like the other attacks on Dr Paul have some benefit for US ; Blowback is the same truth, and as absolute and immutable a law, as is Newton's law of action and reaction. Assuming this is all intentional, as the evidence plainly shows, I would bet a few of the less sympathetic and disparaging posters below are probably from the other camps, so issues like this can help us identify "unfriendlies" attempting to chime in on our posts..!
So can we start this massive media boycott promotion now, or what? Should we wait just a little longer to collect more evidence?
..
.
this is stupid
this is not evidence of conspiracy. ron paul has a warbly voice. i've done audio media, its tough to mix that kind of voice, especially live.
A wobbly voice, Seriously?
For some of you there just has to be a conspiracy in everything. If it were a conspiracy (which its NOT) what would they possibly be trying to achieve by "supposedly" deliberately trying to wobble his voice? It probably has something to do with area 51 or those damn Leprechauns.
Raw Story's slightly higher
Raw Story's slightly higher quality version of one of the videos has the same sound issue when RP speaks:
http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Ron_Paul_Fox_News_will_suffer_...
It does look like the CNN feed and not web compression at least.
OK, so let's say they are doing this on purpose. Can we
Ron Paul for President!!!
For arguements sake let's say they are doing this on purpose. Can we take the same video off of youtube and fix them? If we can, Then you audio engineers need to do this and put something like it has been fixed or something so paul supporters know what video to go to!
Ummm... why exactly should
Ummm... why exactly should this thread be deleted ? We are discussing, with a healthy margin for disagreement, the technical method (albeit not well known to the general public) by which viewers "gut" perceptions can easily be manipulated. I and the audio engineer have given specific examples of avaiable technology that can accomplish this goal. Can you give us a coherent explanation of why this ought not be of concern, or at least more than passing interest ?
If RP is consistently being made to look strange, or sound somehow alien or outlandish, and that starts to seem to a number of people like the norm for the way the MSM portrays him, we'd be less that intelligent if we didn't begin to wonder why that was...
FWIW... Eventide setting #322, I think, is called the "drunken sailor" effect, it makes the speaker sound unstable and intoxicated... at the touch of a button...
This is a sound compression artifact
You can notice that their voices only sound weird when CNN relays the video feed from a remote location, outside their studio. This feed is digitally compressed, and in order to get good compression rates (and save bandwidth) they trade video and audio quality. You can notice the frame rate also suffers, and there's a lag between the studio and Ron Paul.
(I'm an electrical engineering grad student, and I do my research in the field of digital signal processing)
I also know a bit about
CNN does live feeds all the time but yet I've never heard such voice distortion like that before, and three times in a row this same problem happens only for RP?
I also know a bit about web compression at least and although there is a big quality drop when youtube convert and compress files into flv (flash) that lower resolution is constant, not selective. The audio for the presenter and Biden for example in the first video does not have the same level of degradation at all, it's only RP's audio that's affected. You can't argue therefore that this is a web compression issue based on the fact that the points where this sound distortion becomes noticeable are specific to only when Ron Paul speaks. The second interview with the presenter in the studio is where this really stands out the most, her voice sounds fine but RP's voice is clearly distorted.
These are all compression artifacts
In the first clip they show a speech that's compressed half way to death. The audio and video show artifacts.
This isn't due to web compression, and in particular it's not due to Youtube's lossy algorithms. It's because of the heavy compression that CNN uses in their own remote video feeds. Maybe if they thought Ron Paul was more important, they'd bump up the quality (and pay the price for a higher bandwidth link), but I don't believe they're not distorting the audio on purpose.
So you think they might have
So you think they might have given him a crummy low bandwidth feed? Well could be but I have seen CNN do live feeds all the time and never noticed that type of distortion, like one of the audio tech guys said below it is like the wobbly “Cher Effect”, and not just the ordinary type of low rez sound fluctuation.
Yup
I was watching the clips again, and here's an interesting part. Check out the last clip at 4:44, when the phone rings. Notice how it sounds really weird, with a fluctuating frequency? That's kind of what's happening to Ron Paul's voice, on a more dramatic scale because the algorithm can't properly track the high frequency ring (low bandwidth, especially voice compression algorithms neglect high frequencies because they're not crucial to preserve intelligibility).
Some voices compress worse than others. Younger people have cleaner voices, and young women tend to have the cleanest tones, leading to better compression. This is probably a factor here.
This thread should be
This thread should be deleted, read comments below by audio engineers.
It's the room
There is no distortion except for the room. Glass behind him and probably a wooden or brick floor. Just a weird echo going on. No conspiracy people. Move on.
This is absolutely
This is absolutely outrageous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CNN is the worst.
this is real....it happened
this is real....it happened when they showed the ballot bowl speech as well...ive been noticing this since it started and it is a dirty trick to make ron paul sound stupid and silly when he talks......
T.
If any of the guys who
If any of the guys who uploaded these three videos to youtube check this blog out, please have a look at your original recordings to verify whether or not this sound distortion was part of the original broadcast. That should clear it up.

I am an audio engineer
and this technology is call Autotune. Originally released in the late 1990's by a company called Antares. It the same effect made famous by Cher's song "Do you believe in life after love?" It's been used constantly since. It's probably used on 99% of all songs produced today. When in normal use it simply helps with pitch when recording singers. It saves time and is an handy tool in the studio. Most musicians and engineers use it as a transparent effect. So basically the idea is you should never notice it working because it can be adjusted to slightly alter the pitch of a singer's note if he/she goes slightly flat or sharp.. or even wildly flat or sharp. It can however be adjusted to give a comedic robot voice sound. Kind of like the one you are hearing with Dr. Paul's voice. Basically, as Dr. Paul's voice approaches a note in his speech such as say a "C" the autotune can make his pitch stick dead to that C note even though his true vocal inflection is mostly wavering all around the "C". You can even change autotune to fit in certain key signatures. So for example in the key of E there is no "C" only a C# (sharp) so if someone sings or speaks a "C" into the autotune set to the key of E. His note will jump either down to the "B" or up to the C#, which sounds especially weird in normal speech. So basically this is exactly what this sounds like to me in the videos. Listen especially to the cheers as Autotune tries to find the root pitch of the applause and whistles. Such technology could perhaps be implemented as a form of compression to keep the size of clip small for the internet but I am not certain. I have never heard any compression which has this feature or what benefits it might have on compression. I cannot say that it doesn't exist. A third party which doesn't like Dr. Paul could have done this easily in editing with about 12 seconds and a few mouse clicks before compiling the video for the internet. CNN could have also done it but it seems unlikely to be so blatantly unprofessional. Thousands of folks nation wide would recognize the Antares Effect.
Fellow Audio Engineer..
I listened to the clips and I hear what your talking about. It does sound like an Auto Tune was used on the audio portion. That being said, I have seen two of these clips uploaded on Youtube and the audio was clean. I really see no reason why in any post production they would use any of the Auto Tunes out there for commentary. I believe it's more of the compression used to get these videos on Youtube. They really crush (compress) both the audio and video to get all these videos on Youtube. It saves tons of space on their servers. I also put nothing past these scumbags when it comes to the good Dr.
Peace
Thank you!
Thank you!
I`ve seen CNN do this to
I`ve seen CNN do this to Bush also, it must be a common tactic by the leftist media. Doing it to Bush was funny, he doesnt need that kind of crap to be made to sound funny, it comes naturally to him. It probably IS done on purpose, sort of like a subliminal thing....on their part i mean.
Ron Paul 2012
Maybe it's just an
Maybe it's just an unfortunate coincidence that this has happened at least three times now, but I wouldn't put it past the elements within the media (who aren't the majority of good and honest journalists/editors) who wish to see RP sidelined.
PLEASE STOP THE ENDLESS CONSPIRACY REPORTING!!
It accomplishes nothing! I believe that there ARE powerful people who are trying to suppress the freedom message, but the endless barrage of conspiracies by his supporters, real or imagined, makes Dr. Paul come off as kook rather than the elder statesman he is... Just cool it!
haha!
Really, dude! Some Paul supporters have gone ever the edge! This site is ridiculous. One conspiracy theory after another.
gimme a break
it's up top you what you click on. he's just putting it out there.. looking for an explanation. i can't stand it when someone with a question reports something in order to get an educated answer from a fellow patriot and gets shot down by people who are eager to label everything as a conspiracy. my theory behind conspiracy theorists is that they are simply aware and have a healthy scepticism. others give it the negative connotation.
