Obama's $3 solicitations - the point?

I get constant solicitations to donate $3 to the Obama campaign. Why such a small sum? The cost of compliance and advertising alone must make this a very low margin affair.

It made me wonder if it is to just generate a public data point that he has lots of citizen donors and to draw attention away from his Goldman Sachs type of contributions.

At $3 a pop, he'd need every man, woman and child to chip in over three times apiece to make his $B war chest.

I think you are right when you said:

Romney, IIRC does this too. In fact, I think he pays out for small contributions some how because he is so desperate to pretend he is the choice of the people. There was a story about it.

Brilliant

Some companies pay for leads. This is a scheme to get you to pay them for the lead! LOL!

Brilliant. $3 isn't worth nothing but to get your data so they can mail you, call you and email you some more. You're already a warm lead. So warm that you paid them to become a lead!

(Not you, of course).

I met a guy this weekend said he gets an email every single day from either Barack Obama or his wife.

Oh easily every day

From Barack, from Michelle, from his body guard, from his campaign manager. He was asking for money only weeks after he had already won the 2008 election. He never stopped fundraising or campaigning.

I didn't think of it from the lead generation angle. Very smart.

Maybe he even chides them after giving "Friend, I saw that you only gave a measly $3 to my campaign. What kind of uncaring cheap skate are you? You can give more than that!"
