Even Congress Wants To Know What The NSA Is Doing With This 2 Billion Utah Spy Center

Maybe you've heard of it and maybe you haven't, but in Bluffdale, Utah alongside one of the largest polygamist sects in America, the NSA is building a one-million-square-foot data collection center — five times the size of the U.S. capital.
Despite immense secrecy, and construction workers with Top Secret clearances, news of the project made it to the pages of Wired last month. Intelligence authority James Bamford wrote that the center is part of President Bush's "total information awareness" program that was killed by Congress in 2003 in response to public outrage over its potential for invading Americans privacy.
One senior intelligence official formerly involved with the project told Bamford "this is more than just a data center," that it's a code breaking megalopolis the likes of which the world has never seen.
Several years ago the NSA made a major leap in breaking complex encryptions used in everything from "financial information, stock transactions, business deals, foreign military and diplomatic secrets, legal documents, confidential personal communications."
The official concluded by saying “Everybody’s a target; everybody with communication is a target.”
The story caused such a stir that the NSA's chief General Keith Alexander was called before Congress last week to testify about the project and categorically denied the facility will be used to spy on American citizens.
"The NSA does not have the ability to do that in the United States," Alexander told Georgia Rep. Hank Johnson. "We’re not authorized to do that, nor do we have the equipment in the United States to collect that kind of information.”
NSA public information officer Vanee' Vines backed up Alexander in an email saying: “What it will be is a state-of-the-art facility designed to support the Intelligence Community’s efforts to further strengthen and protect the nation."
While it's impossible to know the specifics of the work to be done in Bluffdale, it's pretty clear the NSA does have the power to snoop on Americans at will, despite what General Alexander said to Congress.

Why would CONgress be scratching their heads (and likely...
other un-named extremities). I mean, arent they the one's who approved the funding in the first place??? Or am I maybe just expecting too much from them?
Edit: Oh wait, I forgot. They have to pass stuff so they can find out what's in it. My bad.

Well why doesn't congress do it's job and defund it.
If Congress demanded it stop it would be gone tomorrow.
Call them let them know if they vote for it you will help vote them out of office.
I resent the first line
I resent the first line "alongside one of the largest polygamist sects in America". I grew up in Bluffdale, UT and there was only one family in the entire town that was a polygamist. How and what the hell does this have to do with the spy center. It implies that they chose it for that reason.
That aside, I'm horrified at the NSA's plans to build this center.
You're absolutely right! Its
You're absolutely right! Its like when they do a story about a murder and the muderer has a background in the marines, they always point out that he's a"former marine." They almost never say he's a former Air Force, Navy or Army guy.
I guess its basic propaganda-throw in some scary guilt by association reference to make the story more shocking.

This is just the introductory background readable by anybody.
Read carefully the passage "However, several IAO projects..." ; it is a good plausible clue of what's going on.
I have done my lookups for a while now and studied this stuff / their initiatives alike over the last two decades, not just since 9/11.
Out of mere curiosity first, because I do some maths and crypto as a hobby of an amateur, and that relates a lot to the computational stuff to set up, for these things.
It doesn't take a genius to figure they have been unearthing, found back in some dusty drawers insane projects they never had the money to fund but they do now, with Obama's hard rain of tax payer money and Wild Fed. Reserve created debt.
I am pretty sure they climax regularly now with all the kewl big brother plans they were only secretly dreaming of so far.

In the mid-1990s there was a web site one could send an email through and see a plot map of where the email went server by server until it reached its destination. Every email eventually went through the NSA computers on its route. It is not likely this has changed. So these guys have a copy of every email ever sent? How many computers would it take to store and access all this data? Maybe about what they are putting together?

So they are saying that a facility larger than the capital of the USA which is responsible for monitoring all types of communication. A facility that was secret up until know with the newest technology in code breaking and spying. A facility that will monitor threats from all over the world.
That man said that such a facility does not and cannot monitor the USA and its own citizens. Thats is a load of bullshit and anyone who really believes what that man is saying is truly a lost cause.
I recall reading a Raimondo article
that posited that long distance phone traffic passed through Israeli hands, somehow.
So the truth may be hiding deeper truth. NSA does not have, but maybe some private company (ATT) or government does.

This is just another media
This is just another media photo op for congress to pretend they actually care about our freedom. Let me break it down for you:
Congressman A: I don't like the looks of this, harumph, harumph!
Congressman B: Yes, it seems that it could possibly someday perhaps be abused, harumph, harumph, outrage!
Both congressmen: Did you get our pictures? Did you film up looking concerned? Ok, that's it then. (privately to NSA officials): Good luck, let us know if you need more money.
We've gotta protect our phony baloney jobs!

What is said in pulic session
and what is said behind closed doors before the intelligence committees are not necessarily the same. Just as an undercover cop doesn't have to tell you he is a cop the intel guys can get away with misleading public statements for 'national security reasons.'
While I do believe that some things are rightly kept secret, I have zero trust in the members of the house and senate intel committees to place protecting the constitution above any short term or intangible gains in national security. And that really is the problem.

I think what this exemplifies is that when left in the Feds hands, everyone is included, guilty till proven innocent. If left in local or states hands, much more just, because who knows better what's really going on if not ure closest neighbor?
This is the writing on the wall, as if we needed another hint.
