Waitress Gets $12,000 Tip. Cops Keep $11,000.
Submitted by RoadtoSurfdom on Tue, 04/10/2012 - 12:38Stacy Knutson, a struggling Minnesota waitress and mother of five, says she was searching for a "miracle" to help her family with financial problems.
But that "miracle" quickly came and went after police seized a $12,000 tip that was left at her table. Knutson filed a lawsuit in Clay County District Court stating that the money is rightfully hers. Police argue it is drug money.
Knutson was working at the Fryn' Pan in Moorhead, Minn., when, according to her attorney, Craig Richie, a woman left a to-go box from another restaurant on the table. Knutson followed the woman to her car to return the box to her.
"No I am good, you keep it," the woman said, according to the lawsuit.
Knutson did not know the woman and has not seen her since, Richie said. Knutson thought it was "strange" that the woman told her to keep it but she took it inside. The box felt too heavy to be leftovers, Ritchie said, so she opened it -- only to find bundles of cash wrapped in rubber bands.
"Even though I desperately needed the money as my husband and I have five children, I feel I did the right thing by calling the Moorhead Police," Knutson said in the lawsuit.
Police seized the money and originally told Knutson that if no one claimed it after 60 days, it was hers. She was later told 90 days, Richie said. When 90 days passed, Knutson was still without the $12,000.

Good Deeds
What do you do if you find your son's or daughter's drug profits under their bed?
It's a dilemma.
Pretty smart solution to give it to someone who needs it.
What do you think? http://consequeries.com/
Why not just leave it there?
Why steal from your son or daughter?
Drug profits? Like that's a bad thing? I see nothing wrong with an individual selling an inanimate object to another individual that is willing to buy it. Who cares what the buyer does with their purchase that's their prerogative.
She got all of the money already

The cops were sleazy about it, though. I agree with everyone here that she should never have reported it.
With liberty and justice for all...who can afford it.
No better example
of the fact that many if not most police departments are just another gang of armed thugs.
The drug war has done more to erode liberty and safety of the people than anything else. All in the name of 'public safety'.
The tyranny of democracy at work.
Hell man they probably rubbed pot on the frigging money
or just plain lied.

The Problem with Cops
Unfortunately, most policemen in this country are the lowest common denominator, many of whom have only a high school education or a GED. And these are the people with whom we entrust our most sacred liberties and freedoms? Forgiving me for not laughing and being frightened at the same time.
Law enforcement officers should not be that uneducated. They need comprehensive knowledge of what the law says, what it means and how it applies to various real world situations. Until then, expect more and more stories of police violence, brutality and outright criminality.
My 20/20 hindsight says (if you must) report $1000 to the police
If the money was not legitimately owned (and given) by the customer, and the police DO manage to find the rightful owner, make separate arrangements to return the remaining $11K to the rightful owner.

(Never call the police).
"I feel I did the right thing
"I feel I did the right thing by calling the Moorhead Police"
BZZZT! WRONG.
This is just so sad
She should be rewarded for her honesty and not being punished - victimized.
