Viking robots found life on Mars in 1976, scientists say

New analysis of 36-year-old data, resuscitated from printouts, shows that NASA found life on Mars, an international team of mathematicians and scientists conclude in a paper published this week.

Further, NASA doesn't need a human expedition to Mars to nail down the claim, neuropharmacologist and biologist Joseph Miller, with the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine, told Discovery News.

"The ultimate proof is to take a video of a Martian bacteria. They should send a microscope — watch the bacteria move," Miller said.

"On the basis of what we've done so far, I'd say I'm 99 percent sure there's life there," he added.

Funny...

The skepticism in this thread is awesome.

These "scientists" used an unproven technique, even though it could be a proven one if they actually did the work, in order to analyze potentially faulty or misleading data from 30+ years ago to make the claim that they are "almost" certain life exists on Mars, which could not be checked or verified at all...

As was said in another comment... Just when everyone has decided to write Nasa off as a wasteful expense.

Do they currently have the technology to make a space helmet that would fit Newt's head?

That was good for a chuckle.

Thanks. I don't laugh enough these days.

nasa funding gets cut and all of a sudden they found life.. rofl

to think i once admired scientists, to think these were the type of people i would have joined, had i become an academia.. puke

Actually, the strange thing is...

...that NASA's budget went *up*, even though Obama is taking an ax to anything useful the agency's actually been working on. Dr. Holdren and his anti-industrialization wrecking ball at work. They're diverting funds to prop up more climate change propagandists.

Must be a bit dyslexic today.

Must be a bit dyslexic today. At first glance I thought it read "Robots found Vikings on Mars in 1976."

Time to step away from the computer...

And this is my second good chuckle.

Actually, I laughed out loud at this one.

Great thread! Two good laughs within one minute of reading. Thank you!

That would be way too awesome

That would be way too awesome for reality unfortunately. According the the multiverse theory it is possible that martian vikings exist somewhere in the multidimensional construct though so at least you can rest easy knowing that somewhere out there are martian vikings.

I'm 99 percent sure there's life there," he added.

The last time I heard this "99% sure" claim was when a guy was 99% sure there was life on the exo-planet Gliese. Upon further investigation it turned out the planet Gliese didn't even exist - it was a mathematical ERROR.

If there was/is microbial life on Mars, it's most likely it came from the EARTH probes.
