50% of the people you meet are below average...

These words spoken by comedian Steven Wright have far more truth to them than you might think. Comedian Christopher Titus quotes an article that states that 63% of Americans are disfunctional. The point of all this? While Ron Paul and his followers have won over many intellectuals, there is a HUGE faction of America that blindly follows the status quo based on nothing more than feelings. These are the people that vote the party line, they react through fear and mistrust. If a candidate tells them he will take care of them and their children, and if that candidate fosters their trust through lies and creates distrust for other candidates, he will almost assuredly get their vote. This is the problem. Just look at the resistance to Ron Paul's foreign policy for example. The media plays on the fear that if we withdraw rather than expand our military that America will be attacked.

50% -- HALF -- of the people you meet are below average. So what is the solution? I can't tell you the specifics, but I can tell you this- Ron Paul's campaign has to win not only the minds of the people, but their HEARTS as well. Maybe it's time to reconsider the campaign's approach, not to take anything away (it has been hugely successful) but to ADD something more to reassure these folk who vote with their hearts. Win the HEARTS and MINDS of the people and you will win the election.

Three cheers for democracy!

"The larger the mob, the harder the test. In small areas, before small electorates, a first-rate man occasionally fights his way through, carrying even the mob with him by force of his personality. But when the field is nationwide, and the fight must be waged chiefly at second and third hand, and the force of personality cannot so readily make itself felt, then all the odds are on the man who is, intrinsically, the most devious and mediocre - the man who can most easily adeptly disperse the notion that his mind is a virtual vacuum. The Presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."
-H.L. Mencken

Here's another gem.

"Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule - and both commonly succeed, and are right."

"Alas! I believe in the virtue of birds. And it only takes a feather for me to die laughing."

OMG

So who among us are below average, or do the "good" 50% end up here?

Independents tend to be free thinkers...

To be clear on this issue, let me say that I think that all people (barring the mentally handicapped) have been given godlike capacity for thought. (Ye are gods, and children of the most high.) It's just that some choose not to exercise it. Whether by age, circumstance, laziness, not caring, or otherwise, for these folks it's just easier to adopt the status quo. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, Jesus said something similar in the parable of the sower.

I do think that independents are free thinkers and as such, probably do end up here. Contrast that with the Democratic Party that promises the "average" citizen free everything from cradle to grave. Who do you think they will end up with?

Note to the Democrats that have switched- You are now above the "average". Grats!

Intellectualism is...

... the fodder of human pride and the LORD God hates this more than most other sins, perhaps most of all.

So we should all be dumb to get to heaven?

Oh, Dear. We are all going to hell :(

"Knowledge puffeth up"

While intellectualism can indeed "puff up", it is wisdom -- or it's opposite, foolishness -- that moderates it. Intellectualism in and of itself is nothing. Wisdom, knowledge, and understanding are to be sought after- "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding."

there's little good in viewing majorities callously, or overpraising yourself.

right, & a good way to start is not calling them "below average"

which in some cases is as useful as saying someone isn't limericky enough.

The title is just a grabber

Let's not lose sight in these sidebar discussions that the real point here is that there is a serious communication gap that the campaign needs to bridge. I welcome any CONSTRUCTIVE ideas to bridge that gap.

Well...

IQ is lognormally distributed, so if the people you meet comprise unbiased samples, the average (mean) does not equal half (median).

Great talking point

Actually, that is a great talking point. As I stated in my post these folks react to feelings, in this case, FEAR. The debt CRISIS should be one of the talking points to reach these folks. The answer- Ron Paul is the one to SOLVE the debt crisis.

More of these feelings/talking points need to be explored and refined.

It's worse than that...

...but a DETERMINED MINORITY can overcome ANY MAJORITY.

The video below will show you THE AVERAGE PERSON.

This is obviously a BIASED video and some people find it offensive.

However, it is not about "Americans" in my view.

This can apply to the majority of people in ANY COUNTRY.

Look at the mess EUROPE is in. Who "elected" their current "Political Leaders?"

AVERAGE PEOPLE. ♥ LOVE THEM AND EDUCATE THEM.

Of course it is wrong, but it makes good comedy

The problem with the quote is that it implies uniform sample sets. Comedians are good with statistics jokes but seldom appear to understand the words coming out of their mouths. The people you meet tend to be at work, school, religious organizations, political organizations. If you work with folks that tend to be well educated and usually think for a living it is possible, but not certain, that this will pull up the average.

I went to a Rep District meeting recently and, while there was a scattering of Ron Paul folks in the crowd it was not enough to pull the entire room up to average.

Then again, average what? Intelligence, height, income, well dressed, or car they own? What average are we looking for here. I think the implication is intelligence but that varies a lot with the crowd you hang out with. Hang out with smart people and you everyone you meet may be above average. Hang out with total losers and get the opposite.

I believe George Carlin was the originator of this one:

The effect is subtractive, not additive...

Just a little humor, sorry. My original intent was not to alienate people but to illustrate a gap that needs to be bridged. We all know people that for whatever reason no longer want their ideas challenged, their minds are set. It's these folks we need to have a HEART to HEART with.
