High Taxes Cause More Americans to Renounce Citizenship

[CNBC] - A year ago, in Action Comics, Superman declared plans to renounce his U.S. citizenship.

"'Truth, justice, and the American way' — it's not enough anymore," the comic book superhero said, after both the Iranian and American governments criticized him for joining a peaceful anti-government protest in Tehran.

Last year, almost 1,800 people followed Superman's lead, renouncing their U.S. citizenship or handing in their Green Cards. That's a record number since the Internal Revenue Service began publishing a list of those who renounced in 1998. It's also almost eight times more than the number of citizens who renounced in 2008, and more than the total for 2007, 2008 and 2009 combined.

But not everyone's motivations are as lofty as Superman's. Many say they parted ways with America for tax reasons.

A lot of comments on this

A lot of comments on this thread refer to "leaving". You don't have to leave in order to expatriate (renounce citizenship), IF you were born here to begin with. You merely need notify the Attorney General per US Code Title 8 para 1481, and surrender ALL benefits of being a US Citizen. The "ALL benefits" part is the one most will have a problem with...

We Ain't Leaving!

Why should we leave? If we get our Constitutional Republic back...it's time to make the enemies of America: the neo-cons, socialists, the Federal Reserve flunkies, the Dickey Cheneys, et al.....MOVE FROM AMERICA.

Maybe they see it coming. The Bushes have property in Paraguay, Davey Rockefeller has a huge property in southern Chile and Dickey Cheney has a hide out in Dubai.

Root them out and and drive them out like the Loyalists in 1776! Traitors to the Republic...every last stinking one of them!!! We ain't leaving until we have a chance to drive the vermin out first!

If you guys come across articles about TAXES, IRS

Or the IRS will have the power to keep your passport.

You should nicely inform the public that the IRS is as Federal as the Federal reserve, or Fed Ex.

Freedom may be worth searching for.

I have given up on my fellow Americans, (not DPers) as I will not shed one more calorie trying to awaken anyone else who is not a critical thinker and does not have the inherent feeling that something is wrong.

My Uncle is an American from

My Uncle is an American from Idaho. He started coming up here to Canada about 15 years ago to do custom farm work with his company. He met my Aunt about 5 years later and they got married 5 years ago. His attitude back then was to bomb the shit out of anybody around the world to keep America safe. Over the years that attitude mellowed to the point where today he feels that if the U.S. doesn't quit the obsession with world domination, and spending itself into bankruptcy, it will be all over. Today he told me that if Obama or Rommey get's elected he'll be happy to stay right where he is permanently. I mentioned to him how the only real logical choice for President is Ron Paul and asked if he would ask his relatives there if they would drop some money to Ron Paul in the money bomb, and told him the current donation stands at over $1 million in a little over a day, the majority from small donors. He told me he would, and said "I might drop a bunch myself". The 'morality of the people', like Ron Paul says, IS changing. I would never have imagined that my Uncle would have uttered those words judging from his past narrative.

Now we need to do something about the corruption and socialization in this country before much longer, or we'll be in the same damn position.

The Persecution of America’s Expats

America’s Founders and Signers of the Declaration of Independence are rolling in their graves over the ignorant hypocrisy of the US Government.

America would not exist if great men like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Patrick Henry, Thomas Paine, John Hancock, Paul Revere, John and Sam Adams and others had bowed to the tyranny of the British Empire.

Today’s politicians in the city bearing Washington’s name are a disgrace in taxing Americans abroad who have no representation in US Congress and receive no benefits from the US Government. They are completely ignorant of their own country’s history.

Americans abroad do not use US highways, bridges, dams, schools, hospitals, fire, police, courts etc. They are not able to receive unemployment benefits or Medicare. They receive NOTHING from the US government other than a travel document, which they pay for.

The battle cry of the American Revolution was NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!

Like the British Stamp Act and other Intolerable Acts, FATCA and all the other legislation coming out of US Congress targeting Americans abroad will inevitably result in tidal wave of Renunciations of US Citizenship.

Americans abroad are awakening to the true nature of the US government. Like the colonialists in America, some will accept it, but many will not and make their own Declarations of Independence.

The increase in Renunciations of US Citizenship will be ignored at first, but before long, it will become a major source of embarrassment. Former US Citizens are already comparing themselves to East Germans jumping over the BERLIN WALL.

And to top it off, the US Government has recently tried to build the wall higher by subjecting those choosing to renounce their citizenship to an EXIT TAX, similar to the Estate Tax.

Like the slaves of the Roman Empire, Americans abroad now have to buy their own freedom.

America’s Founders roll in their graves!

Carl Leviathan and Charlie “tax cheat” Rangel take note.

I've Been Researching It

I'm no longer sold on the idea of America being the world's most free country. I'm considering moving to Australia. Just it is a bit difficult to get citizenship there. Either you have to put up a ton of dough or you have to be in a desired career. Understandable. I'm looking at going back to school for a career that they want people to move there. I'm thinking mining trades since that seems to be the big thing there.

Why obtain Australian citizenship?

As a rule of thumb, you never want citizenship of the country you actually wish to live in. Why would you want citizenship anyway, when permanent residency is all you're really interested in? So you can vote in a rigged election? HAHAHAHA. Jeff Berwick has an excellent service for this kind of thing on his website dollarvigilante, he recommends excellent tax-free backwaters like Paraguay or the Dominican Republic. And the best part is that you never have to actually live in these countries to obtain citizenship.

Moving out of the insane

Moving out of the insane asylum. Not a bad idea.

"But not everyone's

"But not everyone's motivations are as lofty as Superman's. Many say they parted ways with America for tax reasons."

I disagree that parting ways with the US Government for tax reasons is not a lofty action. At least, it certainly can be.

If one believes in the principle that the fruit of your labor and return on investments belong to you, then you should be the one to keep them, not the IRS. If you also believe that the government is instituted to serve the people, not own them or their property, then taxes should only be sufficient to compensate the government for services provided by the government and consumed by the people. Anything more is immoral taxation - as it is a windfall for the government and a loss to the taxpayer.

It's not hard to support the argument that the US government taxes well beyond the legitimate (Constitutional) services it provides, or that it spends much of its revenue on illegitimate (unConstitutional) activity. To renounce one's citizenship in an attempt to curtail illegitimate government activity is therefore, in my view, as lofty a principle as any. It is a repudiation of unlawful government activity, and a renunciation of support for an institution that acts in such a manner.

The ONLY way to justify taxation

Is for it to be voluntary, at which point it becomes a donation rather than a tax. Don't like the way "government" works? Don't pay them!

I do agree that it is HIGHLY moral not to pay for something that is putting a noose around your own neck whilst bombing the rest of the world to smithereens.

Yes - I think this is a great

Yes - I think this is a great point. I've thought of a ad type system (think local lottery cards, like the couple dozen or so instant-win cards found in a typical 7-11), where local, state and federal governments can print ads for proposed services and people can donate however much they want for respective services. Local government can have ads for fire, police, court, schools, roads, etc., state government for highways, parks, courts, national guard, state police, etc., national government for military, federal courts, state department, and so on.

Imagine how efficient this would destroy corruption in government - when people can instantly defund whatever service that they feel is abusive or not operating according to their wishes. Not THAT would be a government devoted to serving the people!

We are headed for civil war if we don't wake up..

Count on it!

Leaving the Country to Find Freedom

Very sad.

What do you think? http://consequeries.com/

is unethically premised upon anti-voluntary coercion and should be abolished.

I would prefer a volitional apparatus of governance instead where public agency is funded/defunded (ex. unjust wars etc) by choice and representatives can be elected for virtuous ideas in principle

More Propaganda

"The decision by the IRS to publish the names is referred to by lawyers as "name and shame." That's because those who renounce are seen as willing to give up their citizenship primarily for financial reasons."

Just exactly why should that be a cause for shame? This is IRS BS propaganda, IMHO.

No lawyer that I would ever associate myself would hold that attitude for very long. Renunciation is as valid an option of tax avoidance (vs. evasion) as any; in fact it may be more practical, in the long run.

When someone is taxed by virtue of merely holding citizenship, rather than by realizing any genuine, tangible and measurable benefit from such taxation - you know they're effectively a tax slave. Oh, 'n yeah, holding a blue passport don't cut it.

Your entire citizenship misses the point, you aren't Trustee....

In Court, or anywhere else the word "Trustee" is posted.
The "Trustees" aren't the people, since the very beginning of that document which means you can't renounce what doesn't exist.

You aren't the Trustees. Learn this fact as soon as you can. It might save you from a much worse reality!

Except that you can't just

Except that you can't just "renounce" US citizenship anymore. You have to secure citizenship of another country first and you have go before an official at a US embassy overseas and they have to approve of it. They also charge you for it.

Thus our government denies to Americans the very right upon which this country was founded-the right to declare political independance from a nation. The US government has become more like the government of the old Soviet Union.

IRS may be able to suspend your passport

Sen. Harry Reid has a bill submitted for vote now, that will allow the IRS to suspend your passport if you owe them taxes.

If the Border Patrol can't stop poor foreigners from coming in,

how will they keep Americans with means from leaving?

Perhaps Ron Paul was right about that fence.

it's just the beginning of the American diaspora.

We aint leaving until we drive them out first!
