Why Are We Drugging Our Soldiers?

By Richard A. Friedman | New York Times
April 21, 2012

SINCE the start of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, there has been a large and steady rise in the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder among our troops. One recent study of 289,000 Americans who served in those countries found that the rates of the disorder jumped to 22 percent in 2008 from just 0.2 percent in 2002.

Given the duration of these wars and the length and frequency of deployments, when compared with other wars, perhaps such high rates of PTSD are not so surprising. Prolonged exposure to a perilous and uncertain combat environment might make trauma common.

But there is another factor that might be playing a role in the increasing rates of the disorder, one that has escaped attention: the military’s use of stimulant medications, like Ritalin and Adderall, in our troops.

There has been a significant increase in the use of stimulant medication. Documents that I obtained in late 2010 through the Freedom of Information Act, and have recently analyzed, show that annual spending on stimulants jumped to $39 million in 2010 from $7.5 million in 2001 — more than a fivefold increase. Additional data provided by Tricare Management Activity, the arm of the Department of Defense that manages health care services for the military, reveals that the number of Ritalin and Adderall prescriptions written for active-duty service members increased by nearly 1,000 percent in five years, to 32,000 from 3,000.

Drugs do the samething

to people as they do with soldiers turn them into mindless dangerous criminals.

This there a way to find out who is making these drugs??

Who is the actual manufacturer?

Just like Hitler

"Its easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled."
Mark Twain

Both sides used it

Those old war movies you see where everybody complains about how lousy the coffee is?.... Well, that wasn't the only stimulant the Allies used.
Funny thing about meth....It's been legal with prescription (Desoxyn) in this country since 1944. It was initially used for a bunch of things like sleep and eating/obesity disorders, and now it's primary use is for extreme ADHD where Ritalin or Adderol aren't effective. That's right, they feed it to kids. If there's a speed epidemic in this country, which there is, look no further than Big Pharma and government for it's legal and hypocritical source.

The Abuse Of Young Men

As a cab driver in San Diego in the Early '80's, half the people I drove were in the military. It had the 2nd largest amount of Navy bases in the US there.

I saw a huge difference between the younger enlisted men and the older ones. The younger ones were all about the game and killing, like it was some football game and the older ones were smarter and acted like they were in prison, counting down the days from about the 3rd year of a 4 year sentence.

The longer they were in, the more they didn't like it. Boot camp was used to breakdown their personality. I remember taking guys from the Marine boot camp to the airport. They all seems so paranoid and broken down, like someone was gunning for them.

People do not develop their emotional part of their brain till they are between 23 to 25. Once developed, these men would most likely NEVER have enlisted, being they would have more healthy emotions which would have worked to keep them safe and alive. Younger men tend to think they can run through walls and work on reaction and adrenaline most of the time.

This is why the military always tries to get men right out of high school. Wait too long and there is less of a chance they would join. These same men, most of which have never been exposed to death, are put in a position of watching their best friends get ripped apart and dying right before their eyes. They are constantly in total fear of being killed.

If the mind stays in any negative state of mind, like fear or anger too long, the stress can eventually cause brain damage and has in so many. This is the worst situation to put anyone in.

The really bad part is that when solders went to Vietnam, they usually only went for one tour of duty and some went for 2 to 3, but most only went for 1. Now, they are being sent for 5 to 7 and by the 4th to 5th tour, they are destroyed.

This is so extremely abusive. The jerks in Congress think it's OK to send anyone but their own children. Many have never served at all. To me, this is extremely criminal, being ALL of these wars were started on false pretenses. Destroying people for the good of Israel is a crime beyond compare.

Obama thinks it's OK to send other people's children, but when his daughters get old enough to join, they will not be anywhere to be seen near a military base.

If Congress had to fight these wars themselves, along with their children, the wars would never have happened. There are too many criminals in Washington DC who need to be removed.

Every one of them needs to get a real job, but only after they serve jail time for killing people under false pretenses. They are also using illegal depleted uranium and the solders are being exposed to it. Now, some are having children who are deformed because of that.

Soon enough, there will be war crimes trials and look for many who never served but were so willing to send others to die for them to go to prison. They need to be thrown out NOW.

John Kerry has $30 million is stocks in the arms industry. A lot of Congress has stock like this, except Ron Paul and a few others. People using politics for financial gain by killing young men are criminals and need to be tried sooner than later.

When you hear about how a corporation is spending millions in lobbying, much of it is in the form of bribes. This is also illegal and people need to prosecuted because of this. They need to hung in public or put away for life.

I always thought it was....

to prepare them for when they have to attack their fellow Americans. If they are pumped full of drugs it will be easier to turn them against the American people. That's my theory.

I met a sniper in the bar about....

6 months ago and all he talked about was killing. He would try and describe it to me and I would tell him im not interested in details. I am sure he has cracked by now because it was obvious he was not right in his head. My ol man was in Viet Nam and he has NEVER talked about it. He was literally spit on when he came back. He dropped out of school at 16 yrs old and volunteered then to come back and be spit in. I cant even imagine what he saw that he wont talk about when I know another guy who talks about pucking up body parts of friends. All he ever says is we had no business being over there. He was never medicated but his brothers and sisters tell me it changed him . He had half of his stomach removed because of a bleeding ulcer while he was there. He said that ulcer was from how much he worried. He has been a great dad, i got everything i wanted growing up. I think maybe some of these soldiers now just have to find a way to deal with it without meds. Meds make things worse.

Your dad is far wiser than the expert who wrote

the article. While he questions the meds, your dad knows the true answer is that we have no business sending young soldiers into foreign wars.

My mom's brother was a tail/ball gunner

in WW2... If the subject even came up, he'd leave the room.

I'm proud to say I talked my nephew out of joining the marines.

Dear God,

PLEASE save our children (soldiers) from this offensive act of overt manipulation by the armed forces of the United States of America. Please JUST SAY NO!

I remember this discussion on DP from 2010..it was so horrific to learn about it. These two are a must read:

Talked about this. How we basically feed our fighter pilots uppers and are the only country who does this. There have been some accidental bombing on civilian populations attributed to pilots who were doped up and not thinking straight. Scary stuff.

The title of this article had better be a rhetorical question...

Why? Because Big Phama is greedy and wants more $$$, that's why.

Combat pilots

are issued speed. They have to sign a waiver that says three or four times in its text that they're taking it is totally voluntary. Trouble is, if a pilot doesn't take it and, is determined to show poor performance, he's grounded. Gettting grounded even once looks very bad on a combat pilots record/resume', so while it's 'voluntary', it's still kind of mandatory.

Pure Profit - HUGE MONEY

Soldiers represent a closed and controlled biological group upon which to experiment upon. They also represent a HUGE cash flow. The government pays for all the medications with our capital, printed off the presses of the Federal Reserve. The debtor nations becomes more indebted, big pharma gets richer, and the subservient "soldier-slave" class becomes more controllable and ultimately one step away from destruction by the controlling masters whenever they want to "push the button".

Same reason we drug our students

Profits for Big Pharma. A subtle form of mind control. To create addictions which increase crime and help fill up for profit prisons. Just those 3 reasons off the top of my head....

Provigil is another drug that should be on that list.

[stay sharp soldier, .... so you'll not have to sleep and you'll be wide awake to easily remember the violence witnessed from multiple tours of duty. What a nice use of this drug.]

Provigil is a drug that keeps you awake. It has legitimate medical uses and is used for performance enhancement by the military for pilots and soldiers in combat situations. Provigil enhances short-term memory and lets users stay awake for extended periods.

It seems that modafinil, like other stimulants, increases the release of monoamines, specifically the catecholamines norepinephrine and dopamine, from the synaptic terminals.
